, UNITED STA res BENJAMIN NQRV'ELL, or PASADENA, cALIroR Ia Application filed October 1, 1923, Serial No. 671,976. Renewed Harch 21, 192a l Taall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN E. Non- VELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lights, of") which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lighting device, the general object of the invention being to provide means for causing the rays of light directions, as desired.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a plurality of shutters 1 on each side of the device with individual means for operating the shutters of each set and with other means associated therewith for operat- .to pass in any desired direction or in all ing all the shutters simultaneously,
This invention also consists in certain other features of .constructlon and in the combination and arrangement of the several specifically pointed out in the appended claims. I
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the-accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like .or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which v Figure 1 is an elevation of the device with the shutters closed. v
Figure2 is a sectional'view'with the shutters of one set open and the other set closed. Figure ,3 is a similar view with all-the shutters open.-
Figurd 4 is a section on line of- Figure 2. 2 v A Figure5 is a plan view of the spider 15. In these views, 1 indicates a hase,-2 four corner bars of angle shape having their ends connected with the base and 3 indicates a top piece connected with the upper ends of the bars. The sides of the device are com posed of a plurality of shutters twhic have trunnions 5 on their ends, located a hort distance from the upper edge of each lutter, engaging the corner bars so that the shutters are pivotally supported by the said bars. These shutters will overlap when in closed condition so as to prevent the escape of thelight rays from the lamp o'which is carried by the' base and which may be of any desired-t pe, Each shutter is provided with a-curve arm 7 the outerend of which is pivoted to a bar 8, the pivot pin 9 passing through a slot 10 in the bar. Each bar is connected with the shutters forming one side [a pyramid 13 carried'by said top piece, the
upper end of the bar beingprovidedwith a knob 14 so thatitcan be adjusted vertically, and its lowerend carriesfa spider 15,
the ends of which being provided with projections 16'which engage slots-17 in the bars 8 sothat when the bar-12 is moved-upwardly all the bars 8 will be also raised to, close all the shutters and when the bar 12 moved downwardly all. the shutters "will be open. It will thus be seen that the shut-- ters of'one set can be opened or closed,
"or partly opened by mains of the bar 8 connected with such set or all the, shutters can be adjusted'simultaneously by means" of the bar 12 and 'its associated parts. Thus the rays of light can be directed in different directions or in all directions or'the rays of light? can be entirely out olf by closing all i the shutters.
The device can be used for difi'erent purposes ,such as lamps used in difi'erent situations, a lantern and other devices where it is necessary or' desirable to control the rays of light passing therefrom;
It s thought from the foregoing descrip-' tion that the advantages and novel features. of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended-claims. What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a-lamp therein, a set of shutters at eachv side of the casing, a curvedarm on each shutter, a rod to which the arms of each set of shutters are connected and means for reciprocating the rods.
2. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a lamp therein, a set of shutters at each side of the casing, a curved arm on each shutter, a rod to which the mamas arms of each set of shutters are connected, means for reciprocating the rods, a spider having parts engaging slots in the rods and 10 a vertically movable rod arranged in the top of the casing and connected with the spider. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
BENJAMIN E. NORVELL.
