The head plate 10 is positioned relative to the head by dowel pins 16 and'seonred to said head by a plnrality 0t screws 17 extending through bosses or barrels 18 of the head 3 into the head plate. Pivotally connected to the jaws 23. intermediate the ends thereof, by transverse pins 24 are the forked or bifurcated ends 325 of linlrs 26 said links having the inner ends thereoit pivotally mounted, by transverse pins 27, between apertnred ears or lugs :28 carried by a reciproeable sleeve-like member 29 slidahle on the tool body 1. ,This r ciprocable sleeve-like member is adapted to have power applied to its inner end to swing (ill r vii u the jaws 23 from the active position shown by full lines in Fig. 4 to a folded or inactive position as shown by dotted lines in the same figure. The forked or bifurcated ends 25 of the links 26 provide clearance for the outer ends of said jaws which are adapted to swing inwardly between the arms 2 of the tool body 1, and to provide clearance for portions of the aws 23 the plunger 8 has its walls recessed or cut away, as at 30.
Mounted in the outer ends of the jaws 23 are pins or stub shafts 31 on which are j ournaled smoothing rollers or rolls 32, arranged so that the axes of said smoothing rollers are parallel to the axis of the tool body when the smoothing jaws are in active positions. The smoothing rollers are also disposed so that the ends thereof will be in a plane with the head plate 10 and free to engage angular walls should occasion require. For instance at the juncture of a can bottom or can breast with a can body.
With the jaws 23 retracted and folded the tool body 1 can enter a can body through the neck thereof and this may be accomplished while the tool body is being rotated. After the tool body has been lowered to a desired position within the can body, the reciprocable member 29 can be actuated to unfold or distend the smoothing jaws, and then the reciprocable plunger 8 may be actuated to simultaneously shift the jaws 23 outwardly and cause the rollers 82 thereof to exert an internal pressure against the walls of the can or other structure. Shifting the jaws 23 outwardly causes the springs 13 to be placed under additional tension, and when the plunger 8 is retracted the expansive force of the springs 13 causes the jaws to be simultaneously retracted and retained against the facets 7 of the plunger 8. With the jaws 23 retracted the reciprocable member 29 can be actuated to fold the jaws inwardly into substantial parallelism with the tool body, at which time the tool body may be removed from the can in which it has been operating.
It is thought that the utility of my invention will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the construction is susceptible to such changes as are permissible by the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. An expansible internal smoothing tool comprising a tool body having a head, ra-
dially disposed members slidable in the head of said body, foldable and retractible smoothing aws pivotally supported by said slidable'members, means reciprocable on said tool body adapted for folding and unfolding said smoothing jaws, and means in said tool body adapted for distending said smoothing jaws.
2. An expansible internal smoothing tool as called for in claim 1, wherein said reciprocable folding and unfolding means includes a sleeve on said body and links pivotally connected to said sleeve and to said smoothing jaws.
3. An expansible internal smoothing tool comprising a tool body, foldable and retractible smoothing jaws at the outer end of said tool body, means reciprocable on said tool body adapted for folding and unfolding said smoothingjaws, and means in said tool body adapted for distending said smoothingjaws, said distending means in cluding a wedging plunger axially of said tool body and having a wedging action to simultaneously distend said jaws.

An expansible smoothing tool comprising a tool body having arms supporting a head, retractible members slidable in said head, smoothing jaws pivotally supported by said retractible members and adapted to swing between the arms of said tool body, and means on said tool body adapted for swinging said smoothing jaws to and from said arms.
5. An expansible smoothing tool as called for in claim 1, and means in the head of said tool body adapted for retracting said retractible members.
6. An expansible smoothing tool as called for in claim 1, and means axially of said tool body adapted for distending said retractible members.
7. An expansible internal smoothing tool comprising a tool body smoothing jaws having inner ends pivotally supported at the outer end of said tool body and adapted to be swung into substantial parallelism with said body, means on said tool body to facilitate swinging said smoothing jaws, and means in said tool body adapted for simultaneously distending said smoothing jaws when said jaws are laterally disposed relative to said tool body.
8. An expansible smoothing tool as called for in claim 4-, and rollers carried by the outer ends of said smoothing jaws.
