lie it known that I, Lriirnnn'r l Bnavnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county ct Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to musical toys, and coinprehends a toy which may be used 111 either as a rocker or a swing, and equipped with mechanism to produce a musical sound in either instance.
The nature and advantages of the invention will. be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connectioh with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, con'ibination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.

The toy flor'miug the subject matter of the present invention comprises a supporting structure indicated generally at A and the movable carrier 1). The latter is constructed from any suitable material, and of a size to accommodate one or two persons. The configuration ot the carrier B is such as to provide curved edges which permits the body portion to rock upon'the support A in a manner to be herinafter described. The body portion includes a seat 10 and also contains the musical mechanism which produces sound incident to either the rocking or swinging ot the carrier B in a 1nan nor to be hereinafter sctd orth.
The support A includes spaced parallel members 11 which are connected by the transverse members 12. Rising from each of the parallel members 11 are spaced standards 13 which are connected together by pieces 14:. The carrier l3, when the toy is used as a rocker, reposes upon the parallel members 11, but when used in the capacity of a swing. the carrier B is supported by hook-like elements 15 which are tulcrnn'ied upon the standards .18 attheir pointbfjuncture with the members 14:. In either instance, the carrier 13 is arranged between the standards rising from the opposed parallel members 11. In order to convert the toy from a rocker to a swing, it is. necessary to shift the body member l3 slightly to the left o1 the sup porting structure, in order to position the pins 19 in the hook-like elements.
Consequently, one of the plates l6 at the right oi the supporting striicture is statioilary, while the correspoi'uling; plate lo at the opposite side ot-the supporting structure pivoted on the adjacent member 11, so that it can be swung oiitwardly away from the supporting structure as it is released from the pivoted clan'iping element 21, the latter being utilized to hold the lat ter mentioned plate in an upright position. hilanilestly, as the movable plate 16 is swung to an out of the way position, the body member B can be shifted to the left, operating it from the other stationary plate 16, and then subsequently lifted upon the hook-like elements 15. Carried by the supporting structure A are rack bars 23 and 23 which actuates the music mechanism to be presently described, incident to either the rocking or swinging movement of the body member B. As shown in Figures 3 and 5, these rack bars are located at opposite sides of the siupporting structure A. One of these bars 23 has its teeth arranged vertically and used when the body member B is used as a rocker, while the teeth of the other rack bar are arranged horizontally and thus used to operate the musical mechanism when the body member B is used as a swing, as shown in Figure l.
The musical mechanism includes a plurality of cog wheels adjacent each side of the body B, the wheels of the respective series meshing with each other and indicated at 24 and 25. Meshing with the corresponding wheels 24 of the respective pairs of wheels are toothed wheels 26, while meshing with the corresponding cog wheels 25 are similar toothed wheels 27. The wheels 26 are carried by a shaft 27 about which and a shaft 28 are trained a plurality of endless belts 29, while the" toothed wheels 27 are carried by a shaft 30 about which and a shaft 31 are trained a plurality of endless belts 82. The cog wheels 24: and 25 rotate in opposite directions, while the teeth of the wheels 26 and 2? are pivoted thereon as at so that when the cog wheels 27 rotate in one direction, the shaft 27 is actuated to impart movement to the belts 32. In other words, the respective series of belts 29 and 32 are controlled by the rotation of the shafts 27 and 30 so that the music will be played incident to the forward and the return movements of the body B, irrespective of whether the toy is used as a rocker or a swing. Carried by the shaft 32' supported by the body member B are gears 34, each of which is adapted to mesh with one of the rack bars 23, the latter being disposed in the path of movement of the gears 34, but arranged to be alternately engaged by the gears ("A so that when the body B is moved in one direction only one gear and one rack bar is used to transmit motion to the other series of belts. A pinion 33' is also carried by the shaft 32 which meshes with the pinion 24. In this manner, a con tinuous musical sound is produced incident to the swinging or rocking of the body B. Arranged beneath the belts above referred to, is a bar 35 which supports a plurality of bells or other sounding devices indicated at 36, and for each bell there is provided a pair of hammers 38. These hammers are pivoted upon a shaft 39 arranged in parallelism with the bar 35 with the'hammers of each pair arranged at opposite sides of the particular hell with which they are em ployed. The hammers have their free ends disposed in the path of movement of blocks 4E9 which are carried by the belts 29 and 32 of the respective series above described, so that when one series of belts are actuated incident to the forward movement of the body B, they trip one of the hammers of each pair of hammers for each bell, and upon the return movement of the body B, the other series of belts are actuated so that the blocks carried thereby will trip the other hammer of each pair for the respective bells. Manifestly, the bells are sounded incident to the movement of the body I") in both directions, it being understood that subsequent to the tripping of the hammers the latter gravitate to contact and sound. the bells. if desired, springs 4-1 may be employed to return the hammers for contacting engagement with the bells after the hammers have been tripped by the blocks carried by the belts. The bells are varied in size, while the blocks carried by the respective series of belts are staggered to sound different combination of bells in the production of the desired music.

\Vhat I claim is:
A device of the character described comprising a base, a. carrier capable of being supported above the base for oscillatory movement or to be positioned on the base for oscillatory movement, a supporting structure, a transverse pin carried by the carrier, hook elements carried by the supporting structure and adapted to receive the pin to support the carrier above the base for oscillatory movement, and bearings carried by the base and pintles carried by the carrier and adapted to be received in the bearings when the carrier is resting upon the base.
