SKIP-HOIST AND TEAM-CAR OPERATING MEANS.

To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. HALE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Washington, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Skip-Hoist and Tram-Car Operating Means, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide for operating a skip bucket and a tram car to and from car-loading position through different distances from one cable driving mechanism. Another object of the invention is to provide for accomplishing the above result no matter whether the distance traveled by the bucket is greater or less than the distance traveled by the car.
To these and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention may be said to comprise skip hoist and tram car operating means comprising a counter-weighted driven bucket cable, an endless tram car cable, and tappet mechanism interposed between said cables and adapted to operate the bucket and car to and from car-loading position for different distances.
The invention further comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view, principally in elevation, illustrating an embodiment of the invention in a case where the travel of the skip bucket is greater than the travel of the tram car.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a modification, and
Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating equipment where the travel of the car exceeds the travel of the bucket.
In the drawings, more particularly Fig. 1, 1 is the cable which operates the bucket 2 of the skip hoist 3. This cable passes from the cable driving mechanism 1, or more accurately the drum thereof, over the guide pulleys 5, and also over the guide pulleys 6, and it is provided with a counterweight 7. 8 is an endless cable and it drives the tram car 9. This cable 8 passes over guide wheels 10 and is provided with a counterweight 12 disposed in the line of, travel of the counterweight 7 so as to be lifted thereby. In this figure of the drawings and in fact in the other figures, A indicates the distance traveled by the skip bucket, B indicates the distance traveled by the tram car, and C indicates the difference between A and B. Referring to Figure 1 and starting with the tram car 9, and skip bucket 2 in loading position, as shown in full lines, the skip bucket 2 is lowered by the cable driving mechanism 4. The counterweight 7 is raised and when it has traveled the distance C it picks up the counterweight 12 and carries it for the distance 13, thus pulling the loaded car 9 along the tramway toward the right for the distance B and into the dotted line position. As the cable driving mechanism 1 lifts the bucket 2, the counterweight 7 descends from the position indicated n dotted lines clearing or freeing the counterweight 12, which, descending from the dotted line position, pulls the car 9 into car-loading position. If it is desired to keep the car 9 out of action and to use the skip hoistfor dumping into some other receptacle use may be made of the detent 13 for holding the car 9 in dotted line position which will hold the counterweight 12 in dotted line position and permit the skip hoist to operate in the manner described.
The construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in Fig. 2 are the same as in Figure 1, and corresponding parts are designated by the same numerals with the exponent a. The exception is that the tram car cable isnot provided with acounterweight but is operated by a removable extension 14, provided on the counterweight 7 and adapt ed to work between stops 15 on the cable 8 with a lost motion equal to C, and to move the cable up or down by engagement with the stops. This mechanism or provision like the lost motion between the counterweights 7 and 12 in Fig. 1 is included in the term tappet mechanism.-
In Fig. 3 the construction and arrangement are substantially as has been described in Figs. 1 and 2, so that corresponding parts are indicated by the same numbers with the addition of the exponent b except that multiple blocks 17 are interposed in the cable 8*, so that the distance of travel of the tram car is represented by %where N is the number of ropes in the multiple blocks.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and in matters of mere form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such matters or otherwise than as the prior art and the appended claims may require.
I claim:
1. Skip hoist tram car operating means comprising a driven bucket cable, an endless tram car cable, and tappet mechanism interposed between said cables andadaptedto operate the bucket and car to and from carloading position for different distances.
2. Skip hoist tram car operating means comprising a counterweighted driven bucket cable, an endless train car cable, tappet mechanism interposed between said cables and adapted to operate the bucket and car to and from car-loading position. for dif ferent distances and multiple blocks op eratively arranged in respect to the tram car cable.
3. Skip hoist and tram car operating means comprising a counterweighted driven bucket and cable, and a counterweighted endless tram car cable, the counterweights of said cables arranged for co-operation in upward direction. 7
d. Skip hoist and tram car operating means comprising a counterweighted.driven bucket and cable, a counterweighted endless tram car cable, the counterweights of said cables arranged for co-operation in upward direction, and a detent for holding the tram car cable with its counterweight in elevated position to permit of the independent operation of the bucket cable.
