IMPROVEMENT IN APPAR ATUS FOR HOISTING AND TIERING COTTON.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,643, dated July 28, 1874; application filed July 10, 1874.

To all. whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES B. WENDEL, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Hoisting and Tiering Cotton; and I do .hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 3 are side elevations; Fig. 2,

a cross-sectional elevation, and Fig. 4 a horizontal or plan view.

The invention relates to means whereby cotton-bales may be raised and transferred toany given position, so as to form a succession of tiers or piled bales in a building. These means will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.

A represents a horizontal or inclined beam, connected by rods to with the rafters or upper part of building, and provided with the superposed plate B, having the upturned flanges or track I) b. O is a metallic frame, having the forks c c, on the inner ends of which are pivoted the flanged wheels D D, that runupon the flanges or track I) b, and that have two or more incased pulleys, E E, at the lower end. F is a brake-lever, weighted at the end of arm f, having a pull-cord, G, in the other arm f ,and pivoted, at f to the frame 0. H is a cord attached to the sheaf I, and provided with pulley J. This cord passes up from the sheafhook over one of the pulleys E, then down and under pulley J, and finally over the other pulley E, from whence it is pendent.

Acotton-bale having been made fast to the bottom sheaf-hook, force is applied to the cord H, so as to raise it nearly or quite to the bottom of the sheaf of pulleys E. The brakelever F, which automatically clamps the frame 0 to the beam A at any point of the latters length, is now caused to loosen its hold by pulling the cord Gr, when, by moving the cord H along the frame 0, may be transferred along the beam A, until the bale is exactly over the tier on which it is to be placed.

This device is found practically to operate with great facility, is simple and inexpensive in construction, and not at all liable to get out of repair.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, with track-beam A B, of the frame 0, having wheels D D, pulley E E, and brake-lever F, the cords G H, and the pulleyed sheaf I, having hook above and be-' low, as and for the purpose specified.
