WINDOW LIFTER.

To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that lt, Seann N. Juni., a subject of the King of Denmark, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, Vhave invented a certain new and useful Window Lifter; and l do hereby declare that thefollowing isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, refy erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a window sash construction wherein one closure member is adapted to slide into and out of window closing position.
rl `he chief object of this invention is to provide a window construction with means for moving the same in an improved manner, locking the same in the adjusted position `by improved means which prevents rattling in any position, and vby maintaining the window when in closed position such that a leak proof jointis secured between the several movable parts.
The chief .feature of the invention consists in the provision of means for providing the aforesaid construction.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing means for balancing the weight of the movable member of the window construction and for providing means for adjusting the amount Vof said balancing.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from `the accompanying drawings and the followingl description and claims. i
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a window with parts removed to show other parts in detail, the window being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same parts showing the closure member and the window elevating mechanism in lowered or open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevational view of the manual means for elevating and lowering the closure member. Fig. l is a sectional view of the same taken on the line 1 -l1 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken `on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1 and in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 6 is an cnlarged sectional view of the adjustable connection associated with the balancing construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is an enlarged elevational View of a modified form of the manually operable elevating and lowering means, Fig. 8 is a sectional View taken on the line 8 8 of Fig. 'i' and in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 7, but of another modified form of the invention. F ig. 10 is a partial sectional View taken on the line 10u10 of Fig. 9 and in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 11 is an enlarged sectional view of the anti-rattling meansand is similar to F ig. 5, being a modification of the invention shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 12 is an elevational view of the modiiied form of the invention wherein the elevating` means is duplicated.
In the drawings 20 indicates the framework of a. window construction while V21 indicates a glass panel or window closure member. As shown clearly in Figs. 4 and 5, the frame 20 is provided with a guide groove herein shown in the form of a U- shaped loop 22 positioned at each side of the frame and in a. slot therein. The free ends of the U-shaped loop extend inwardly towards each other and are adapted to provide a passageway for the glass plate 21. Upon th-e bottom edge of the glass 21 there is suitably secured a .U-shaped supporting member or strip 28, see Fig. 5, and depending from the samein the middle thereof is an ear 24. A. lazy-tongs construction, including a pair of bars 25, having one end pivoted together and pivotally supported by said ear 24, the other ends of said bars 25 being connected by means of the elongated bars 26, which in turn are pivotally connected intermediate their ends at 27. rlhe other ends of the bars 26 are connected to one end of the bars 28 which bars are pivoted at 29 to a bracket 30 suitably secured to the Awindow frame 20. The bars 28 are extended at 31 and form a bell crank construction. Intermediate the ends of the bars 28 between their connections with the bars 26 and their pivotal supports, is secured one end of the bars 32, the other ends thereof being pivot-ally secured together at 83 and to a lever 34rwhich is pivoted at 35 to the frame 20 and the other end of which is connected to the angular end 36 of a suitable rod member 37. The rod member 37 extends upwardly in a groove 38, see Fig. 4, being guided therein by the guides 19 and carries a lug 39 which lug extends transversely of said rod and outwardly from the groove 38 through a face plate 40 having an elongated slot 41 therein. The face plate 40 is shown clearly in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, The lug 391s provided with a pin or bolt 42 by which a bifurcated lever 43, having the cam projections 45 thereon, is secured to the lug 39 to cooperate with the face plate 40 to clamp the lug to said face plate in the desired position. The cam lever 43 is provided with a suitable handle portion 44. by which the same may be readily moved to the locking or unlocking position. From the foregoing it will be readily understood, reference being had to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, that when the cam lever 43 is moved into the dotted position, as shown in Fig. 4, the lug 39 and rod 37 will be released and the lever 34 may Abe moved to any one of theA positions intermediate the full line positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and may besecured in such position by returning the clamping leverv 43 to the full line position shown in 4. This .movement of the handle 44' longitudinally of the slot 41 will elevate and lower the window 21 through the lazy-tongs constructionshown. Herein the cushioned framework 18 provides a guide for the lazy-tongs construction and the window 21, and prevents rattling thereof when in open or lowered position.
The means for rendering the operation of the lazy-tongs construction very easy includes a spring 46 secured at one end to the depending end 31 of the bell crank bar 28. rThe other end of the spring 46 is secured to a block 47 having a flat surface 48 and a threaded opening 49 therein. The frame 2O carriesa plate 50 suitably secured therein and said plate is apertured at 51 to receive the screw head 52 of a threaded bolt 53 which entends through an opening 54 in the frame 20. Since the member 47 has a fiat face 48 ,adaptedy to cooperate with the frame, or other suitable or equivalent means, to preventrotation of said member, the rotational movement of the bolt or .screw 52, by means of its threaded engagement with the block member 47 will serve to move said member towards and away from the supporting bracket 36 and thereby permit the tension of the spring member to be adjusted. A plate 55 cooperates with a pin 155 carried by the bolt 52 and prevents sliding` movement of said bolt.
The means for preventing rattling of the glass 21 comprises, as shown in Fig. 5, a trough-shaped.portion 56 which is herein illustrated as integral with the U-shaped frame supporting strip 23, and said trough carries a resilient cushion member 57 which is adapted to engage the under surface of the window ledge 58 and ,also engage the window pane 21, thereby `providing a cushion for the window and an anti-rattling device forthe same, and packing between the window and the frame work or ledge 58 which will'prevent the passage of water andtheliike 'into the window receiving cavity of said window construction.- i
1n Figs. 7 and 8 is illustrated a modified form of the invention and particularly that part illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. 1n said figures 60 illustrates the frame provided with the protected groove 61 therein, which groove slidably receives the elevating rod 63 to which is suitably secured, by the pin means 64 or the like` a bracket 65. The member 65 pivotally supports a pair of locking fingers 66 which extend outwardly from the rod and are adapted toengage the slotted plate 67 which closes theA groove 61 to clamp the rod in adjusted position. A pair of coil springs 68 are associated with the pivotal supports of the fingers 66 and normally tend to project said fingers into locking engagement with the interior face of the plate 67. .also pivotally'-supported by the member' 65 are releasing levers 69,`each of which has a projection 70 adapted yto-'bear against the finger 66 to release the fingers from engagement with the plate 6T in opposition to the springs 68. A spring member 71 normally tends to prevent the-rattling of the releasing Alevers 69-70. Finger pressure upon the projection portions 69 will tend to tilt the fingers 66 into unlocking position and subsequent movement of said members longitudinally of the plate 67 `will elevate or lower the window as hereinbefore described, the rod 64 'being connected to suitable lazy-tongs construction.
Another modified form of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 9 and '10.. In this modication of the invention the frame 80 is `provided with a plate 81, having a corrugated or serrated edge 82. The frame 80 is provided with the usual groove 83 which is adapted to receive the slidable bar 84. The slidable bar carries the bracket member 85 which extends transversely of saidv bar-*and through the slot 86 in the plate 81. The member 85 is provided with a 'threadedy portion 87 and said threaded portion is adapted to receive a knurled nut 88 which engages a friction washer 89, which friction washeris associated with the corrugated edge 82 and is thus adapted to frictionally lockthe rod 84 in adjusted position.
1n Fig. 11 is illustrated amodiied form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5 and in this instance the anti-rattling feature is associated with the frame 90 and the glass 91,
said frame including the ledge 92. A spring clip 95 is suitably secured, as at 96, tothe axle frame 93 and engages a cushioned shoe or transverse strip 94. Pivotally supported on the frame at 97 is a finger piece 98 carrying the eccentric @am 99 which is adapted to engage the. spring clip 95 to move the-strip 94 laterally and into and out of engagement with the plate 91 to prevent rattling thereof.
1n Fig. 12is illustrated a modied form vofthe invention and in this figure the usual lazy-tongs construction is indicated by ythe numeral 100 and instead of the lazy-tongs construction being identical with that illustrated in Fig. 1, the bars 101, which correspond to the bell crank bars 28 in Figs. 1 and 2, are extended as at 102. rlhe free ends thereof are associated with the angular ends 103 of the sliding bars or rods 104. Thus, either or both of said rods 104 may be shifted longitudinally of the groove or grooves in the frame of the window construction in order to collapse or extend the lazy-tongs and, therefore, lower or raise the window.
The invention claimed is:
l. In a window construction the combination with a supporting frame including a channeled pillar, a window closure slidably supported by said frame, a lazy-tongs construction for elevating and lowering the window closure, of a pivotally supported lever connected to said lazy-tongs construction for actuating the same, a rod slidably supported within said pillar channel and connected to the lever :for moving the same, and exposedly positioned manually operable means slidably supported on said frame pillar and connected to said rod therein Whereby sliding movement of said manually operable means will actuate said lever.
2. In a window construction the combination with a supporting frame including a channeled pillar, a window closure slidably supported by said frame, a lazy-tongs construction for elevating and lowering the window closure7 of a pivotally supported lever connected to said lazytongs construction for actuating the same, a rod slidably supported within said pillar channel and connected to the lever :tor moving the same7 and eXposedly positioned manually operable means slidably supported on said frame pillar for movement parallel to the window closure and connected to said rod within said pillar wherein sliding movement of said manually operable means will actuate said lever7 the connections of said lever with said rod and said lazy-tongs being suchthat the movement of said manually operable slidable means is less than the sliding movement of said window closure.
