UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MELAGH J'. NUSIM, 0F EASTON, EENNSYLVANIA. ASSIGNOR T0 INGERSOLL-RAND COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
RADIAL IMPELLEB.
Application filed February To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Marleen J. Noemi, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident ticularly to the impelling blades forming a part of said impellers.
The object of the invention is to attach blades to an impeller hub securely and to shape the blades in such a manner that they are reinforced by those portions which are used for the purpose of attachment.
The invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the drawing showing an embodiment which the invention may assume in practice.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the impeller of a blower in which are mounted several blades constructed and attached to the impeller hub in accordance with the practice of the invention, portions being broken away.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the runner and the stationary shrouds of the associated blower casing, the section being taken along the lines 2-2 of Figure 1. look ing in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a top view of the hub showing several impeller blades attached thereto; and
Figure 4 is a cross section of one of the impeller blades taken along the line H of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings the impeller includes a hub A having a central flange 13 ex tending radially from the body of the hub perpendicular to the axis of the hub. Upon the hub A are mounted a plurality of radially extending impeller blades each having a relatively flat portion C extending beyond the central flange B and terminating toward the hub in wings D, which curve forwardly f the flat portion G. The wings D provide a means to intrain the fluid which is to be comp e e nd t direct it inwardly to be acted 6, 1924. serial No. 690,891.
upon by the larger radially extending p0rtion C. I
Each blade extends laterally on both sides of the central flange B of the hub and is cut away as at E to permit the blade to be placed onto the hub over the flange B. The blade is preferably formed from sheet steel pressed to the desired form. On the face of each blade a groove F is pressed extending substantially from the tip of the blade to the inner edge of the blade. The rear wall of this groove is punched out for the length of the blade from the inner edge to the outer edge of the central flange B of the hub leavmg two attaching flanges G extending rearwardly of the blades by which the latter may be attached to the central flange B of the hub by rivets H extending through the attaching flanges G and the flange B. Beyond the flange B the pressed out metal forms a rib G reinforcing and stiffening the blade against bending.
In order to provide additional support for the blade against bending along a radial line the flanges J are provided on the rearward side of the blades adjacent the main body or base of the hub A. Recesses K inside the hub accommodate suitable bolts or rivets L. The rib G formed as'above described reinforces impeller blade against bending and makes the structure rigid.
The hub A with the impeller blades at tached thereto is adapted to be mounted on a shaft 0 for rotation between suitable stationary shrouds P between which the fluid forced by the impeller is discharged into the diffuser R in the casing of the blower.
I claim:
A runner for a centrifugal blower including a hub havin a base and a central flan e extending radially therefrom and a doubde flow impeller blade formed integrally and extending on opposite sides of thefiange of the hub and having a rib pressed out on its back face beyond the hub flange to reinforce the blade. said rib terminating in flanges for attachment to the hub.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
MELAOH J. NUSIM.
