B. F. HAI-EY RABBETING PLANE Gttozmq Patented May 55, 1925.
Y UNITED STATES PATENT oFFiC-E.
BENJ'MIN l?. IliALEY, OF WEST PALM BEACH, FLRIDA.
RABB'E'IING PLANE.
Application filed January 10, 1925. Serial No. 1,670.
To all w71 om t may cm1/@era Be it known that "l, BnNJiMrN FRANK- LIN Hanny, a citizen` of the United States, residing at W est Palm lleach, in the county of Palm Beach and State ot Florida, have invented certain new and use'tul Improvei ments in a Rabbet-ing Plane, of which the like.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a rabbeting plane wherein means are prvided for adjusting the cutting depth oi" the cutter, means `being further provided :tor `facilitating the i positioning of the cutterinember on either side of the bedplate of the plane.` p
A further object is to provide a rabbet- "ing plane oi" the above mentioned character,
which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapt ed for the purposes for which it is desig nated. v
@ther objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specilicationand in which like numerals vdesignate like parts throughout the same:
Figure l. is a top plan view of the rabbeting plane embodying my invention, and
liigure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
In thedrawin wherein for the purpose ol' illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the bed plate or stock of my improved `rabbeting plane, the same being provided with the cut outportion 2 therein whereby the plane is rendered light in weight. The usual handles or knobs 3 are secured at their respective ends of the bed plate. An upstanding block e is secured on the bed plate 1 adjacent lthe forward end thereof, the same being spaced equally from the side edges of the bed plate as clearly illustrated in Figure l. The block is provided with the verticaly extending substantially `Vshaped grooves 5 and 6 in the front and rear faces thereof respectively, the saine cooperating at the lower end of the block with the adjacent ends ot the cut out portions provided in the bed plate and which are also V-shaped. The purpose oi? this construction will hereinafter be more fully described.
Adapted to be secured on either side of the block 4lby mea-ns ol" the screws 'i' is the tool post designated generally by the numeral 8. llhe outer end oi' the tool post is adapted to extend beyond theside edge ot the bed plate 1 and is formed in its front and rear faces with the substantially V- shaped vertically extending slots 9 and l() respectively.
The shank `11 of the cutting tool 12 is substantially rectangular in cross section and is adapted to be disposed within the V- shaped slot 9 iforined in the liront 'face of: the outwardly extending portion of the tool vpost 8. A clamp `such as is shown at 13 eX- tends around the outer portion of the tool post and the adjacent portion of the shank 11 of the cutting tool and a set screw or the like illustrated at let is associated with the rear end ol' the clamp, the inner end of the set screw being adapted to `be received with` in the il-shaped notch or slot-10 whereby the clamp 13 may be brought into locked engagement with the shank ll of the tool and the tool post for holding the tool in its various vertically adjusted positions. It is oii course tobe understood that the shank v 11 of the tool is adapted for slidablemovement within the V-shaped slot 9 so that the cutting depth may be regulated and ad justed.
When in position,` the edge 120i the tool will be disposed :jidjacent the side edge ol thebed plate and the plane actuated .in the manner well known in the art for the pur pose of 'forming a longitudinal groove or channel in the woodwork. By removing ythe screws 7, the tool post 8 ina-y be detached lroin one side of the block Zl and secured on the opposite side so that a cutting tool may be supported on the opposite side edge ot' 'the bed plate, thus enabling the plane to be used from either the lett or the right hand side. Also, by entirely detaching the tool post 8, and placing the shank l1 of the 4tool in the V-shaped slot 5 formed in the front face of the block 4, the cuttingedge 12 will be disposed within the cut out portion 2 of the bed plate so that the tool will be disposed in the intermediate portion of the bed plate. The clamp i3 will be `placed around the block ll, the forward poltion thereof engaging` thefshanle portion 1l, while the set screw will engagel the \/.-sl'1a:ped slot G as is obvious troni the construction illustrated.
It will thus be seen l'ronl the foregoing description, that a rabbeting` plane has been provided wherein the parts are o1" such coustruetion as to enable the lsame Lto be readily' assembled and adjusted Without the loss ot' any considerable time orlabor andiy will further at ally tiinesV be positive and elli,- eient infcarrying out-the'` purposes for Which the saine has beeirdesignated.
While I have shown the:I preferred enibdi1nent of iny invention,` it is to be understood that variouschanges in the sir/ie',` shape and arrangement ot' parts may be re4 sorted to Without departing from the-'spirit ofI the invention and the scope otf theappendedv clainis;
lllaving;` thus deseribedthe invention, what I claini iszl. A rabbetingv plane comprising. inxcoinbination, a bed plate, a block,seeuredftherw on and spaeedtroni :the side edges thereo'li,.a tool post, means for detaeliaibly supl'iorting it on either side ot said block, the-outerfportion thereofbeing disposed beyond the side edge'o the bed plate7 andza. elaxnp'tor detachably and.v adjustably securing a; tool thereon.
2. A rabbeting plane Comprising in` coinbination a bed p1ate,.a:bloek secured:` thereon and spaced=tro1n=the side edges thereof5 a tool post, means For detachably support-ingit.y on either side ot saidb'loek, the outer portion thereotl being' disposed beyond the side edge o'lf the bed plate, the outward ly extending portion of the tool post beingl provided in its front tace with a vertically extending substantially V-shaped groove, forlreeeivingfthe shank portion ot a (cutting tool, and means for detaehably and adjustably securing the shank of the tool in said groove;
3. A rabbetingplane comprising in coin, bination, a bed plate, a block secured thereon and spaced from the side edges thereof, antool post, ineans for detachably supporting it on either side of said block, the -ourer portion thereof being,r` disposed beyond the side edge of the bedi plate,v.the.outwardly extending portion ot' thetool: post being; provided-in its front tace With ayertieally extending substantially V-shapedi groove, tor/receiving the shank portion ot a cutting` tool, means for detaehably and adjustably securing the shank of the tool in said groove, said ineans' comprising' a clamp adapted to extend around the outer portion ot the tool post and the shank ot the tool, and a set screw associated with therear end ol the elainp andadapted for engagement with the reary face of the outer portion oli` thetool post.
In testimony whereof I a'liixiny si gn aturc.
