The pencil herein shown comprises a body A having at its loiver end a tip B through which a lead C is projected for use. A suitable lead propelling mechanism may consist of a long tube 5 which is extended throuo'h a boreformed axially of the body, the tuzbe connecting at one end with the tip and having its other end 6 spun out to overliev a cap 7 which is tted to the upperend of the pencil body. Extending radially from the bore within the pencil body are a plurality of slots 9.0 each open at the upper end of the `body Where the cap is suitably apertured to preserve access thereinto.Y By this meansv mag azine chambers are provided, being conveniently formed by a breaching operation, Which, of necessity, leaves the lovver ends tapered inwardly as at 21. For the several slots thus produced, I provide a common bottom in the form of a plate 22 (see Fig. 4c) having-arms 23 extended radially, one to lie in each of the several slots 20. The plate is formed also with a central opening 24 of such contour as to fit non-rotatably around the luted Walls of the tube, as clearly shovvn in the drawing. If these flutings take the form shown in Fig. 3, a square hole in the pla-te will answer the requirements of this invention, as the plate will then have the effeet of locking the tube against vrotation Within the pencil body. Should the flutmgs impart to the tube a cross sectional contour of different character, then the hole in the plate should be modified accordingly.
lVith the parts constructed in this manner, the plate is slipped into place, so that each ofits arms 23 is disposed in one of the magazine slots. `The plate is then wedged into final position so as to rest upon shoulders Qwvhich tend to form as the body material` is dis-placed with this operation. When so positioned, the tube is introduced in place, being `entered through the hole in the plate so as to lock non-rotatably there- Within.
By this invention I have simplified and made sure the locking connection between the long tube and the pencil body. It is necessary that the tube maintain such a stationary relation, inasmuch as its fluted Walls are required to resist rotation of the plunger when the pencil head is turned for the purpose of advancing the lead. Not only does the plate assure a positive locking connection with the tube, but it provides at the same time a transverse bottoin for the several chambers forming the magazine. rThis double function is subserved most satisfactorily, inasmuch as the ilutings are extended preferably throughout the loiver half of the tube and the 'magazine throughout the upper haiil oi? the body', the plate being therebyT permitted to occupjY a convenient intern'iediate position, as shown. The several magazine chambers are by this construction given a sul'licient length for the accommodation of reserve leads D, such are shoivn in Fig. 2.

A pencil comprising in combination a body having an axial bore provided withy a )liurality ot' long-itu di nally`exten di n g grooves which open into said axial bore, said grooves providing reservev lead chambers, a tube Within the bore and containing lead propelling mechanism, said tube, when in place. serving to close olf the respective reserve lead chambers. and a plate nonrotatably connected With said tube and having projections shaped to enter the said grooves to provide a bottom wall therefor and to prevent rotation of said tube.
2. A pencil comprising a body in which is an axial bore provided with a plurality of radiating slots extending downwardly into the body, a tulie'arranged Within the bore and adapt-ed to close oi each slot from the others, a plate adapted to surround the tube and engage non-rotatably therewith, and having a projection which extends into each slot to provide a bottom therefor, and lead propelling mechanism Within the tube operable by rotary means exterioily ol the pencil, substantially as described.

A pencil comprising a body in which is an axial bore provided with a radial slot i extending doii'nwardly from the upper pencil end, the lower end ot the slot being tapered ton-ard the bore, a tube contaii'ring lead j'iropelling mechanism arranged with in the bore and having an angular outer surface adjacent the lower slot end, and means adapted to prevent rotation of the tube Within the body comprising a plate formed to surround the tube and engage non-rotatably therewith adjacent its angular portion and having a projection extendingr into the slot such as to provide a transverse bottom. therefor, the plate when 'forced against the tapering endof the slot being wedged immovably in place, substantially as described.
