The present invention relates to electric signals, and aims to provide. a simpleand convenient device to be attached to and carried by the arm for illuminating the hand during darkness, such as when giving signalsby the hand while driving an automobile, in order that the hand can be observed by the drivers of. other machines and by pedestrians; the device also being useful by ushers in theaters or bytheater patrons. for locating seats, by messengers or delivery men for convenience in reading.addresses of letters or packages in darkness, etc.

It is the object of the invention to provide a selfrcontain'ed electric lamp including a. battery, bulb and switch to-be conveniently carried by the arm, with means for attaching the lamp unit to the wrist, andmeans for directing the light rays toward the .hand for effectively illuminating the hand:

Another object is the provision of a lamp unit having combined therewith a reflector of novel form for directing the light rays to the hand, and provided with a colored panel orwindow for attracting attention to the device and for giving an effective signal in connection with the illun'iination of the hand. i p

' lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In; carrying out the invention, there is provided a self-contained portable electric lampincluding a, case 7 of. suitable size and shape to be conveniently appliedto the arm, preferably at the back of thewrist, and a. lamp bulb 8. is carried by the forward end of? the case 7. The rear end. 9 of the case comprises a door tobeopened for replacing the battery when worn out, and the case. '77 carries a switch 10.f0l opening and closing the circuit. Any suitable lamp unit can be used, and the inner side of the case 7 is preferably concaved, as at 11, so to comfortably fit the arm. 1

The edge portions of the case 7 have the loops or keepers 12 for receiving a strap 13 that extends across, the outer side of the case 7, and. said strap has a buckle 1-9: for fasteninglit around the arm at the wrist. A pad:15 of. leather or other suitable material extends across. the inner side of the case. to bear comfortably. against the arm, and said pad has slots 16 at its ends. through which. thestrap 13 extends, whereby the pad is. heldiin place by the strap. The pad 15 is of suflicient width or. area so asrto bear comfortably against. the arm, and the strap or band 13 enables the device to be attached to the arm at any comfortableor convenient position. i p

In order to concentrate the light rays on the hand, a reflector 17 is provided at the forward end of the case 7, it being noted that the bulb 8 is at the forward end of the (:2 se and is directed toward the hand. The reflector 17 is ofsuitable sheet metal on d overlaps the outer side of the case 7, and has the inwardly curved end portions 18 to extend around the edge portions of the case 7 at the forward end of said case, said portions 18 being spaced apart at the inner side of the case whereby the reflector opens inwardly and forwardly. The light rays from the bulb 8 are therefore directed inwardly and forwardly toward the hand, in order to illnminate the hand effectively.

The reflector or shield 17 may be secured to the case 7 in any suitable manner, but is preferably detachably connected to the shell or case 7, in order that the reflector can be removed when using the lamp as a searchlight or the like. Thus, as shown, the rear edge portion of the reflector 17 has an outstruck corrugation 1,1. to spring or snap over an outstruck rib 20 provided at the forward end of the case 7, said corrugation and rib extending across the outer side of the case and across the edges thereof, to the inner side of the case, whereby the reflector will maintain itself in place on the case.

The reflector or shield 1.7 is of C-shape in edge view, so as to overlap the outer side of: the case '7 with the curved end portions of the reflector engaging across the opposite edge portions of the case, as seen in Fig. 3, leaving the case 7 unobstructed at its inner side. I urthermore, the reflector can be sprung to remove it from and apply it to the case 7. The shape of the reflector also leaves it open at the inner side of the case 7, and longitudinally of said case so as to direct the light rays effectively to the back of the hand.

The reflector 17 has an opening or window 21 across which is secured a panel 22, whereby such panel is illuminated by the bulb S to be readily observed and for giving an effective signal. Thus, with the device attached to the arm at the back of the wrist, when the arm is held out from an automobile in giving a signal, with the hand in the position as shown in Fig. 1, the back of the hand will be illuminated so as to be readily observed from in rear of the automobile, and the panel 22 being directed rearwardly will show a colored spot to the rear, for attracting attention and to give an effective signal in connection with the illumination of the hand. The panel 22 is preferably colored red to give a danger signal.

\Vhen the device is applied to the back of the arm, the arm can be turned for giving the signal either forwardly or rearward,- ly, with the thumb at the top when signalling rearward and the thumb at. the bottom when signalling forward. The device can also be worn on the arm for many other purposes. Thus, it can be used in theaters by ushers and patrons for locating vacant seats. The device may also be used by messengers and delivery men for convenience in reading the addresses on letters and packages, and for reading house numbers. The device, when worn on the left arm can also be used, in darkness, for writing, and there are many other uses to which the device can be put although it is specially intended for drivers of automobiles in giving signals during the night time.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A device of the character described comprising a lamp unit including a case for holding a battery, a lamp bulb carried by the forward end of the case, and a switch carried by said case, means for attaching said case to the arm with. the forward end thereof projecting toward the back of the hand, and a reflector of C-shape in edge view overlapping the outer side of the case and having its curved end portions engaging across the edge portions of said case with out obstructing the inner side of the case, said reflector being open at the inner side of the case and at that edge opposite to the case for directing the light rays to the back of the hand.
