To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, @LEON M. HANNA- Folin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, inthe county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CarlDoor Mechanism; and I do'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it `appertains to make and use the same.
Theinvention relates to door locking and securing mechanism for railway dump cars i and has for its principal object to provide a Cal new and useful construction whereby a swingingly mounted door may be securely held in closed position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a swingingly mounted hopper car door with a. reinforcing member, an end portion of which overlies the hopper side sheet and extends into the path of movement of the 'j door securing hook.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a swingingly mounted hopper car door with a hook engaging member, said member having a portion which is interposed between the hook and the adjacent hopper side sheet, and another portion ada tedto be releasably connected to said hoo r.
To these andl other ends the invention comprises the various elements and combinations of elementsv hereinafter described, the novel features whereof will be pointed out in the claims. 1

Connected to the hopper side sheet 1 is a bracket 9 which may be provided with a plurality of perforated vhubs 10, 11 and 12, 1v
through which the securing means or rivets 13 may extend. A door securing hook 14; is preferably pivotally mounted on the hub 12 by means of the rivet or fastening means 13 and pivotally secured to the hubs 10 and 11,-
also preferably by the rivets 13, are eccentric cams or dogs 15 and 16, the purposeof which will hereinafter be described.
At a suitable point in the iiange 7 of the end portion lla of the spreader I provide a slot or recess 17 adapted to receive the bill 18 of the hook 1st so that the said hook when seated within said slot or recess'will support the door 2 in closed position. The
eccentric cams 15 and 16 are located on opposits sides of the hook 14 and the cam 15 is adapted to engage a portion of the shank of `the hook let to prevent the disengagement thereof when in locked position. The
cam 16 is adapted to engage the outer face of the flange 7 to thereby prevent the` bending of the portion #la of the spreader and to hold the door from longitudinal movement in one direction. rI`he engagement of the shank of the hook la with the opposite face of said flange and the engagement of the cam l5 with the hook la holds the door from movement in the opposite direction. It will be observed that when the hook is in locked position the shank of the hook overlies the flange 5 of the portion 451 of the spreader and hence prevents sliding movelllent of the door along the hinge pintles thereof.
By providing a recess 17 in the flange 7 to receive the hook la all danger of the disengagement of the hook and door by weaving of the car under-frame is avoided.
I claim:
l. The combination with a hopper, of a swinging door adapted to close the opening thereof, a member pivoted to the side sheet of said hopper, and means connected to said door and extending upwardly from the face thereof adapted to engage said pivoted member for maintaining said door in closed position.
2. The combination with a hopper, of a swinging door adapted to close the opening thereof, a hook pivoted to the side sheet of said hopper, and means rigidly connected to said door and extending upwardly therefrom into the path of movement of said hook and engageable therewith for maintaining said door in closed position.
3. The combination with a hopper, of a swinging door adapted to close the opening thereof, a bracket rigidly secured to the side sheet of said hopper, a. hook pivotally connected to said bracket and adapted to swing in a plane parallel thereto, and a spreader member connected to said door, said spreader member having a portion overlapping an edge of said door and extending upwardly therefrom and adapted to engage said hook for maintaining said door in closed position.

In a dump car, the combination with a swinging door having flanges adjacent the free edges thereof, of a spreader member connected to the outer face of said door, one of said door flanges being cut away to form an opening therein, said member having a. portion extending through said opening, and` means rigidly connected to said portion and extending upwardly therefrom to engage means carried by said car for re- ]easably maintaining said door in closed position.
5. In a dump car, the combination with a flanged door, of a reinforcing member therefor, said member comprising a flanged bar secured to the outer face of said door, one end of said member overlapping a free edge of said door and .extending upwardly therefrom, and means carried by said car for releasably engaging said flanged bar, said means being adapted to maintain said door in. closed position.

The combination with a hopper, of a hingeably connected door adapted to close the opening thereof, means movably mounted on the side sheet of said hopper, and means rigidly connected to said door intermediate a free` edge and said hinge and adapted to engage said movable means for releasably maintaining` said door in closed position, said rigidly connected means being adapted to overlie the side sheet of said hopper.
7. The combination with a hopper, of a swingingl door adapted to close the opening thereof, said door having downturned marginal flanges along the free edges thereof, one of said flanges having a portion thereof removed to form an opening therein, a flanged member extending through said opening and having a portion thereof arranged parallel to the adjacent wall of said hopper, and means mounted on said hopper wall for releasably engaging said flanged member for maintaining said door in closed position.

The combination with a hopper, of a swinging door adapted to close the opening' thereof, of a bracket rigidly mounted on the side sheet of said hopper, an angle bar connected to the outer face of said door, a poi'- tion of said angle bar projecting beyond a free edge of said door, said projecting port-ion extending substantially parallel to and overlying said hopper sheet, means mounted on said bracket for engaging the projecting portion of said angle bar, and means pivotally connected to said bracket for maintaining said first named means in engaging position.
9. The combination with a hopper, of a swinging' door adapted to close the opening thereof, said door having rigidly connected thereto an angle bar, a portion of said bar extending beyond a free edge of said door and adapted to overlie the adjacent side sheet of said hopper, a door locking member movably mounted on said hopper side sheet and adapted when in door locking position to overlie a flange of said angle bar, and movable means for engaging the other flange of said angle bar adjacent said door locking member.
, l0. rIhe combination with. a hopper, of a swinging door adapted to close the opening thereof, said door having rigidly connected thereto an angle bar, a portion of said bar extending beyond a free edge of said door and adapted to overlie the adjacent side sheet of said hopper, a door locking member movably mounted on said hopper side sheet and adapted when in door locking position to overlie a flange of said bar, movable means for engaging the other flange of said angle bar adjacent said door locking member, and means for maintaining said door locking member in locking position.

The combination with a hopper, of a swinging door adapted to close the opening thereof, an angle bar spreader having one flange thereof lying parallel with and con-y neeted to the outer face of said door, a portion of said angle bar extending outwardly beyond and overlapping a side sheet of said hopper, a flange of said overiiapping portion of said angle bar having an opening formed therein, a hook pivotally mounted on said hopper side sheet, the bill of said hook being adapted to enter said opening for releasa'bly maintaining said door 1n closed position, and movable means arranged on opposite sides of Said hook for normally7 preventing relative movement between said hook and angle bar.
