OSCAR A. SMITH, F EAST CLEVELAND, ORTO, ASSIGNOB TO THE NATIONAL ACME COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION 0F OHIO.'
' BINDING ros'r.
Application med lay a, 1am.4 serial no. 558,014.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OSCAR A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga 6 and State of Ohio, have linvented certam new and useful Improvementsl in Binding Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to binding posts, an
object thereof being to provide an improved device of this character, which will be inexpensive, quick and .easy to manufacture and elicient and serviceable in use.
A further object of this inventionI is to provide a binding post wherein a gripping or clamping slide is adapted to be reciprocated in a channel or slot in the body portion of the device by means of a cap the latter being threaded to the slide and body portion by means of right and left hand threads of the same pitch whereby, upon rotation of the .cap in either direction, the slide will be operated.
Other objects of this invention will appear 'in the following description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and
wherein' Fig. 1 is a side elevation illustratmy. improved binding post; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof illustrating'the parts in open position; Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating the parts in closed position; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the body member; Fig. 5 is a top end view thereof; and Fig. 6
is a perspective view of the slide member.
In' its preferred formherein shown and described, my improved binding post comprises in general an exteriorly threaded body portion having a slot, recess or' channel adapted to recelve a slide member. The lat- 'ter is provided with a threaded rojectionextending into a tapped hole in t e operating cap, which is thus threaded tothe body member and the slide, whereby upon rota- Ation thereof the slide will be rec1procated.-
Referring to thedrawings, it will be seen that the body member of the Apresent binding post is provided withlan enlarged base 9. and a shank 10 extending therefrom and slotted'to form a suitable. channel or guide-v Way 11 for the slide member. The binding post is adapted to be attached to any suitable support in the usual manner byv means of a tappedhole 12 located in the bottom thereof. The bifurcated or slottedI shank portion 10 is provided with a threaded portion 13, the threadsA cooperating with suitable interior threads 14 in a cap or sleeve 15. Within the slot or channel 11 is located a gripping member or slide 16 having a width substantially the same as thediameter of the non-threaded portion ofthe shank 10.' The end faces 17 -of the slide are preferably segmental or curved so as to conform to the curvature of the shank portion 10.` Extending from the slide 16 is an integral projecting member 18 of suitable length an thickness, the side faces 19 thereof being segmental or curved and provided with threads. A hole 20 is tapped into the top of the cap 15 of suitable size to receive the projecting portion 18, the thread portions of the parts cooperating with each other.
It will thus be seen that the cap 15 and body ortion 10 are connected together by threa ed portions 13 and 14, which are pref' erably right hand threads, and it-will also be seen that the cap 15 and slide member 16 are connected together by means of threaded portions, preferably left hand threads. As a result therefore, the/ca is connected to the -body member and the slide member b means of right and left hand threads of t e same pitch so that upo rotating the cap both the slide and cap wil travel longitudinally over the body member, the slide however, travelin-g twicethe distance of the ogg by virtue of the right and left hand thre By virtue of the present vinvention therefore, a quick operating and gripping binding post is provided. From the positions shown in Figs.' 1 and 2, where the cap and slide have been retracted to their extreme ,thus being shifted into the gripping position at twice the speed .formerly necessary where the 'slide' was secured tothe eap'and both were shifted the same distance together.
Thus, it will be seen that the slide member 16 is so connected to the operating member 15, Whiclris threaded to the body member and shiftable longitudinally thereof, that the slide` will be reciprocated in the slot 11 upon rotation of the operating member or cap 15. Furthermore, means is provided for shiftably connecting the slide member 16 with the operating cap, in the present instance comprising the cooperating threaded portions 19 and 20, so that upon shifting the operating cap longitudinally of the body member the slide Will not only be held for movement therewith, but will also be shifted relatively thereto.
Thus it will be observed that the slide is shifted in both directions by means of the coacting threads on the cap, or sleeve, and the slide, and it is a Well known fact that a thread action is a most powerful lifting medium and therefore is commonly used in lifting jacks whereby many tons may be easily lifted.
Although. I have described my invention in its preferred form, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the const-ruction herein shown and described except in so far as defined in the claims and embraced Within the scope thereof.
I claim as my invention:
