The mercury switch per se forms no part of the present invention, being an old and well known device. The front half of the cradle 10 is provided with an integral upwardly extending portion 20 which in the movement of the cradle about its pivots engages front and rear limit stops 20 which are in the form of set screws provided with lock nuts and serve to limit the forward and rearward movements of the switch supporting cradle. An arm 21 extends upwardly from the back half of the cradle 10 and has a rear cam face 2i. The cradle 10 has a rigid angle arm 22 extending rearwardly therefrom, the rear end of the arm 22 extending upwardly. Rigidly attached to the lower port-ion of the upwardly extending part of the arm 22 is an extension 23 in the form of a resilient steel strip. An adjusting screw 24- is carried upon the up per end of the arm 22 and engages a rear face of the strip 23. The adjusting screw has a lock nut to hold it in adjusted position and serves to adjust the upper end of the strip 23 forwardly or rearwardly. The extension arms 21 and 223 cooperate with cradle tilting or turning and retaining devices which will be hereinafter described. The switch turnon lever 25 is pivoted at its lower end to the side wall T of the switch box adjacent the bottom of the box by suitable means such as a shoulder screw 26. At the upper end of the lever 25 is a forwardly extending pawl arm 27 which is pivotally connected to the lever 25 by suitable means, such as a shoulder screw 27. The end of the arm 27 has an inclined face 28 which leads to a detent 29 on the underside of the arm. The arm 27 is normally supported in substantially horizontal position by means of a. lug 30 carried by the lever 25 and engaging the lower edge of the bar. A weighted pull lever 31 is pivotally connected to the lever 25 intermediate the ends thereof by suitable means such as a shoulder screw 31, and carries a lug 32 which engages the rear edge of the lever 25 to limit the downward swinging movement of the pull lever 31 ith respect to the lever 25. The pull lever 31 has a downturned rear end 33 which carries an adjusting screw 34: which has a rounded end bearing against theeam face 21 of the cradle extension 21. The latch bar 36 has an inclined face 88 at its forward end and an inclined face 39 at its rear end. The inclined face 39 at the rear end of the latch bar leads to a detent -10 on the underside o t' the bar and is adapted to be engaged by the upper end of the extension strip of the cradle, enabling the extension 23 to lift the latch bar and move into position in front of the detent 40. A lug ll carried by the wall 7 beneath the rearwardly extending portion of the latch bar 36 serves to limit the downward movement of the rear end of the latch bar and to normally hold the bar in substantially horizontal position.
Forward movement of the lever causes the pull lever 81 to move forwardly and upwardly and the rounded end of the screw 3t moving over the face of the cam surface 21" turns the cradle 10 upwardly. As the lever moves to the right, the extension 23 comes into engagement with the detent so on the latch bar 36 which looks the cradle to in its forward position, in which position the circuit is closed. When in this position the float bar extension 45 depressesthe forward end of the latch bar 36 and lifts the detent to out of engagement with the extension strip of the cradle 10 releasing the cadle and iei'mitt-ing it to move by gravity to switch opening position.
It is thus evident that forward movement of the-reservoir is essential to the turning on of the current but that the current may be turned otf either durin the return of the reservoir to its normal or rearmost position or-while standing in the normal position, since the latch bar 36- is moved to releasing position hy the power derived from the lifting of the float as the metal in the reservoirrises.
As shown in Figs. (3 and 7 a switch lock 48 is provided which consists of a bent rod 4'8, the freeends l9 and 50 of which are at the front and 'are bent respectivelydownwardly and upwardly to provide a pointed end. The lockmember 48 is mounted for slidingmovement ma keeper 51 on the switch box cover. 'The downwardly inclined end 49 engages the pawl arm 2'? and the up wardly inclined end 50 engages the latch bar 36. When the lock member 48 is pusher forwardly between the pawl arm 27 and latch bi 36, depressing the latch bar 36 and raising the pawl arm 27; Thelatchbar S6 is depressed sufliciently to release the switch and permit it to move to op n position (if it should be in closed position), andthe pawl arm 27 israised high enough so that no matter how low the metal level may be, the float arm extension a5 will not rise high enmigh to engage the detent 29 on the forward movement of the reservoir.
Important features of the present invention are the provision of positive power operated actuating means for the switch, the power operated switch actuating means be ing preferably a moving part of the machine, and the provision of means responsive to the level of. the melted material in the reservoir, such as a float, for controlling the ac tuation ofthe switch by the power operated means. In the form of the invention above described the movable part of the machine which 'actuatcs the switch is the movable res-- ervoir, however, the invention is not limited to machines in which the reservoir is movable nor is it limited to the actuation of the switch'by themovable reservoir. In 8 and 9 l have shown a modified form of the invention in which the switch is actuated from a moving-part independent of the reservoir.

The combination with a fixed support, a reservoir adapted to contain material in melted form and to be moved back and forth with respect to said support, means for supplying melted material to said reservoir, an electric circuit for controlling said melted material supplying means, a switch in said circuit, an arm pivoted on said reservoir, a float connected to one end of said arm, and a member mounted upon said support for operating said switch, said member being in position to be engaged by said arm in one position thereof and to be actuated upon movement of said reser voir.
