Description

Patented Apr, 28, I925,
N l "r a GUSTAV EGLOJFF AND HARRY P. BENNER, F INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS, ASSIGNORS T0 UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OI sou'rn nenora.
Application filed April 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GUSTAV EGLorF and HARRY P. BENNER, both citizens of the United States, residin in the town of Indet pendence, county of lontgo-mery, and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and,
useful Improvements in Plug Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements to in plug cocks-and refers more particularly to a construction particularly adapted in connection with petroleum distillation where the valve plug is subjected to high tempera ture and high oil pressure. A great deal of M trouble has been experienced where cracking processes are used in petroleum refining where high pressure is used to find any type of valve or cook which will work satisfactorily at high temperature and pressure. Some of the difiiculties are due to the unequal expansion and contraction stress between the bottom of the valve and disk or in the case of a plug between its body and the plug. 1
The object of the present invention is to provide an efiicient water cooled plug adapted for the use referred to which ,can be readily assembled or removed and which is economical and simple in construction and yet eifective in operation. 1
In the drawing, the single figure is a view partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation of our improved construction.
Referring to the drawing, a designates the valve plug adapted to be mounted in the seats a and a. The plug is held firmly in vplace by means of the coiled expansion springs Z) and the anti-friction members I), and I)", carried by the spring and plug re- 9 spectively. The arrangement is'such that PLUG COCK.
1921. Serial No. 457,795.
the plug can be turned independently of the spring. The spring is held in position by means of the screw-threaded cap 0 having a boss 0 to receive a wrench. The valve plug is provided with a stem e and a head d to receive a wrench whereby the plug may be turned. In order to make an oil tight fitting, we provide a packing f held in place by the packing gland g and screw bolts h. The valve is water cooled by means of the water cooling jacket y, water being admitted through the pipe lb and drawn 0E through the outlet Z. In order to be able to adjust the spring by adjusting the cap a, we provide a screw-threaded plug m having a wrench head m. Screw-threaded holes n are tapped in theface ofthe valve to receive stud ,bolts' to be used in connection with the flanges on the line to which the cock is to be applied.
he operationof the device is apparent from the foregoing description and need not, therefore, be described in detail.
.We claim as our invention:
In a plug cock, the combination with a casing having a water jacket therein. with water inlets and outlets in communication therewith, a valve cock mounted within the inner wall of said casing and having aturning portion extending through the outer wall thereof, said inner wall having an extension projecting therefrom in the water jacket, a cap adjustably mounted in said extension, a yieldable support for said valve seated on. said cap and engaging the valve, and 'a removable plug in the exterior wall of the casing to permit adjustment of said 1 p GUSTAV EGLOFF.
HARRY P; BENNER.
