ELIAS DAVIDSON, OF GRANTSBURG, WISCONSIN.
HARMONICA HOLDER.
Application led January 26, 1923.
To @ZZ iii/720my @'25 may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELIAS DAVIDSON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Grantsburg, in the county of Burnett and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harmonica Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for musical instruments and has for its object the provision of a novel holder designed to be engaged upon the body of a musician for the purpose of holding a harmonica in proper position to be played while leaving both hands of the operator free so that he may be at liberty to play a banjo, guitar or other instrument accompanying the harmonica.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is additionally provided with means for holding a music book. f
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple vand inexpensive in manufacture, easy to use, eiicient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side eleva-tion of the device in use,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the music holder removed,
Figure ll is a front elevation of the device with the music holder removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings I have shown my device as comprising a substantially upright frame 10 which may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably rod or wire of heavy gage, and this frame consists of an intermediate portion 11 having spaced parallel sides 12, a lower portion 13 which is curved as shown and substantially triangular in shape, and an upper portion consisting of divergent arms 1e terminating in forward extensions 15. The intermediate portion 11 of the frame is reinforced by a bar 16 which is grooved in its sides for engagement therein of the parallel wire members 12, these wire members being bound by suitable bands 17 or equivalent clamps.
Serial No. 615,080.
The means for actually supporting a harmonica A consists of a plate 18 secured to the extensions of the arms 14 and carrying a U-shaped wire clamp or clip 1!) which has the ends of its arms secured to the forward edge of the plate 1S and which has its arms coiled intermediate their ends as shown at 20. It is intended that the harmonica be placed between the plate 1S and clip or clamp 19 and it is of course desirable that the plate 18 be provided with felt packing strips 21 and that the clip be covered with fabric or the like indicated at 22 so as to avoid scratching or marring the finish on the instrument. It is intended that the device be used with the frame 10 extending downwardly and engaging against the chest of the player. To support the device properly in place, I provide a pair of curved arms 23 which are designed to be engaged over the shoulders and these arms are here shown as provided at one end with loops 24 and having their other ends passing revolubly and slidably through the bar 16, this revolubility permitting adjustment of the arms 23 to lit persons of different sizes and also permitting the arms to be swung into such a position that they will occupy less room when the device is stored or packed away.
While it is not absolutely essential it is desirable to provide means for holdingl the music to be played, and in carrying out this feature I provide an angular arm 25 which has its intermediate portion detachably engaged through a screw eye. QG on the for ward edge of the plate 1S, which has its lower end formed with an angular extension 27 detachably engaged within a hole 2S in the bar 1G, and which has its other end npturned at 29 and carrying a spring or clamp 30.
Screwed into the rear side of the bar 16 is an adjusting screw 31 having a preferably large Hat head 32 for a purpose to be described.
In the use of the device the frame 10 is disposed in front of the users body, the bar 1G engaging against the chest. The curved arms 23 are engaged over the shoulders, the harmonica A is gripped between the plate 1S and clamp 19, and the music book B is cngaged between the upturned arm 29 and clamp 30. If the harmonica is then too close to the musicians face, he turns the screw Sl to the left, and as this sere w bears against his llo chest it is apparent l[hat the result will be to move the upper end of the frame l0 and consequently the bar a greater distance away. If the harmonica is too far from the players mouth, the screw 31 is turned to the right Which will permit the frame 10 to move closer to the body, thus bringing the harmonica conveniently Within reach. In case the instrument is too high or too low the arms 23 are pulled out of or pushed farther into their accommodating passages in the bar 16, In this Way ample provision is .made for making any adjustments which may be necessary to enable the device to be used properly by persons of different sizes and proportions.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided avery simple and consequently inexpensive device i'or holding a harmonica and musicJr sheets or books While leaving the operators hands free for t-he playing of a banjo, guitar or other instru ment or for any other purpose.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and Yarrangement oi parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a Wire frame for disposition against a human body and having intermediate lparallel portions, a rectangular member arranged between the intermediate parallel portions and provided With longitudinal grooves in its longitudinal edges which re-V ceive the parallel portions of the frame, a plate carried by the upper end of the frame and provided with clamping means for holding a musical instrument, and a pair of vertically vadjustable and rotatable arms supported in the rectangular member, the arms being longitudinally bowed and adapted to resiliently engage the `shoulders ot the person.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ELIAS DAVIDSON.
