ANTHONY M. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINATION-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,501, dated July 28, 1874; application filed March 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY M. SMITH,of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Toy Safes, of which the followingis a specification:
This toy safe is intended for a money-box for children and 'others, and the improvement relates to the means for fastening the door of the safe.
Heretofore safe-locks have been made of a bolt and circular tumblers having notches, and set by a handle and dial, and the bolt has been withdrawn by turning a handle.
In my toy safe there are circular notched tumblers, combined with a bolt that has a thumb-piece projecting through a slot in the door, and there is a spring that applies friction to the tumblers to hold them in place, and said spring serves also to project the bolt. This toy-safe lock is reliable for the usual purposes of a money-box or toy bank, and is cheap and simple, but is Wholly unavailable as a bank or vault lock, whether of a large or small size, because the bolt itself is accessible.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the toy safe through the center of the tumblers. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the lock and door, and Fig. 3 represents the parts of the lock separately.
The bottom a and top I) of the safe receive within their flanged edges the side plates, the back plate 0, and the door-frame e, and the screw-bolt f connects these parts firmly together. Upon the door 9 is the bolt h, sliding through the guide k, and provided with a thumb-piece, I, that passes through the slot in the door g, and projects sufficiently to allow of the same being used in drawing the bolt back. The fence n at the inner end of the bolt h is contiguous to the circular tumblers r and s, and prevents said bolt being withdrawn except when the notches 0f the tumblers are in position for receiving such fence. The lever m and brake p apply friction to the tumblers, and the lever 0 serves to project the bolt, both 0 and m being operated upon by the spring 1". are upon a stem, t, having a knob, 00, and dial c outside the door. Upon the tumblers r and s are the usual interlocking studs 3, to cause one to move the other; but uponthe tumbler s is a notched hub, 4, and a pin, 5, through the arbor' or stem t, enters these notches. A spring, 6, serves to press the tumblers toward the pin 5. By this arrangement the tumblers can be set around a quarter of a revolution to change the permutation by simply pressing the tumblers away fromthe pin 5, thus insuring a sufficient safety to the contents of the safe, and also giving to children an alnusing and useful toy.
I claim as my invention- 1. The notched hub 4 on the tumbler s, and the pin 5 upon the shaft 13, in combination with the spring 6 and dial v, substantially as set forth.
2. The lever m and brake p for the circular tumblers r and s, and the lever o for the springbolt h, operated by one spring, 4", as set forth.
Signed by me this 11th day of March, A. D. 1874.
A. M. SMITH.
