To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SLAVIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans or Blowers, of which the following is a specification,
The present invention relates to fans or blowers and an object of the invention is to provide an improved fan for creating a suction or blast in vacuum cleaners, heating systems, ventilating systems or the like. Another object of the invention is to provide a novel connection between the fan and a suitable conduit. Still another object of the invention is to provide a fan supported'and driven from one side thereof and having connection at its other side with a conduit permitting the rotation of the fan relatively to the conduit, while providing an air tight joint between the conduit and the fan.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a vacuum cleaner equipped with the present invention, with parts of the casing broken away to show interior portions of the machine;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing in section the fan and the connection with the conduit leading to the dust collecting chamber; and
Fig. 3 is a section through the fan at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates standards on which a base frame 2 is supported. This base frame has a dome shaped sheet metal member 3 arranged thereon to form with the base blade 2 a oasing. Heads 1 and 5 close the ends of'this dome shaped member, while straps 6 pass around the dome shaped member and are anchored to the base or bottom member 2 to secure the dome shaped member to the base member. Partitions 7 and 8 are an ranged in the casing to provide three chambers 9, 10 and '11. The head 4 has an opening 12 with which the piping connects to conduct the dust into the dust collecting chamber 9. The partition 7 is provided with an opening 13 over which a screen 1a is fitted so that while air may escape from the chamher 9, dust is held in such chamber. The
partition 8 has an opening 15 through which air from the chamber 10 may escape and an opening 11 is provided in the chamber 11 for the escape of air, the two chambers 10 and 11 serving to collect any dirt which may escape by way of the screen 14;. Supported on the outside of the head 5 are brackets 16 on which a table 17 is arranged. To this table, a bearing sleeve 18 is bolted at 19. This bearing sleeve carries a shaft 20 extending into the chamber 11 through the head 5 and supporting the fan, the construction of which will be hereinafter set forth. On the outside of the head a pulley 21 is arranged 7 through bolts 28 connect with a flange 29 arranged on the outside of the disk 26 on the shaft 20 and also with a ring 30 arranged on the outside of the disk 25. The disk has an opening 31 coincident with the opening in the ring so that air may pass through the ring 30 onto the center of the fan through one of the hollow spacing rings 27. These spacing rings serve to clamp between them reduced portion 32 on the inner ends of the blades 33 which extend radially between the disks 25 and 26, being anchored at their inner ends by the bolts 28 and beyond their inner ends by bolts 34: passing through said blades and the disks 25 and 26. The inner ends of the blades are spaced apart to provide spaces 35 forming outlets from the center of the spacing means through which air may flow.
WVith the end in view of providing a conduit between the fan and the opening 15 in the partition 8, a ring shaped member 36 is secured to the wall of the partition 8 about the opening 15 and this ring shaped member has resiliently supported thereon a ring 37, the resilient support, in this instance, embodying rods 38 slidable in the ring 36 secured to the ring 37 by screw threads as I at 39. Coil springs 40 surround these rods and normally tend to hold the ring 37 into cooperation with the inlet ring 30 on the fan. The side of the ring 37 abutting the ring 30 is preferably tapered at 41 so as to reduce the amount of surface engaging the ring 30, thereby reducing the frictional contact between these parts. A flexible sleeve 42 formed of rubber or other material through which air cannot pass, covers the space be tween the rings 36 and 37, being secured by bands 43 passing about said flexible material and the rings 36 and 37, such rings being provided with grooves 44 in which the bands 43 may draw the flexible material to prevent the slipping of the latter on the rings. In order tostill further reduce the friction between the ring 37 and the fan the ring 37 may have a lubricating channel or passageway 45 leading through a reduced portion 41 and connecting with an oil cup 46 by means of a flexible tubing 47.
In the operation of the invention, the motor being started turns the fan which reduces the air pressure in the chambers 9 and 10, as well as throughout the piping of the apparatus causing dirt and other matter to be drawn into the chamber 9, and to be separated from the air by the screen 14. Should dust pass through the air it will collect in the chamber 10, the'air then passing it through the fan and discharging it through the periphery of the latter into the chamber 11. An air tight connection is maintained between the fan and the conduit extended from the partition 8 to the fan. It will be noted that the fan is supported at one side only and embodies an inexpensive construction comprising, in this instance, two concavo convex disks with the blades radially arranged between them and secured at their inner ends to spacing rings. Spaces are provided between the blades through which the air may pass. The conduit connecting the fan casing and the dust collecting chamber bears with resilient pressure against the fan about the intake opening of the latter so that an air tight joint is provided. This joint is also so formed that the friction is reduced to a minimum, this being assisted by a lubricating means which has a flexible connection with an oil cup arranged exteriorly of the apparatus.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a fan for creatingsuct-ion, of a part rotating therewith providing an inlet opening to the fan, a conduit, a movable part connected with the conduit, and means holding the movable part with yielding pressure against the fan part about the inlet opening.
2. The combination with a fan for creating suction, of a part rotating therewith providing an inlet opening to the fan, of a conduit, a movable ring connected with the conduit, and annularly reduced portion on the movable ring, a bearing surface on said annularly reduced portion cooperating with the fan part in which the inlet opening is formed, and means holding the movable ring with yielding pressure about the inlet opening.
3. The combination with a fan for creating suction, of a part rotating therewith providing an inlet opening to the fan, a conduit, a ring on the conduit held with yielding pressure against the fan part about the inlet opening and an annularly reduced portion on the ring, a bearing surface on the annularly reduced portion cooperating with the fan part in which the inlet opening is formed, said ring having a lubricating passageway leading to the bearing surface.
4. The combination with a fan for creating suction, of a part rotating therewith providing an inlet opening to the fan, a conduit, a ring connected with the conduit and held with yielding pressure against the fan part about the inlet opening, an annularly reduced portion on the ring, a bearing surface on the annular reduced portion cooperating with the fan part in which the inlet opening is formed, said ring having a lubricating passageway leading to the bearing surface, an oil cup supported on a fixed part, and a flexible conductor tube connecting with the oil cup and the passageway in the ring.
5. The combination with a rotary fan for creating suction, of a part connected with the fan provided with an inlet opening, a conduit, a ring connected with the conduit and movable relatively to the main part of the conduit and abutting the fan part about the inlet opening, spring means holding the movable ring against the fan part about the inlet opening, and flexible means connecting the movable ring with another part of the conduit to bridge the space between the ring and such conduit part.
6. The combination with a rotary fan for creating suction, of a part carried by the fan provided with an inlet opening, a conduit embodying two rings, one of which abuts the fan part about the inlet opening, rods supporting said last mentioned ring from the other ring and permitting said last mentioned ring to be moved toward and from said other ring, spring means hold-- ing the movable ring with yielding pressure against the fan part about the inlet opening, and means connecting said rings to cover the space between them and permitting the movable ring to move relatively to the other ring.
7. A fan comprising two concave disks with their concave faces arranged toward each other, one of said disks being provided with an inlet opening near its center, two rings arranged between the. disks, blades fitting between the disks, reduced portions on the blades fitting between the rings, and bolts passing through the disks, rings and reduced portions of the blades.
8. A fan comprising two concave disks having their concave faces facing toward each other, one of said disks being provided with an inlet opening near its center, blades arranged between the disks, hollow spacing means between the disks, and bolts passing through said hollow spacing means and the blades to secure the blades to said hollow spacing means.
9. A fan comprising two concave disks :with their concave faces arranged toward each other, one of said disks being provided with an intake opening near its center, spacing means between the disks, a shaft, a flange on the shaft, cooperating with the disk opposite that formed with the intake opening, a ring cooperating with the outside face of the disk that is formed with the intake opening, blades arranged between the disks, and bolts passing through the flange, blades, spacing means and ring.
