ADOLPH scannen, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMPSIIAD-JOINT CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed February 1, 1923. Serialv No.7616,427.
To aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, AnoLrrI SCILIERER, a subject of the King of Rumania, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia `and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsv in Lamp-Shade-Joint Construction, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to lamp shade joint construction and its Objectis to provide a cheap and eflicient joint construction which may be applied to a lamp shade of any shape or design and which will present a pleasing appearance.
This object, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 is a central section through a lamp having my invention applied thereto,
Figure 2 a fragmentary inverted perspective view of a joint constructed in accordance with my invention, F
Figure 3 a fragmentary section on line 3-3 of Figure l,
Figure 4 a fragmentary perspective view ofa sheet cut to form a lap for a joint, and
`Figure 5 a fragmentary perspective view of the sheet shown in Figure 4 having the lap turned up into position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l indicates a lamp shade whichmay be of any design or shape and which I have illustrated as a simple design comprising a side sheet 2 and a top `sheet 3. The top sheet has its edge, which forms the joint lap 4, cut at an incline to the sheet surface toward the center ofthe sheet aV distance equal to the lap as shown at 5 in Figure 4. This cutting pro,-` duces parts 6 having their adjoining edges beveled. i The lap isy then" bent up and the adjoining surfaces of the beveled edges will slide one over the other a short distance as shown in Figure 5, thus producing a lap which to the naked eye appears vto be conn tinuous. The lap is then secured to side sheet 2 by rivets 7 or other securing means such assti'tching or gluing. j
Forthepurpose of securing a support 8 to the shade, I preferably provide eyelets 9F passing through the joint and clinched thereto. The lamp support, which comprises rods 10 radiating from a ring l1, is connected to the eyelets by passing the rods therethrough and soldering or otherwise securing them in position. The eyelets also serve as securing Vmeans to hold the joint together. By constructing a joint as above described, a lamp shade of any design or shape may be made without the use of expensive dies to form the laps.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, itwill be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself 'to the precise construction set forth, butconsider that I am at liberty to malte vsuch changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A lamp-shade joint including a sheet of resilient material forming the top of a shade and having the lower part of its periphery bent to form a lap, the lap being slitted into parts having their adjoining edges beveled; a sheet `forming a continuous side wall with its upper edge taking into the lap, the lap having the beveled face of one slitted part overlapping thebeveled face of the adjoining part, and means securing the sheet forming the side wall to the lap.
2; A joint construction including a sheet'` having its lap divided into parts at spaced distances, theparts having their adjoining edges beveled, another sheet adapted to be secured to the lap, eyelets for securing the sheet to the lap, and asupport secured to the eyelets.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence `0f two subscribing witnesses.
VADOLPH SOHERER.
