CEMENT-ROAD-MAKING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESLEIGH GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful CementJihad-Making Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for finishing concrete roads and has for one of its objects the provision of an apparatus for smoothing the wet concrete when laid and striking the surface so as to properly form the camber of the road and v to form a smooth surface.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention, I have illustrated one embodiment thereofin the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan View; I Fig. 2 ,is a sectional view taken on the line 22 .ofFig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail of a slight modification.
In the embodiment illustrated, I provide a traveling frame comprising a pair of longitudinally extending side members 1,preferably formed of channel irons, which side members are connected at each end by a pair of spaced apart cross members 2 and 3. Diagonal struts 4 extend between the side members and one of the pair ofcross members at each corner to give the frame rigidity. This frame is mounted on car wheels 5, one of which is placed at each corner of the frame and for supporting the bearings 6 of the wheels I secure, on the underside of the side member 1, an angle iron 7 and slightly spaced apart therefrom and between the cross members 2 and 3, a second angle iron 8 in which is mounted the bearing.

The strike comprises a straight edge 9 which may be formed of a T-iron head down. At each end the strike is turned upwardly as at 10 and then turned as at 11 to form a support for the strike. Near each end there is provided upwardly and outwardly extending handles 12 secured to the strike and rising some distance above the strike. The handles are braced by means of a vertical brace 13.
This strike is adapted to move transversely of the frame on a pair of transversely extending rails 14, which, at their ends are secured to the side members 1 by meansof hanger bolts 15. These rails are supported mounted on brackets 17 secured between the sides of the transverse or cross members 2 and 3 of the frame.
In operation the frame is adapted to travel, or move longitudinally of the road, on the side channels 18 which are laid on each side of the road and between which the concrete is filled. The channels provide a roadway form and also provide a track for the wheels 5. The concrete isdeposited in front of the strike for a considerable length of road, after which the frame is moved up until the strike is above the deposited concrete, operators grasping the handle at each end of the strike may then move the same transversely of the road, at the same time giving the same a slight longitudinal oscillation or reciprocation as it is moved to aid in working it across the face of the concrete and, due to the fact that the rails on which the strike travels are curved, the proper camber will be imparted to the road.
Where a pavement is being laid with expansion joints which are defined by vertically set dividers which are left in place until the concrete hardens, the strike, at its middle, may be notched, as illustrated at 25 in Fig. 4, such notch being of sufficient length to provide for the longitudinal movement of the strike and to avoid passing over the divider in the concrete.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a road finishing apparatus, the combination with a supporting frame arranged to be moved longitudinally of the road, transversely extending guide members shaped to conform to the camber of the road mounted on said frame and a straight edge strike extending substantially longitudinally of the road during its entire operation and movable transversely of the road on said guide members.
