Be it` known that we, JOHN BATH and Romana. H. C. GnUNnwALD, citizens of the United States, both residing at idlorcester, in the county ot lvorcester and State of l/iassachusettsJiave invented a new and luseful Adjustable Internal Gauge, ot which the following is a specification. f
This invention relates to improvements in an internal adjustable gauge ci the type shown in the prior application of John Bath and 1Walter E. Gray, Serial No. 300,053,

One object of our present invention is to provide improved means for locking the gauge in a predetermined or Zero position. Another object is to provide an improved device for clamping the gauge in any desired position. Further objects of our invention are to provide means for protecting the operating screw from dirt and injury and also tor protecting the centers and preserving their accuracy.
Our invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parte hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, our improved gauge comprises a body 10 having an enlargedv end portion orliange 11. A threaded rod 12 has a bearing in the body 10 and is provided Vwith a shoulder 13 engaging an internal flange 14 ot the body 10, by which axial movement ot the rod 12 in one direction is prevented.
A adjustable member or head 15 is threaded on the rod 12, and is moved axially when the rod 12 is rotated. The head 15 Vis provided with a plurality of dove-tailed tapered guide-ways 16 (Fig. 3) within which tapered gauge bars 17 are slidably mounted. rEhe gauge bars are held from axial movement by engagement with the flange 11 at one end and with a collar 18 at the opposite end.

A key 21 mounted in the flange 11 extends into the slot 19 and a similar key 22 mounted in the collar 18 extends into the slot 20. The gauge-bar 17a is thus held for radial movement only and itself limits the movement ot each of the other gauge-bars to radial movement only, as the bars are all held in spaced relation in the head 15.
ylhe collar 18 is mounted on a sleeve 23V which in turn is slidable on a reduced end portion 2a ot' the threaded rod 12, to which it is keyed. A nut 24@ is mounted on a threaded outer portion 25ct the rod 12 and acts against a washer 2G which in turn engages an inner shoulder on the sleeve 23. A check nut 27 locks the nut 211 in adjusted position and also extends beyond the end oi' the threaded portion 25 of the rod 12, thus preventing accidental injury of the center hole therein. Bymeans of the nuts 24 and 27, the collar 18 may be adjusted to take up all back-lash at the ends ot the gauge bars 17.
An additional collar or ring 28 is mounted on the outer end ot the sleeve 28 and may be secured in adjusted position thereon by a set-screw 29. As thecollar 2S rotates with the threaded rod 12 and the collar 18 is relatively stationary, we provide graduations 30 upon the collar 18 and a zero mark 31 on the collar 28 by which gauge readings may be obtained. The gauge may be set to any desired size, after which the Zero marl; 31 may be brought to correspond with the zero of the graduations 30 and the graduations will then indicate variations above or below the desired size.
It is to be noted that the inner portion 32 or" the sleeve 23 extends into a recess 33 in the outer end of the head 15, while an extension 3l onthe headl similarly extends into a recess 35 in the end of the body 10. These extended portions protect the thread of the rod 12 from injury in every position ol the head 15. f

An adjustable internal gauge comprising a body, a threaded rod rotatable therein but held from axial movement relative thereto, a plurality of gauge bars having faces inclined to the longitudinal axis of said rod, an adjusting member threaded on one end of said rod and slidably supporting said bars, said member having inclined faces cooperating with the inclined faces of said gauge bars to adjust them radially when said member is moved axially of said rod and longitudinally o-f said gauge bars, a retaining sleeve mounted on the end of said rod adjacent said gauge bars for axial movement only relative thereto, arecessed adjusting mit for said sleeve, and a lock nut in the recess of said adjusting nut.
