TRIMMNG MACHINE.
Application filed September 29, 1920. Serial No. 413,465.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK H. YWARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sivampscott, in the county of Essex and State of lilassachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Trimming Machines; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
The present invention relates to trimming machines for use vin the manufacture of boots and shoes7 and has special reference to such machines for trimming vthe projecting y edges of the upper materials including the vamp and lining of alasted shoe preliminary to the inseam sewing operation.
y Commercial machines of this type are usually providedivith a reciprocating trim ming knife that works across a shearing face at one end of a guidev roll, the other end of the guidel roll being arranged to engage the sole of the shoe to act as a distance gage to determine the height of the trimming cut. The guide roll is driven and its peripheral surface is frusto-conical and lrnurled so that it mayvact to feed and guide the Work and to turn up the projecting edges of the vamp and lining to present them to the trimming knives. Vfith the use of this guide roll, however, fory the operator to exercise a high degree of care in order to guidek and feed the Work properly and also the roll is unable in many cases to actl properly on the edges of the vamp and lining particularly at the tip of a pointed toe shoe. ln applicants co-pend ving application, tiled of even date herewith, a machine is disclosed in which the guide roll is provided with aflange yor button at its lower end to engage the root of the channel of the sole so that the roll may act as a combined channel guide to guide the Work and a guide for presenting the projecting edges of the vamp and lining to the trimming means. On different classes of Work, however, it is desirable to make the line of the trimming cut at different distances from the sole of the shoe and with the use of a guide roll acting as a distance'gage to determine the height of the trimming cut, it is obvious thatrolls of dierent heights it is necessary must be employed for the different classes of Work. y i
Thev principal object 0f the present invention is to provide a machine for trimming the projecting edges of the vamp and lining of a lasted shoe preliminary to the inseam serving operation that overcomes the disadvantages of the prior constructions, Whilel retaining all of the advantages.
The illustrated construction comprises a novel combination consisting of trimming means and channel guide, the trimming means including a driven roll and a reciprocatory knife arranged to cooperate with a shearing action, and the channel guide icing arranged to guide the upper material to the periphery of the shearing roll While bearing in the channel to regulate the closeness of trimming.
rlhe less erect portions of the material to be trimmed first engage the channel guide, which is in advance of the shearing roll, and are thereby turned or bent up from the sole far enough to insuretheir engaging the periphery of the shearing roll instead of passing under the roll, and as they continue to move ahead they are deflected into the field of trimming by the periphery of the roll. Thus, the less erect portions pass through tvo successive stages of erection leading to the field of trimming. Preferably this channel guide is constructed and arranged to turn up and present the projecting edges of the vamp and lining to the trimming means and is adapted to facilitate trimming around the toe of a pointed shoe.
@ther features of the' present invention consist in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of Which will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
rlhe several features of the present invention Will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in Which:
