To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON B. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 7
This invention relates to an improvement in boxes and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to produce a novel and improved knock-down box of fibre or paper board, provided with metal bands or straps so constructed and arranged that the bands may be readily drawn together after the box is packed and closed, and secured together and sealed, with the result that the box may not be opened without breaking the seal.
The improved box is of familiar type in its general essentials and may be of the kind shown in Letters Patent No. 1,134,782 heretofore granted to me on April 6, 1915, and comprises in its preferred form, a tubular body made from a single blank of paper or fibre board creased to define the sides, bottom and top of the box; end cleats attached to theblank adapted to form end frames when the blank is brought to tubular form; end pieces of fibre board reinforced at the middle by a post and either attached by a folding flap to the said blank as in the aforesaid patent, or separate; and bands attached to and extending along the ends of the blank for holding the box together.
The novelty of the improved box results from the manner in which the {band is attached to the body blank and cleats, as will appear more clearly in the hereinafter specification.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the box as it appears after it has been packed, closed and handed ready for shipment.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank forming the sides, bottom and top of the.
box with the associated cleats and bands attached thereto, and shows the same as 1t appears when received shipper.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the box, as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the end walls of the box.
Fig. 5 1s a view in end elevation of the box after the same has been set up and shows the top wall or lid in open position to permit packing.
Fig. 6 1s a view similar to Fig. 5, with the top wall or lid shown in closed position and nailed to the intermediate vertical post or cleat of the end wall and before the band ends are connected together. Fig. 7 1s an end view of the box after 1t has been packed, closed and banded, ready for shipment.
Referring nowin detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings :10 and 11 indicate the top and bottom walls of the box; 12, 12 the side walls of the box and 13, 13 the end walls of the box. The top, bottom and side walls are made of a single sheet of fibre board 10*, which is creased or scored transversely as at 14, to provide the different wall sections as shown in Fig. 2, one of the side walls 12 having a flap extension 15. Secured to one face of the box blank, along its longitudinal margins, are a plurality of cleats 10, 11, 12 and 12* respectively, there being a pair of such cleats at the ends of each wall section. On the other face of the box blank, in the plane of the said cleats, are narrow, flat metallic bands 16, which are attached to the blank by nails 17, which pass through the hand, through the end margins of the wall sections of the blank, and into the cleats 10, 11, 12 12 and thus secure both the cleats and the "bands to the blank. The cleats have the usual tongue and grooves at their ends, so that when the blank is set u in box form, the tongue of one set of c eats engage in the grooves of the adjacent set of cleats. Such construction is familiar in box end structures and manifestly it may be replaced by any equivalent interlocking structure which will perform the same function;
The bands 16 are somewhat longer than the box blank 10", and are positioned before nailing with their ends 16 substantialby the packer and ly flush with the free marginal part of the top wall section 10 and with their other ends 16 projecting a suitable distancebeyond the flap extension 15 of the side wall section, as shown in Fig. 2. In nailing the bands in place to the box blank and cleats, the band ends 16 and 17 are left free and unattached, as shown in Fig. 2.
The end walls 13 each consists of a rectangular sheet 13 of fibre board, made of a plan area equal to the internal cross-sectional area of the box, with an intermediate, vertical post 13 nailed to one face. The ends of the post terminate short of the top and bottom edges of the sheet 13", (see Fig. 4) a distance equal to the depth of the cleats 10" and 11*, of the top and bottom wall sections. The end wall blanks may be attached to the main body blank so as to be folded down thereon in collapsed relation, as shown in my Patent No. 1,134,7 82 of April 6, 1915, or they may be separate, as illustrated herein. When the box blank is folded or set up in box form, the bottom and side margins of said end wall sheet are nailed to the end frame comprised by the cleats of the bottom and side walls of the box, namely, the bottom cleats 11 and the side cleats 12 12, the end wall sheet being preferably applied to the inside of the frame, as shown in Fig. 3.
In assembling a box, the end wall sheets are nailed in place as before described, and a nail 18 is driven through the bands 16, the bottom wall 11, the associated cleat 11 and into the bottom end of the post 13 of the end wall. This nail more rigidly holds the parts through which it passes together and adds strength and rigidity to the box.
As the top wall 10 is not yet attached to the end walls, it may be swung upwardly about the crease line 14 in the manner of a hinged lid to permit the box to be packed, as shown in Fig. 5. After the box has been packed, the flap 15 is folded down and the top wall is swung down into closed position and nails 19 are driven through the top wall part 10 and associated cleat 10 and into the top end of the post 13 of the end walls, as shown in Fig. 6.
This leaves the free, loose ends 16 and 16 of each of the bands 16 in some such position as that illustrated in the last named figure. In the case of each band, the band end 16 is then folded down on top of the box and the band end 16 is folded down in overlapped relation with the band end 16. As each of the band ends is free and unattached,-the band end 16 back to a point beyond the post 13", and the band end 16 to a point beyond the proximate corner edge of the boxample room is given for the insertion of a band stretching tool below the overlapped band ends, so that the band may be drawn taut about the box and a seal 20 may be applied. The seal shown is the u :11 known crimp clip or may be any other kind of seal or device to securely attach the band ends together.
After the band has been sealed, a nail 21 may be driven through the twooverlapping band ends 16, 17 and through the top wall 10 and into the cleat 10 The box 1s thus securely handed and sealed.
When the top wall or lid is in its closed position, its free margin overlaps the flap extension of the side wall 12, and a strip of adhesive tape 22 is employed to seal the box at the free marginal edge of said top wall and the marginal to part of the side wall 12, adjacent the ap extension 15. Preferably but not necessarily, the box is bound at its middle by a band 23 the ends of which are engaged by a suitable tool and drawn taut after which said ends are secured together as by a sealing clip 24 similar to the clips 20, securing the ends of the bands 16 and 17 together.
The box is so constructed and assembled that when packed and bound as described, it cannot be opened without breaking the sealing clips or hands, either of which would be readily noticed. By reason of the band ends 16* covering up the nails 19, said nails cannot be drawn or pulled out without breaking the band.
In assembling the box blank, the cleats and the hands together, the nails 17 are driven through the bands, which rigidly hold the nails from coming out and also protect the ends of the finished box from becoming multilated or torn.
I claim as my invention 1. A box, comprising a blank, creased to define sides, bottom and top section, end cleats attached to said blank and constructed to form end frames when the blank is folded into tubular form, and end blanks adapted to be attached to said end frames, said .end blanks being provided with intermediate posts to extend between opposed end cleats, metal bands attached to the ends of the bottom wall section, to the ends of each of the side wall sections and to the ends of a narrow part only of the top wall section adjacent to the side wall section to which said top wall section is connected, said bands having free end parts which are adapted to be brought into overlapping relation above the top section of the box after the box is packed and to be drawn together,with a space below the overlapped band ends for the insertion of a tool for drawing said band ends together and attaching and sealing -them.
2. A blank for a box comprising side wall sections, a bottom wall section and a top wall section, end cleats attached to said sections and constructed to form end frames wall section adjacent to the side wall section to which it is connected by the bands, said bands having free end parts, one of which extends approximately to the lateral edge of the top wall section and the other of which projects beyond the lateral edge of the associated side wall section, whereby said end parts may be brought into overlapped relation on said top wall section when the blank is folded into tubular form.
