To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Crrnnnus F. YooUM, a (iltlZell. of the United States, and a resident ofFindlay, in the county of Hancock.
and State. of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Rooter-Tooth.Attachment for described, which isstrong and durable in its construction, capable of being easily attached to a bucket, and has a cutting tooth adapted to be used with one end as a cuttingedge, and when such edge has become worn to be'then reversed to use the other end as a cutting edge.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while in its broader aspect it is capable of'embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the acc01npanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bucket embodying the invention with an associated carrying chain. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one end portion thereof, and Figs. 3 and 1 are enlarged side and top plan views of a rooter tooth holder embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 11 designates the nose plate of a bucket of the flat bottom type, which plate is formed with a front beveled cutting edge 2 and may be of any desired length to suit the width of the trench to be dug. The plate 1 is secured at each end to a bracket 3'attached to a carrying chain 4 at the respective end of the bucket. A plate 5 is attached to and projects rearwardly from the rear edge of the nose plate 1, and, in the present instance, is curved to project up between the carrying chains l.
The rooter attachments embodying the invention comprise a plurality of toothholders 6, which are substantially U-form or slotted to adapt them to straddle and closely fit over the forward edge portion of 1924. Serial No. 725,008.

The outer end "of each holder 6 is provided with a recess or socket 11,. which is disposed longitudinally of the holder and extends to the bottom of the recess 10 and is beveled atits inner end to correspond to the bevel of said recess. The socket 11 is preferably of rectangular 'fo'rnr'in'c'rosssection with its opposing sides parallel, and is adapted to receive a, rooterl toiothQ'lQ, whichv is of greater length than the socket to adapt its forward end to project a dis tance therefrom and is adapted to 'fit inthe socket to prevent lateral play. Each tooth 12, in the present instance, is of rhomboidal. form, with the bevel of its ends corresponding to the bevel 2 of the nose plate so that either end of the tooth may be inserted into the socket 11 of a. holder 6 and placed in flat end-thrust engagement with the beveled cutting edge of the nose plate. The side holders of the socket 11 of the holder are each provided with an aperture 13 adapted to register with a central aperture through the tooth for receiving a rivet 14- or other suitable securing means whereby a tooth may be firmly held in engagement with the holder. The aperture 13 is oblong to allow for tooth wear when reversed.
It is evident that any desired number of tooth-holders 6 may be provided along the front edge of a bucket nose plate 1, and that the teeth 12, when their outer beveled digging ends become worn, may be reversed in the holders so that theother ends of the teeth may be employed as the outer cutting ends thereof, it being merely necessary to remove the rivets or other securing means 14 to reverse the teeth and then to re-rivet or secure the teeth in the holders. This materially prolongs the life of the teeth without replacing, and enables the teeth to be easily reversed'when they become worn at one end.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form or the parts, or to use in connection with any particular style of bucket, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with an excavating bucket, of socketed rooter teeth holders attached to the nose plate of the bucket, and rooter teeth of rhomboidal form removably and reversibly mounted in the sockets of said holders and'in inner end-thrust engagement with the nose plate edge.
2. The combination with an excavating bucket, of socketed rooter teeth holders attached to the nose plate of the bucket, and rooter teeth mounted in said holder sockets in inner end-thrust engagement with the cutting edge of the bucket nose plate.
3. The combination with the nose plate of an excavating bucket, of individual rooter teeth holders secured to the nose plate in straddling engagement therewith and having their outer ends longitudinally socketed, and rooter teeth of rhomboidal form reversibly mounted in the holder sockets to adapt either end thereof to be used as a cutting end and'the other to bear against the cutting edge of the nose plate.
4;. The combination with an excavating bucket having a nose plate with abeveled cutting edge, of rooter teeth holders mounted on and projecting from the cutting edge of the nose plate, and having their outer ends longitudinally socketed, and rooter teeth reversibly mounted in the holder sockets and having their ends beveled in parallel relation to adapteither to be placed in parallel abutment with the beveled cutting edge of the nose plate and the other to form a cutting edge.
In an excavating bucket, a rooter tooth holder having a socket therein attached to the nose plate of the bucket, a reversible rooter tooth of substantially rhomboidal form in said socket having its inner end in thrust engagement with the edge of the nose plate, and means extending through said tooth for removably connecting the tooth to the holder, said means constituting the sole securing means therefor.
6. In an excavating bucket, a rooter tooth holder having a socket therein attached to the nose plate of the bucket, a reversible rooter tooth of substantially rhomboidal form in said socket having its inner end in thrust engagement with the edge of the nose plate, the upper and lower surfaces of said tooth lying in a plane approximately parallel to the longitudinal plane of the holder, and means extending through said tooth for removably connecting the tooth to the holder.
