IMPROVEMENT lN- LAND-MARKERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,372, dated July 21, 1874; application filed June 6, 1874.

I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL PHILLIPS, of Quincy, Adams county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Land-Markers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to an auxiliary guide for land-markers; and consists in a shaft, one end. of which is secured to the marker or planter, a hinge being provided at its center, so that the shaft can be folded over upon the main device. A check-bar is placed to operate across the hinge, and thus render the shaft rigid when desired. 'The extreme end of the shaft is provided with a marker of suitable construction. The object of the invention is to provide a convenient portable auxiliary device to assist in the laying off of land preparatory to planting.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodyin g the invention with the shaft extended. Fi g. 2 is the same with the shaft folded.

A, in the accompanying drawings,is the landmarker, to which is secured, by the pin a, one end of the shaft B, which extends past the checkpin 1), against which it bears when in operation, extending a suitable distance on one side of the marker A over the unmarked land. The shaft B is jointed at its center, so as to fold upward, and is provided with the checkbar D, secured to the shaft upon one side of the hinge E, over which it passes, being provided on the part beyond the hinge with an aperture, which receives the pin 0, securing the check-bar in position. By this arrangement the shaft B can be folded over upon the main device when desired, thus obviating the danger of breaking it when the marker A is turned at the end of the field, and also facilitating its transportation, while the check-bar D serves to render the shaft rigid when in operation. The extreme outer end of the shaft is provided with the marker F, the lower edge of which is parallel to the lower edge of the runners of the marker A, and is properly braced on each side to the shaft.

The distance between the marker F and the opposite runner on the marker A should be twice the distance between each two rows-to be laid off, so that when the end of the field is reached, the center runner of the marker A being guided on the line traced by the marker F, the operator is enabled to lay off three new lines every time the device crossesthe field.

The invention can be used advantageously in connection with any device for planting grain or seed.

I am aware that the land-marker A is an old construction, and lay no claim thereto. Neither do I claim, broadly, a marker having a jointed shaft, and constructed to fold upon the device to which it is attached; but

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The guide for marking laud, composed. of I the jointed shaft B, provided with the check.- bar D, pin 6, and marker F, arranged and operated substantially as and'for the uses and purposes set forth.
