Tirana-nennen CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed August 3, 1921. Serial No.- 489,501.
TOUZZ whom t may concer/a Be it known that I, BRYANT II. BLoon, a citizen of the. United Sta-tes, Yresiding at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread- Gauge Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thread gauges and particularly to means for facilitating the operation and increasing the accuracy of thread gauges.
In performing thread gaging operations, it is essential that th-e threaded engagement Abetween the gauge and the part being gaged should be free from any obstruction therebetween which might prevent a free gaging contact between such elements. It often happens, however, that dirt, chips or other foreign matter in the threads of the part being' gaged prevent suoli freedom of operation. The primary object of the present invention is to provide a thread gauge with a notch placed at the proper predetermined position therein for receiving any foreign matter in the gaged part before it reaches a posit-ion likely to interfere with thegaging operation, such provision in the gauge thereby operating to assure the necessary freedom of contact between the said parts and preventing undue wear of the threaded portions of the gauge.
lVith the above object in view, my invention consists in the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification 'and illust-rated in the acco1n panying drawing. In such drawing annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification, I have shown my invention as embodied'in a` plug thread gauge but it will be understood that t-he invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing .is not to be construed as deiining or limiting the` scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for thatpurpose.
Referring to the figures of the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a reversible plug thread gauge embodying the p invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the saine.
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 4; is a perspective view of a noir reversibleplug thread gauge embodying the invention.
Referring to Figs. l, and il of the drawing, l indicates a reversible gauge provided with gaging threads 2 thereon. The gauge is illustrated as being secured 'to a gaging handle 3 by means of. an axial screw 4, the screw threadedly engaging in the handle and the screw head being adapted to enter a recess 5 in the outer end ofthe gauge whereby the screw head is flush with the end of the gauge.
As illustrated in Fig. 3, indicates the helical starting portion of the gaging thread which joins the full thread i' at a point 8. At this juncture of the starting portion of the thread with the full thread, I cut the thread away to provide a notch 9. Such a notch may be provided in both ends of the reversible gauge shown in the dra-wing. Then performing a gaging operation, any dirt, chips or foreign matter in the part being gaged will be. forced into this notch before becoming wedged at the full gaging portion 7 of the gaging threads. The gauge, as illustrated, comprises the usual starting thread portion 6, notched portion 9 and a sharp shoulder 10 at the beginning of the full thread 7. It will be noted that this sharp shoulder with the notch just preceding the saine, assures a clean thread to be gaged. By placing the notch in the position stated, the benefits derived therefrom are secured without sacrificing any of the advantages of the thread gauge as heretofore constructed, such advantages including the long spiral starting portion 6 of the thread. I
In Fig. 4 is illustrated a non-reversible gauge formed in accordance with the in vontion. This gauge comprises a gaging head ll on a handle l2. The threads 13 of the gauge are provided with a not h It at the juncture of the starting portion of the thread with the full thread thereof. The function of the notch and the operation of this gauge is the same as heretofore described.
l/Vhile in the drawing I have illustrated my invention as applied to plug thread gauges, it will be understood that the same is equally applicable to other forms of thread gauges,
' such for example, as ring thread gauges.
Various modifications of the invention, as
shown in the drawing, lnay he inade within ning of the 'full thread portion of the gagthe scope of the appended claims without ing thread.
departingfrom the spirit of the invention. 2. A reversible thread gauge having a What I claim is: o notch cut in the thread at each end of the `5 1. A thread gauge having a notch forni-ed gauge, such notch being formed at the junc- 15 in one convolution; of the gaging thread ture of the startingyporti'on of the thread thereof at the juncture of the starting porwith the full thread portion of the gauge.
tion of the thread with the full thread por- Invtestilnony whereof, I hereto aHix my tion thereof, the notch being so formed as Signature.
