IMPROVEMENT IN FlF'l'H-WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No, 153,327, dated July 21, 1874, application led June 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, W. FISHER, of Homer,
' in the county of (lortland and State of New to lthe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the front running-gear or express-carriage part for platform spring-wagons, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accolnpanyin g drawing, which represents a plan view of my invention, A is the outside futchell. Thisis made of one continuous piece of steel, malleable iron, or other suitable material, and runs from a block, B, to the ci'oss-slning bar C; it then runs across the bar C, and to the block B on the other side. D l) are the inside futchells, each running from one of the blocks B to the center or kin g-holt a, forminga brace to the side futchell, and runs to the. back bar G. These inside futchells are made arching about one and three-fourth inch from the points b to the blocks B, and from the point d to the back bar C. The outside futchell A runs straight from each block B to the har C. G represents the fifth wheel, placed on the arched-center futchells D, and attached to the outside futchell A by a forged post, h, and clip. The inside futchells D being arched, and the outside running straight, gives a great amount of strength, and a direct center draft is obtained from the king-bolt a.
I am aware that lifth-wheels have been oonstructed which bear some general resemblance to mine. The novelty of my improvement consists, however, in an arrangement of the parts, which I believe to possess advantages peculiar to it alone.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the straight continuous outside futchell A, blocks B B, bar C, arched inside futohells D D, and fth-wheel D, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
