Description

April 7, 1925. 1,533,013
C. F. LARSEN GAS LIGHTER Filed Aug; 6, 1924* INVENTOR ATTORNEY GWZaSEZ /SW Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
UNITED STATES CHARLES F. LARSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAS LIGHTER.
Application filed August 6, 1924. Serial No. 730,493.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. LARSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 916 E. 62nd Street, Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements inGas Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gas lighters and more particularly to that type of lighter wherein a file plate and ignition are used, the ignition oeing moved over the surface of the file plate for; creating sparks to ignite the gas. The main object of my invention is the provision of a gas lighter of the above character which includes a file plate mounted for adjustment upon a holder whereby said plate may be readily adjusted to bring different parts of the plate into the path of the ignition so that nearly the entire surface of the file plate may be utilized.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a gas lighter having a file plate of substantially arcuate form so that when the ignition tip is moved over the said plate it will at all times engage the serrated surface of the plate and'will roduce the proper amount of spark to ignite the gas.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of file plate having one face thereof arranged so that various types of advertising may be displayed thereon and used to call the publics attention to various types of advertising articles.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: I 4
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a gas lighter constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a longitudinally transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the. construction of my improved lighter, I provide a handle which is formed of substantially heavy wire or. rod of spring metal the intermediate portion of which is coiled to form a spring 1 and extending from the spring are the side arms 2 and 3. The side arm 3 extends parallel with a coil 4 which forms a suitable thumb piece when the handle is grasped by the operator. The forward end of the arm 3 is bent outwardly at right-angles as shown at 5 and thence transversely as shown at 6 to form the cross-bar which extends between the outer ends of the two arms. The outer end of the cross-bar 6 is provided with an outstanding finger portion 7 arranged parallel with the outwardly bent portion 5.
Mounted between the fingers 7 and the outstanding portion 5 is the file plate 8 which is preferably of substantially arcuate shape as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 3.
The ends of the file plate 8 are recessed, said recesses extending beyond opposite sides of the plate and forming stop blocks 9 at each side of the plate. The plate is mounted upon the cross-bar 6 with the finger 7 and outstanding end 5 arranged within the recesses at the ends of the plate whereby the plate 8 may be adjusted laterally with respect to the cross-bar 6.
The outwardly projecting end 10 of the arm 2 is threaded as at 11 and removably mounted thereon is :a sleeve 12 which carries the ignition tip 13. This ignition tip may be made of pyrophoric alloy 01'' similar material which will create a number-of sparks when brought into contact with the serrated surface of the plate 8.
Attention is directed to the fact that the outer end of the arm 2 is arranged upon the inner side of the finger 7 so as to limit the supporting movement of this arm 2 with respect to the arm 3 whereby the ignition tip 13 will always be in position or in con tact with the plate 8 so that by moving the arm 2 toward the arm 3 the frictional contact of the tip 13 with the serrated surface of the plate 8 will create ignition sparks.
The plate 8 is retained in position between the finger 7 and outturned end 5 by having a lug 15 cut from the outstanding end 5 and bent inwardly over one end of the plate, the contact of the ti 13 with the plate retaining the other en of the plate in its proper position.
It will be noted that the surface of the plate 8 opposite of the serrated surface 14 is blank and can be used for placing advertising matter thereon. It will also be aparent that the plate 8 may be adjusted aterally the length of the recesses in the ends of the-plate so that nearly the entire upper surface may be utilized so as to Ill] prolong the life of the' late, it being understood that .with the p ates in use at the present 'timethe ignition tip 13 travels the same path at all times, consequently, wearing off the serrated surface in this path.
The finger 7 may also be provided with an inwardly extending lug 15' which together with the lug 15 Will form a suitable guide for the plate in its transverse movement.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a gas lighter having incorporated in its construction certain novel features which increase the advantages of a gas lighter of this type,. and particular attention is directed to the arcuate shape of the file plate over which the ignition tip rides so as to positively bring the tip into contact with the serrated surface of the plate. 1
'While I have shown and described the will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A gas ighter including parallel spring arms, the outer ends of said arms being disposed at right-angles to the body portions, a cross-bar'carried by the outer end of one of said arms, an outstanding finger at the outer end of the cross-bar, a substantially arcuate file plate mounted'for lateral adj ustment upon the cross-bar, means. carried by the outstanding end of one ofthe arms and means carried by the outstandingarm of the cross-bar for guiding said plate in its movement and a detachable ignition tip carried by the outstanding end of the other arm for normal contact with one surface of the file plate.
- 2. A gas lighter including parallel spaced arms, the outer ends of said arms being disposed at right-angles to the body portions,
a cross-bar carried by the outer end of oneof said arms, an outstanding finger at the outer end of the cross-bar, an abrasive plate mounted for lateral adjustment upon the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
cross-bar, lugs carried by the outstanding end of one of the arms and the outstanding arm of the cross-bar for guiding'said plate in its lateral movement and a detachable ignition tip carried by the outstanding end of the other arm for norm-a1 contact with one surface of the plate. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
" CHARLES F. LARSEN.
