Be it known that I, WVILLTAM D. SCI-IAEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, inv the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for curling the hair and has for its primary object to provide a compact, inexpensive and efficient device of this character.

Further objects of my invention are to provide a device which may be worn with comfort while sleeping and which will not accidentally open or permit the hair to become released therefrom, to eliminate the necessity for heating theiron, to facilitate the winding of the hair upon the iron, and in general to provide a novel and improved device of this type.

The many other advantages of my invention will be better understood by reference to the following specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a selected embodiment thereof, in which Fig. 1 is an enlarged side elevation of a curling iron embodying my invention, the parts being in closed or folded position.

Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. 1, the parts being in extended position.

Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2 with the iron opened to receive a lock of hair.

Referring to the drawing, the curling iron comprises a substantially U-shaped handle'of spring metal and co-operatin'g curling members 11 and 12 pivotally connected to the opposite ends of the handle by pins or rivets 13 and 14: respectively. The inner portions 15 and 16 of the. members 11 and 12 respectively are bent into hook form. In the present embodiment the outer portion of the member 11 is substantially cylindrical in cross section while the hook-shaped inner portion thereof is flattened. The outer portion of the member 12 is trough-shaped while its inner portion is substantially square. To extend the iron the oppositely disposed side portions of the handle are pressed inwardly, flattening the loop and causing the boss 19 to be withdrawn from the notch 18. The members 11 and 12 are then rotated on their respective pivots to the position of Fig. 2. To exp-and the iron to receive a lock of hair the sides ofthe handle are again'slightly compressed, causing the members 11 and 12 to be spread in the manner indicated in Fig. 3. The end of the lock of hair is next inserted between these members and the pressure onthe handle released.v The iron resumes the position of Fig; 2' with the hair firmly held between the members. Theiron is then rotated to cause the hair to be wound thereon in the usual manner. Then the winding has progressed sufliciently, the iron is folded to closed position with theboss engaging the notch in the member 11. The hair cannot become unwound when the iron is in this positionandthe firm grip of the memhers 11 and 12prevents accidental release.

be readily evident. As many of these devices as are required maybe worn with perfect comfort while sleeping. The irons may be produced at small cost. While I have found that an entirely satisfactory curl can be produced with a cold iron, it should be distinctly understood thatthe iron may be applied hot if preferred.
