Description

1,532,567 R. A. ALDINGER HIGHWAY sNowPLow April 7, 1925.
Filed Mar'cn 25. 1924 y ends in a manner as designated by the referlatented lipr. 7, i925.
ROBERT A'. ALDINGER, 0F TOVN LINE, NEl/V YORK.
^ HIGHWAY sNotiPLo-w.
Application filed March 2 To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, ROBERT A. ...-LDINGER.yV a citizen of the United States, residing at rlown Line7 in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovernents in Highway Snowplow7 of which the following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to snow plows and has more particular reference to a device of this character that is adapted toV be associated withva motor vehicle truck at a point preferably upon the forward end thereof whereby the snow may be advantageously removed from highways for allowing traiiic to pass in an uncongested manner thereover.
The primary obj ect of this invention is to provide a snow plow wherein the same constitutes a power plant to be vdisposed upon the body of the motor truck and to drive at a relatively high speeda bladed fan at the front end of the truck which serves as a means for beating the snow to opposite sides of the road for quickly clearing the same therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a snow plow wherein the same inchicles a shovel or scoop ata point forwardly of the fan for directing the snow to a point to be acted upon by said propeller.
A still further object is to provide a means wherein the action of the fan may be reversed in order to at all times direct the snow away from the driver of the truck.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood the same comprises the nove-l form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
ln the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both of the views- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a motor vehicle truck equipped with a snow plow constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Now having particular reference to the drawing 5 designates generally a motor vehicle truck of any conventional design.
My invention per se constitutes the provision of a desirable frame designated generally 6 and including suitable inclined side bars 7 7 that are connected at their inner c, wel.
Serial No. 701,806.
ence characters 8-8 to the forward ends of the chassis bars of the vehicle truck' frame. rlhe forward ends of the side bars are supported off of the ground through the medium of suitable caster wheels 9. Disposed between these bars 7M? at the front ends thereof is a scoop or shovel 10 relatively in` clined as shown. The forward end of this shovel is at a point slightly spaced fromV the road surface as clearly indicated inligure 27 and journaled suitably at opposite ends of this shovel or scoop 10 are horizontally arranged worni conveyors or shafts 11-11 that are continuously rotated in the manner to be presently described in order to prevent the accumulation of the snow or ice at opposite sides of theshovel or scoop 10.
.isposed upon the body of the truck 5 in Vthe manner preferably as indicated is a suitable form of reversible high speed valvein-head motor 12, the forward end of the crankshaft of which is operatively connected to a horizontal shaft 13 that extends parallel with the longitudinal aXis of the truck frame and is suitably journaled inter# mediate its ends as shown in both of the figures. Between this shaft 13 and the crank shaft of the motor is a suitable reversing mechanism 14j whereby the direction of rotation of the crank shaft of said motor 12 may be reversed whenever desired. This shaft 13 is further equipped at a point preferably slightly forwardly of the drivers seat of the truck with a brake mechanism 15 which includes an actuating lever 16 whereby the rotation of the shaft 13 may quickly stop when the motor is out off for obvious purposes.
@peratively connected at one end through the medium of a universal joint 17 to the forward end of the shaft 13 and at its opposite end within a suitable bearing 18 carried by upstanding arms 19 of the side bars 7-7 of the frame 6 is the shaft of a rotary bladed fan 20. rlhe shaft of the fan has connection with the worm shafts 11-11 through the medium of belts 21-21.
, lt will thus be apparent from the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing that as the truck 5 is being moved over the highway an operation of the motor 12 will control the rotation of the fan 20, whereby the snow that is carried above the road surface by the scoop or shovel 10 will be blown and beat to either side of the road for manitestly completely clearing the highway ot snow, thereby allowing tratic to pass thereover.
The specific operation together with nnlnerous advantages o'l e snow plow or this character will be at once appreciated by those skille in the arta and even thon i have herein shown 'and @y 'ibetl the it practica-l embodiment or the invention with which' l ain at this tiine familiar it is nevertheless to' be nntl'erecoocl th t ininor chang-is may be ina/lle in the invent in witln' c fleptirting 'f1-oni spirit anfl scope or the appended elaiine.
Having thi-Lie described my invention .vlfat claim as nenY and'cl sire to secure by tere xatent zw in snow plow7 a 'ran 1 adapted to be n l 5 JJ, n ifotall f to i nio-Linien upon said velneral@l a allel tl'ownivaitl :ri-ins, an open ended snow sco-op c l between the free ends o the ar anrl i; clinefl tlownwartlly, a bearing supported above said iframe, a. horizontal driven shaft jonrnale'tl in er tl bearing, an exposed rotary bladetl fan can ried by s'aicll shaft, the blades of said an sweeping across the open inner end of said reageer scoop when the 'fan is operated, anal rotary screws` n'ionntecl in said scoop adjacent the opposite side Walls thereof.
2. A snow plow attachment for a Vehicle comprising a frame adapted to be pivotally supported: upon the `forward end of a vehiole, said 'frame embodying a pair of orwardly and downwardly inclined side bars, a pair of upwardly diverging arms carried by :iid side oars, a bearing :it the upper enel o'j said' jrlns, said' bea inn connecting said upper enne together, a iorwarclly and downwardly inclined scoop secured between the' free ends e? said side barsi said scoop eing open at its front and rear ends,- a second bear 'ng adapted to be carried by @aidv vehicle, l n shaft rotatably mounted in? said posed bladetl rotor carried' by ano having its blades spaced above side bars and adapted to sweep across tie inner open Lne.V o'l said scoop7 conveyor screws inonnted for rotation Within said scoop adjacent the vertical side Walls of the latter, anel driving connections between said screw and said driven shaft.
En testimony whereof l a'ix my signature.
