JOHN L. E/ICKOWEN, OF SAPULPA, OKLAHOMA.
,WATER GRCULl-LTON UNT EOR BGILERS.
Application led May 15,
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, JOHN L. vcKoWnN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Sapulpa, in the county of Creek and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful improvements in l/Vater Circulation Units for Boilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will wif enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains, to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved water circulation unit whichis adapted for disposition in the fire box of a locomotive boiler for permitting the water in the main chamber to circulate therethrough and be further heated. y
lThe object of the invention is to generally improve upon units of this class by providing one ofextreme simplicity and durability which is composed of easily procurable pipes and couplings to render the same as inexpensive as possible.
Specifically speaking, it is another object of the invention to provide a circulat-ion unit of this class which is substantially U- shaped in design, being intended to be positioned on one side of the fire box over the grate so that the flame will directly impinge upon it to heat it to an extremely high degree, there being a drain pipe associated therewith and extending through the rear end of the boiler so as to permit it to be drained by this pipe.
@ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure l is a central longitudinal vertical sectional view through a conventional type of boiler showing one of the improved circulating units installed.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken substantially on the plane of the line 2.-2 of Fie'. l.
lian the drawings, the boiler is designated generally by the letter B and as is usual, one end of this boiler is enlarged and the fire box F is located in this enlarged end, having its walls spaced from the walls of the boiler to provide a water space S. The main water chamber C is as is usual, located in advance of the fire box.
1922. Serial No. 561,069.
As before indicated, the invention resides in the employment of novel water circulation unit which is adapted for disposition in the fire box over the grate, the same being designed for connection to the inner faces of the vertical sides of the fire box and having communication with the main water chamber and water space. Each unit in its preferred form is constructed' from spaced 65 horizontally disposed conduits or pipes l which have their open' ends extended through the flue-sheet Yof the fire box so as to enable the water in the main chamber to circulate therethrough. As before pointed Y0 out, the unit is substantially U-shaped. By referring to the opposite ends of the conduits, it will be seen that they are equipped with elbows 2 carrying very short pieces of pipes 3 and that these pipes are connected 75 with the adjacent vertical extensions of a four-way coupling 4. By referring to-F ig.
2 it will be seen that the side horizontal con` nection 5 of this coupling is connected with the adjacent side wall of the iire box and opens up communication of the unit with the water space S. rlhe remaining extension 6 of the coupling which is disposed toward the rear and has a pipe 7 connected thereto and extended through the rear end of the boiler, this pipe being adapted for connection with a blow-off valve (not shown) and serving in some instances to enable the boiler to be drained.
n operation, it will be seen that ther water from ythe main chamber C of the boiler will circulate continuously through these circulating units and will consequently become additionally'heatedv to a very high degree by the flames from the re which continuously play on the unit.
By carefully considering the description on connection with the drawings, persons familiar with devices of this class will doubtless be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention. Therefore, a i more lengthy and detailed description is i deemed unnecessary. l
I claim:
The combination with a boiler including a fire box surrounded by a portion of the boiler proper to form a water space around the fire box; of a pair of substantially U-shaped circulation units for heating the water passing therethrough, said units being supported on the inner faces of the vertical sides of said tire box over the grate, each of seid units being oomposed o: a pair or horizontally disposed spaced pipes connected at their open ends with the Hue-sheet of the re box and e011- neeted together at their opposite ends by a four-Way couping, a short pipe connected `lwith the side extension of the coupling and to the rear extension and passing through lo the rear end o' the boiler.
n teslmony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN L. MCKOVEN.
