UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
AMOS BARKER, OF NEBRASKA CITY, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-DETACHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,231, dated July 21, 1874; application filed April 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AMOS BARKER, of Nebraska (Jity, Otoe County, Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Device for Detaching Horses from Vehicles, of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a top view of my improved device, shown as applied to a tongue, whiffletree, and neck-yoke.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the tongue. B is the doubletree, and G are the whiflletrees, and D is the neckyoke, which is attached to the end of the tongue in the ordinary manner. To the ends of the whit'fletrees O are attached ferrules E, upon the forward side of each of which are formed two lugs, e, to receive the tug-eyes, and which have a hole formed through them to receive the bolts F, which also pass through the tug-eyes, and thus connect the horses with the whiftletrees. The bolts F extend along the wlliffletrees O, and their inner ends are pivoted to a lever, Gr, upon the opposite sides of, and equally distant from, the pivoting-point. The lever G is pivoted to the center of the whiflletrees G, and one of its arms is extended, and to it is attached a cord or strap, H, which passes back to the dash-board of the vehicle, so that by pulling upon the cords or straps H all four of the tugs may be instantly disconnected from the whittletrees. Similar ferrules E 6, bolts F, lever G, and cord or strap H are attached to the neck-yoke D, for securing the breast-straps to it. The cord or strap H extends back to the dash-board of the vehicle, along the tongue A, and may be kept in place by being passed through one or more staples attached to said tongue. By this arrangement the tongues are disconnected from the whittletrees, and the breast-strap from the neck-yoke, at the same time. I is a small block, one end of which is slotted to receive the ring of the bridle-bit, where it is secured in place by the hook formed upon the end of a lever, J, pivoted to the block I. The other end of the block I is slotted to receive the end of a cord or strap, K, passed over the end of the hooklever J, and its other end is attached to the neck-yoke D. To the block I is attached a staple, L, to receive the inner or cross rein. By this construction, as the neck-yoke 1) drops the strain will operate the lever J, to release the bit-ring, and at the same time the strap K will slip from the said'lcver J, thus detaching the cross-reins and freeing the horses from each other at the same time they are freed from the whifiletrees and neck-yoke. The three cords or straps H may be brought together, if desired, and a single cord or strap may extend back from their point of intersection to the dash-board.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I The combination of block I, hook-lever J. staple L, and strap or cord K, for detaching the cross-reins by the descent of the neck-yoke, as shown and described.
