UNITED STATES oLIvER o. REISER, or ronns'r PARK, ILLINoIs'AssIenon TO THE n-IonAn-nson ooivr- PANY, or LoeKLAnn, OHIO, A conrona'rron or onro.
CONTAINER.
Application filed June lG, .1924. Serial No. 720,201.
To all whrmi, it may concern:
Be it 'knnwn that I, OLIVER OJREISER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Forest Park, inthe-county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Containers, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to battery boxes designed to hold the cells of a storage battery and it has particular reference to such containers as are employed for holding the storage batteries for automobiles.
The object of the invention is to provide a container for this purpose .molded or formed integrally from a single piece of suitable material in which the box is.so constructed that the liability of fracture or pulling apart of the sides of the box from the (over thereof in lifting or handling the box, is reduced to a minimum.
In the past considerable difiiculty has been experienced in the durability of such integral structures for the reason'that when lifted by the usual handles there is a tendency to exert an endwise strain on the sides and the, weight of the battery cells has tended to crank the side walls and the seals ing compound with which the top is held in place,'and to open up vents in the container through which the electrolyte escapes.
It is to avoid this difliculty and to provide a construction of handle whereby in lifting and moving the box from place to place the act of grasping the handles will tend to press the sides of the .box towards each other instead. ot subjecting them to an out ward strain, to which my invention is directed. r
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the container.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of one end taken on the lines 2-2 of Figure 1.
The box preferably as I have said of a single integral structure, is formed with side walls 1, 2, and end walls 3, 4, bottom 5 and partitions 6, 7. in the present instance illustrating a three cell battery ccntainer'with ribs 8, 8, projecting upward from thebottom of the box to sustain the plates of the battery. The end walls 4, are formed preterably somewhat thicker near the upper edge at '12 to reinforce the handles 9, 10, which extend upwardly above the containerwalls and the end walls and the handle portions are grooved out at 13 to lighten the endwalls and. by the ribbed structure to give additional strength as the corners of the box are subjected to the most strains. This grooving out the middle portion of the end walls, leaves an angular depression 1-1 for v the handle portions and a horizontal under cut ledge 15 which presents a very effective the user must press inwardly as the handles are employed and the strain both on the pro-- jcoting handle and theend walls is very,
largely avoided.
\Vhilc I have applied my invention to an integrally formed container of .the ordinary shape, I do not wish to be limited to either the particular-form shown or to an integrally formed box, as many different shapes may be utilized and the construction ofhandies while preferably for an integral structure will also be found of value for a container with the walls and partitions not integral.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as'new and. desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is
1. A container with side, end and bottom. walls with handles secured to the top of the end walls projecting upwardly in the plane ofthe end walls, said handles being solid and provided with an external under-cut ledge to compel inward pressure as the box I lifted.
I ing solid and provided tvithzidekterrial un: wall reinforced along the upper edge,' the der-cut ledge to permitgrasp of the handles handles being solid, and of the thickness of and compel inward pressure as the box is the reinforced portion, and provided with an 1 external under-cut ledge to permit grasp of e a 3.- A container formed in one integral the handlesand compel inward pressure as piece with handles projecting upwardly and the box is lifted.
integral with the end walls,'with the end OLIVER O. REISER.
