Application filed May 17,

' Be it lrnown that I, HEINRICH TOUSSAINT, a litizen of Germany and resident of Cassel-- lllilhelmshohe, Germany, have invented cer- ;ain new and useful Improvements in juperheaters for Steam Boilers, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to superheaters embodying; tubes arranged in the smol-:e fines oil steam boilers, particularly cylindrical boilers such as ships boilers. The object ot my invention is to provide a simple construction of this type, requiring but little Hiace, and permitting ready access to the ,overal parts et the structure. @ther features ot' my invention will appear from the description following` hereinafter and from the accompanyingdrawings.
ln the drawings, Fill'. l is a partial Atrout elevation showiiigr my invention applied to a cylindrical boiler with two large furnace flue 'g llig. 2 is a side elevation, with parts in section, Figi. 3 is a partial plan view with the steam collectors in section; Fia l is an enlarged `front elevation of a portion ot 'the .steam collectors, tour of the connectors, and the superheatcr tube ends attached thereto, with parts in section; Fig. is a front elevation, lwith parts in section, of a modification: and Figi: G is a horizontal sectionv ot a modification. y
ln Figs. l to 4: inclusive, connectors d are secured to the front facel of a body or casting; which in this case contains three steam collectors, two of them, g, for saturated steam, and the third, 7"', for superheated steam. The collector f is closed at its lower end, and beneath this closed end the two steam collectors g are connected by a transverse channel g2 (Fig. 2), so that the collectors g and channel g2 together lorm a U-shaped chamber. Each row of heating tubes b or b of the same group contains two superheater units. Each connector CZ is connected (at one side only) with two superheater units c or c, both belong'- ing to the same group, each connector cl having a bore orchannel lc leading to the superh'eated steam collector f and another channel Z communicating with the saturated steam collector g. From each of the channels Ic, Z' two lateral ducts extend at right angles toward the same side, these le20. sei-iai No. seance.
ducts being` connected by soldering or welding with the tubular ends of the superlheater units c or c respectively. The two connectors d belonging to like rows of adjacent groups are arranged to overlap at their adjoining ends, the connectors being of the same triangular form, but one of them having;l its horizontal side at the top,-
and the other at the bottom. They smolie box or stack /L will readily receive-the new superheater arrangement, without requiring'V to be made different in shape or size Yfrom a smoke bor:r for a boiler having no channels at the left hand' (lower) portions l the two adjoining' connectors communicate with the same steam collector (f), and
likewise, the channels at the right hand (upper) portions of companion conductors connect vith the same steam collector (y):
in Fia'. 4l, the channels at like cndsoltwo companion connectors d communicate with dille-rent steam collectors.r Another difierence lies in the fact that in Fig. 4; separate fastening` screw u isprovi'dedlor each'connector cl', whereas in Fig. 5 the same ,screw` a serves to fasten two companion connectors d. x
Another modification is shown inFig. G. The connectors zZ are ot thesame construction as in Fig. il, but the arrangement of the steam collectors f2, g is somewhat different. Theyl are formed by an inner mem-v ber 72 and an outer member g, both substantially U-shaped in cross section and connected at the front by a vertical plate or wall r, into which screws n are titted. The dimension y ot these collectors, measured from vfront to rear, is somewhat greater than that of the flat collectors of the eX- amples first described above, lout still conl siderably less than when the steam collec-v tors are one in front of the other and have lateral connections with the superheater units. l
Various modifications may be made without departing from the naturevot my in vention as set forth in the appended claims.
.I cla-im:
' l. In a superheater arrangement for ships cylindrical boilers having smoke lines arranged in groups separated by and at either sideot` an upright interval, a steam chest having an inner wall defining` a central steam passage and an outer wall having a cross-sectional outline similar to that ot the inner wall and surroundingand delining with said inner wall a pair et side steam passages, a wall closing all of said passages, a plurality ot superlieater ele ments arranged within the smoke tlues o'l' said boilers and means to connect said superheater elements with said passages comprising a plurality ot triangular shaped connectors secured to said last named wall and arranged in pairs ot overlapping' relation, each ot said connectors having a steam channel adjacent two ot' the apices thereof to .furnish communication between said super-heater elements and said passages.
2. In a superheater arrangement tor steam boilers having smoke tlues arranged in vgroups separated by uprigl'lt intervals, superheater units located in said fines, a collector tor saturated steam, located in trent ot an interval between said groups, a collector for superheated steam, located in tront of the same interval and laterally ot the lirst mentioned collector', the combined width ot said collectors being' no greater than the width ot an interval, connectors arranged in overlapping,- pairs in front ot, and directly connected to, said collectors and provided with ducts communicating rearwardly with the respective collectors, said ducts having lateral openings connected with said superheater units both at the right and at the lett o1a said interval, and the horizontal and vertical dimensions ot' each assembled ,pair of connectors being no greater respectively than the widthy of an interval and the vertical distance between adjacent rows ot smoke lines.
3. In a super-heater arrangement for steam boilers havingV smoke fines arranged in groups separated by upright intervals,
'superheater units located in said lines, a
collector tor saturated steam, located in 'front ot an interval between said groups, a collector tor superheated steam, located in front ot the same interval and laterally ot the first mentioned collector, the combined width ot said collectors being no greater than the width ot an intervahand triangular shaped connectors arranged in overlap ping` relationship in front ot the said collectors and having separate lateral openings, one tor each ot end of each superheater unit ot the same group, communicatingwith the respective collectors and superheater units, said connectors having the trent faces thereo't located in the same vertical plane and the horizontal and vertical dimensions o1 each assembled pair ot connectors being no greater respectively than the width ot an .interval and the vertical distance between adjacent rows ot smoke tlues.
ll. In a superheater arrangement tor ships cylindrical boilers having smoke tlues arranged in groups separated by and at either side ot an upright interval, a steam chest having' an inner wall defining; a central steam passage and an outer wall having' a cross-sectional outline similar' to that ot the inner wall and surrounding and detining' with said inner wall a pair of side steam passages, a wall closing all of said passages, a plurality of superheater elements arranged within the smoke -[lues ot said boilers and means to connect said superheater elements with said passages.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. I
HEINRICH TOUSSAINT.
