IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR PULVERIZING O BES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 53,172, (lated July 2l, 1874 application filed April 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SOLOMON W. KIRK and GEORGE B. AYREs, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Pulverizing Ores, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to the construction of some ofthe parts, and their combination with other parts, of a machine for grinding and pulverizing ores bearing the precious metals, and for the collection of the ores so pulverized by the use of a draft of either hot or cold air in and as a part of the process.
In the laccompanying drawings, Figure l represents a central longitudinal sectional view of such an apparatus embracing our improvements, Fig. 2, a front-end view of the same; Fig. 3, a plan view in detail of the feedhopper portions of the hollow spindle and main cylinder, and a vertical central longitudinal view of the same on an enlarged scale.
The main frame `consists of the two end plates K and K/ braced together by the four longitudinal rods k L" k k; and in these two end plates the hollow shaft G has its bearings, and upon that shaft is fastened the hollow cylinder A, and at the rear end the joining is water and air tight, but at the front end the attachment to the hollow shaft is by means of radial arms; and the front head of the hollow cylinder A is provided with an extension, H,si1nilar to the hub of a wheel, and into that hub is iitted a funnel-shaped cylinder, D, which incloses the said hollow shaft G, and is supported upon an extension of 'the front plate l, and into this funnel-shaped cylinder D is fitted the hopper B, which is closed at the top by slide-valve b and at the bottom by slide-valve b.
By this construction and arrangement of the hollow shaft G, the cylinder A, and the funnel-shaped cylinder D, and the hopper H, the orcs, when broken into the size oi'hens7 eggs, and placed in the hopper, and the valve b removed, iind their way into the interior of the cylinder A, and then, by revolving this cylinder at the rate of fifteen or twenty .revolutions per minute, with the aid (or without it) of the iron balls a a a, the pieces ofore are broken and worn down into the form of powder, which floats upon the air.
For the removal and collection of such powder the said shaft G is made hollow, except rent carries along and out with it the pulverized ore, and the same is arrested and confined in the said receiver F, but the blowing apparatus is not set to work until the cylinder A has been sufficiently filled; and then, by means of the two valves b and b', the hopper B is closed against the return ofthe powdered ore, and its only avenue of escape is through the hollow shaft G into the receiver F. The current of air may be either hot or cold, as may be desired, and by means of it the ore may be thoroughly dried, and in the place of the balls a a a lumps or slugs of any hard Inaterial may be used to assist in breaking down the rocks to powder. The funnel-shaped cylinder D is iixed and stationary upon the frame, and by its peculiar form induces the lumps of ore to roll and slide down into the cylinderA through its hub H, which incloses and turns upon it. By means of the pulley I and the gear-wheel M on the same shaft with it the large cog-wheel J is revolved, as well as the hollow shaft G, upon whichit is fastened.
In our application for Letters Patent of the United States for an amalgamating apparatus for ores, filed December 18,1873,we have described and shown a cylinder the same in general form and construction with cylinder A in this our application and the said cylinder in that other application, like the 011e in this application, is iixed upon a hollow spindle, which is thoroughly and regularly perforated with holes inside ofthe large cylinder, except the central portion, which is solid. We do not in this application make any claim for the said large cylinder and hollow spindle, except that wherein We claim' them in combination with other parts, and which were not shown and described in that other application aforesaid; and What we do herein claim as our invention 1s 1. The combination of the large cylinder A, provided with hub H, and attached to and iiXed upon the hollow spindle G, and the hub end of the cylinder, provided with feedopenings around the hollow spindle to adlnit the lumps of ore, and the said hollow spindle G, perforated with holes in a regular manner along,` its entire length, except a short central portion, which is solid, and the blowing apparatus, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the hopper B, provided with valves b and 1)',funnc1-shaped cylinder D, and cylinder A, as co-operating devices to feed the machine, and to prevent the return of the air driven in by the blowing a pparatus, substantially as described and set forth.
3. The combination of the hopper B, provided with valves b and b inserted into the funnel-shaped cylinder D, and that cylinder mounted and xed upon the main frame, and supporting the hopper, and having its mouth inserted into the hub H of the cylinder A, and the blowing,` apparatus O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
