H. F. SHINDEL I I Filed March 22, 1923 Patented Mar. 31, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT ewes.
HARRY F. SHINIDIEL, F READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO WILLSON INC., 013 READING, PENNSYLVANIA, A
soee'nns CORPORATION or PENNSYLVANIA.
EYE PROTECTOR.
Application filed March 22, 1923. Serial No. 626,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. S H INDEL, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to goggles or eye protecting appliances which comprise removable ring-encircled lenses and connected framings therefor in which the ringed lenses are separately clampable, as indicated in Willson Patent No. 1,306,367; and my particular object is to provide for loosely attaching the lens-encircling rings to their respective framings irrespective of the clamping action of the latter, as fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, the novel features belng clear- 1y defined in the claims.
Fig. 1 is an incomplete front view of a pair of goggles embodying my invention: one of the ring-encircled lenses being shown as disengaged from its framing which is only partly shown, and a part of the bridge strap being also broken away.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the lensencircling ring on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
showing in the rear the apertured bridgestrap offset of the ring.
The lens-engaging framing indicated is made of rolled-up sheet material forming an expansive eye-cup a with a lens-edge engaging flange 7 adapted to clamp or release the removable ring-encircled lens D; all substantially as indicated in said Willson Patent No. 1,306,367.
Heretofore both the lens and its encircling ring have been entirely detachable jointly from the framing, upon merely releasing the clamping action of the latter; and no determined relation of either to the framing has been provided for in re-engaging the ring, together with its previous lensor a new one as the case may be, with the framing.
The object of my present improvement is to eonvenien ly YQid and; entire d t h= respectivelya ring offset 6, and a frame pocket f" therefor, whereby the engaged ring is definitely positioned with respect to the clamping frame; and I further'provide both, said ring offset 5' and said frame pocket f with apertures, b and f respectively, for the passage ofthe connecting bridge h whereby the paired frames of the completed goggles are flexibly joined in otherwise well known manner; the effect being that the encircling ring of each lens will be strung upon said strip h soas to be yieldingly attached to its particular clamping frame even when it is released from the clamping engagement of the latter and thus permit of the substitution of a new lens for instance while insuring convenient return to its proper clamping position. It will be readily understood that adjustment of. the flexible bridge connection 7a to secure desired spacing of the separate lens frames is effected in well known manner, as by buckle h indicated in Fig. 2, and that the particular construction of the lens framings and of the lens encircling ring is immaterial excepting as to the connecting means therefor particularly set forth. Entire detachment ofthe ring encircled lenses may be readily effected by disconnection of the bridge-strap h therefrom, though the latter serves ordinarily to tie the parts together when the lens-enoircled rings are freed from the clamping action of the frames, and also to ensure the clamping of the parts in determined relation.
What I claim is: i
1. An eye protector comprising a lensc'lamping frame having a peripheral aperture, a lens-encircling ring adapted to engage said clamping frame andhavinga peripheral aperture adapted to register with said frame aperture. and a flexible strip engaged in said registering apertures to loosely connect said frame andring. I
l e e e et r aeap ng a pair at lens elainping frames eaeh having edgeengaging flange formed with an apertured peripheral pocket, a' separate lens-encircling ring for each frame flange corresponding peripheral offset apertured to register with said a ertured frame ockep, and aflexiblebridge strip adapted Q eon formed with a 1 nest said apertured frame and also tq loesee 1y attach the respective apertured rlngs t0 the frames. 7
In testimony whereof 'I my signature. Q
HARRY HIiIDE
