IMPACT DEVICE.

- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICOLAS GEoRenvrrorr, a Serbian subject, and residing at 3 Villa Ornano, Paris, XVIII, France, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Impact Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to impact devices Or hammers and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and eificient form of device of this nature, which may be employed in all situations in which pneumatically or electrically operated hammers or other like impact devices are capable of application, which will be of strong construction, not liable easily to get out of order even when used by unskilled workmen and possessing no delicate parts liable to become damaged or out of adjustment or to deteriorate to any considerable extent on exposure to atmosphere.
The invention consists in an impact device or hammer adapted to be actuated by centrifugal force.
The invention also consists in an impact device or hammer of the above character in which the centrifugal force is restrained until just before the moment of impact.
The invention also consists in an impact device or hammer comprising a rotary member having thereon one or more radially slidable blocks or like members adapted to deliver successive blows upon an anvil or striker arranged at a definite position.
The invention also consists in other details and arrangements hereinafter described or indicated.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one mode of carrying out the invention Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing one form of hammer in accordance with the invention;
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are fragmentary views similar to Figure 1 showing the positions of the impact member at varlous points in its rotation.
In carrying my invention into effect in one convenient manner, I provide a fixed casing a of circular form and of suitable size and disposedeccentrically within such casing is a member 6 adapted to be rotated by hand or by the application of any suitable power and at any convenient speed. The member I) is formed or provided with radial arms 6 which may be of any convenient number and on each of which is slidable a block a, the blocks being a good working fit upon the arms so that they may be slid thereon under the action'of centrifugal force. If necessary or desirable the arms and the apertures in the blocks in which the slide may be of rectangular or other polygonal section in order to prevent relative rotary movement between the block c and the arms I) on which they are mounted At that part of the casing most remote from the axis of the rotary member 1 ar-' range an anvil, striker, toolholder or other like member d by means of which the impact or hammer action is transferred to the' tool or other part to be operated or at.- fected, and disposed between this member d and the opposite side of the casing a is a cam-like member e. i
The arrangement is such that onrapidly rotating the member I; the blocks 0 are moved outwards along the arms until they come into contact with the wall of the easing a or until they arrive at a position determined by a suitable stop, but as soonas each member in succession engages the cam member 6 it is forced inwards against the action of centrifugal force so that such action is restrained until the block 0 reaches,
the edge 7 ofthe member 6 whereupon the block is released and under the action of the hitherto restrained centrifugal force is brought into sudden impact with the anvil or striker d, it being clear that the rapidity with whichsuch striker receives the blows or impacts will be determined by the speed of rotation of the member 1) and/or the number of impact devices carried thereby.
Theblocks c on the inside wall of the casing are so shaped that as the block leaves the striker (which by its action is depressed into the position shown in Figure 3) it engages the wall of the casing before it has become disengaged from the anvil or striker, as shown in Figure 4, and thus there is no shock between the members and the casing such as would otherwise tend to wear of the parts. 4 I
As each member then continues its movement after having acted upon the member (l it will, owing to the eccentricity of the easing, be gradually pushed in towards the axis of rotation and will be held in the innermost position by the member e until released therefrom, the whole series of operations continuing for each of the impact members 0 so long as rotation is imparted to the member 6.
The member a is preferably made adjustable as, for example, by means of the set-screw or the like 9 movable in a slot It in the casing 0 so as to ensure that the mem bers a will always fairly strike the member (l, as it will be evident that if for a given speed and a given position of the end 7' the blocks strike the. member (I, for an increase or decrease in speed they would have a tendency to strike the val] of the'casjng on one side or the other of the member d. Thus the adjustment of the member (1 allows for any desired variations in speed.
In some cases it may happen that the tool or other member struck by the blocks 0 would. be forced into violent contact with the casing by failure of the normal resistance to its movement as, for example, by the breaking of the tool or by the entry of the tool into afault or cavity in the part on which the tool operates,.and to provide ill against such a contingency I arrange the member 0! to be controlled by the springs 0 arranged in cavities 1n the member attached to or forming part of the casing.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the foregoing details of construction which are given by way of example only, as the invention consists broadly in the operation of an impact device by the action of centrifugal force, and the manner in which this operation is effee-ted, the means whereby the impact may be imparted to the device to be operated or affected by such impact, the number of parts giving successive blows and the means adopted for rotatinggthe impacting member may be varied according to the particular purpose for which the device is required or any practical conditions thatthe invention may be called on to fulfil. 7 Having now described my invention what T claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent .is:-
1. An in'ipact 'device or hammer-having, an unpaet member shdable under the influence of centrifugal force and means for moving the impact member againstthe action of the centrifugal force and for suddenly releasing the same just before the moment of impact.
2. An nnpact device or hammer comprismg a rotary member having thereon one or more radially slidable blocks adapted under the influence of centrifugal force to deliver successlve blows upon an anvil or striker located at a convenient position, and means for moving the blocks against the action of centrifugal force and releasing the same before the nioment of impact. 7
3. An impact device or hammer according to claim 2, in which the rotary member is arranged eccentrically within an outer casing while the anvil or the like is located at that part of the easingwhich is farthest removed from the axis of the rotary member.
4. An impact device or hammer according to claim 2, in which a preferably adj ustable cam. member is arranged within the casing in such a manner that the impact members are restrained from outward movement until they are to impact upon the anvil or striker.
5. An impact device or hammer comprising a. rotary member, a block movable radially outwards thereon under the action of centrifugal force, and means for forcing said block inwards against the centrifugal force and then releasing the same just before the moment ofimpact.
6. An impact device or hammer comprisillg a rotary member, a block movable radially outwards thereon under the action of centrifugal force, a casing eccentrically surrounding said rotary member, an anvil located at one part of said casing, and means for forcing said block inwards against the centrifugal force and then releasing the same just before the moment of impact.
7. An impact device or hammer comprising a rotary member, a block movable radially outwards thereon under the action of centrifugal force, a casing eccentrically surrounding said rotary member, an anvil located at one part of said casing, and a camfaced member arranged within said casing adapted to force the block inwards against the action of. centrifugal force and then release the same just before the moment of impact;
8. An impact device or hammer compris ing a rotarym'ember, a block movable radially outwards thereonunder the action of centrifugal force, a casing mzcentrically surrounding said rotary member, an anvil located at one part of said casing, and a camfaced member arranged within said casing adapted to force the block inwards against the action of centrifugal force and then release the same just before the moment of impact and means for adjusting said cam-faced member relatively to the anvil.
