ASSIGNO'ES TO ADVANCE MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORA- TION OF ILLINOIS.
VAPOR BURNER.
Application filed August 21, 1922.
To aZZ whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED D. ANTOINE, residing at Chicago, and ALBERT E. Gnnnn'r, residing at llilmette, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and both citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vapor burners for effecting the combustion of liquid and fuel, particularly adapted though not necessarily limited in its use in the fire boxes of boilers or furnaces, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character embodying a water circulating system for generating steam and which water circulating system embodies a boiler or tank from which the water is supplied and into which the hot water and vapor is delivered. the vapor or steam being then conveyed from the boiler and mixed with the fuel.
A further object is to provide an improved burner of this character enibodying improved means whereby all foreign particles such as sediment or the like will be removed from the water and confined so that they will not be carried with the vapor into the burner, thereby obviating the object-ionable difliculty which has heretofore generally been present in burners of this character, that is the clogging or fouling the parts of the device with the foreign matter,'and which accumulation has heretofore been difficult to remove.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, illustrating this invention and in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in front elevation and partly in section.
Figure 2 is -a view taken on line 2 2 Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a top open view.
Figure 4 is a detailiview taken on line 4-4 Figure 2. A
Referring more particularly to the drawings. the numeral designates generally a combustion chamber which may be of any Serial No, 583,147.
desired size and configuration, the rear Wall 11 of which preferably curves outwardly and the bottom of the cha n'lber is preferably provided adjacent the rear wall 11 with an opening 12, through which the products of combusion are delivered from the chamber. If desired the top wall of the chamber may be provided with an opening 13 so as to promote combustion in the chamber..
The combustion chamber is provided with a front wall 14 preferably of a size somewhat larger than the combustion chamber so that when the combustion chamber together with the associated parts of the burner are inserted into the fire box of a boiler or furnace, the front plate 14 will serve as a closure for the boiler opening. This plate 14 is provided with a plurality of openings 15 therethrough for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
Associated with the combustion chamber 10 is a closed tank or boiler 16 of any desired size and configuration and is provided with an inlet opening 17 through which water is supplied to the! boiler from any suitable source such as the city supply. Encompassing this opening 17- is a valve seat 18 having a control valve 19 provided with a stem 20 arranged within the boiler.
This stem 20 is preferably mounted within-a casing 21 and is adapted to be shifted longitudinally to shift the valve 19 to open and close the inlet 17, in any suitable manner preferably by means of a valve. 22 connected with a lever 23 fulcrumed intermediate its ends as at 24, the free end of the lever being connected as at 25 with the stem 20.
The boiler is provided with an outlet opening 26 for the water and connected with this outlet is a pipe 27 which discharges into a chamber 28, of any desired size and configuration. This chamber 28 may be formed as acasing or from a pipe section, and leading from the casing is a pipe 29. The casing or section 28 is preferably located in advance of the, plate 14 to extend in a direction across the combustion chamher, and this casing or section-28 constitutes an initial heater for the water in a manner as will be hereinafter described.
The pipe 29 is preferably located exterior of the combustion chamber 10 and extends rearwardly along the outside-of the chamher to a point beyond the rear wall 11 and then extends transversely at 30 behind the wall and'is closed by means of a suitable closure 31.
Connected with the pipe 30 to extend upwardly therefrom and in close proximity to the outer surface of the rear wall 11 of the chamber are a' plurality of pipes 32 which discharge into a pipe or header 33 and which header is connected as at 34 with a return pipe 35 that discharges into the boiler l6'as at 36 and at, a point above the outlet 0 ening 26. The Water from the boiler wi 1 be discharged therefrom through the outlet 26 and will circulate through pipe 27 section 28, pipe 29, pipe 30, pipes 32, header 33, and pipe 35 back to the boiler.
A burner 37 of any desired size and configuration is supported beneath the section 28 so that the products of combustion therefrom will be delivered against the section 28 to heat the same, thereby heating the water' therein which will not only generate steam in the section 28 but will induce a circulation of the water.
If desired, and in order to provide a short course of circulation of the water during the initial heating, a branch circuit may be provided and to that end a pipe section 38 may be connected as at 39 with the pipe 29 depending therefrom and connected with a pipe 40 which in turn is connected with another pipe 41, the latter being connected with,
and discharging into the pipe 35 by means of a suitable coupling 42 preferably arranged in close proximity to the boiler.
If desired, a cut off valve 43 may be provided in the branch circulation pipes 38, 40,
41, for cutting ofi' said pipes after the water has been initially heated to a suflicient temperature.
l the pipes 47 and 48.
Leading from the boiler 16 preferably from a dome 49 thereof is a pipe 5 0 for conveying steam or vapor to the nozzles 43 and 44 preferably through a pipe 51 which is in communication with each of the nozzles 43 and 44 and in such a manner that the respective valves 45 and 46 will control both the supply of fuel and the supply of vapor.
In operation, the, initial heating burner 37,
being supplied with fuel 01' gas from any lating system embodying the pipes 38, 40,
and 41, is employed, the valve 43 is opened and there will be a local circulation of the water from the boiler through the opening 36 section 28, pipes 38, 40, 41, back to the boiler through the opening 36.
If the local'circulation system is not employed then the circulation will be made from the boiler through the opening 26, pipe 27, section 28, pipes29, 30, 32, header 33, pipe 35, back to the boiler through the opening 36.
After suflicient steam has-been generated and delivered into boiler, either one or both of the valves 45 and 46 controlling the vapor and fuel supply are adjusted or opened so that the steamwill be delivered from the boiler 16 through the pipe 50 and branch pipe 51 to the nozzles 43 and 44. The fuel and vapor being mixed will be delivered through the openings 15 into the combustion chamber 10 where it is ignited by means of pilot burner 52, the flame being delivered through the opening 53 into the combustion chamber.
The products of combustion in the com- 7 The boiler 16 is provided with an outlet valve 54 for the steam and the steam which is'delivered' through this valve may be conducted to any suitable point of use.
i l The valve 54 is so adjusted that it will not interfere withthe desired steam pressure in the boiler Or with the pressure or'head of the water being supplied to the boiler through the inlet 17.
If desired the boiler maybe provided with a discharge outlet 55 leading from the bottom thereof and controlled by a suitable valve 56, for blowing off or cleaning out the sediment or foreign particles which will be separated from the water and will accumulate in the bottom of the boiler. The boiler may be provided with a chamber or recessed portion 57 into which the sediment will settle. If desired a suitable gauge glass 58 may be provided for the boiler.
\Vith' this improved construction, the water circulating system and the provision of the boiler 16 se ve as a means whereby the water will be purified beforeit is delivered to the fuel nozzles and all foreign particles such as sediment or the like which is carried by the water will be separated therefrom and discharged in the boiler, due to the fact that the water is converted into vapor after it leaves the boiler and before it is delivered back into the boiler, the vapor supply to the fuel nozzles being delivered thereto directly from the boiler and after the vapor has been delivered into the boiler With the circulating Water.
B the provisions of the nozzles 43 and 4A of. ditlerent capacities, it will be manifest that under some conditions one nozzle Will be all that Will be required to supply'sufiicient fuel to the combustion. chamber, under normal conditions, but With abnormal conditions, the additional or other burner may be brought into use, and the second burner may be or" a capacity that its use only may be all that is necessary but it is, of course, to be understood that both nozzles may be employed at the same time thereby increasing the capacity or quantity of fuel Whenever desired. r p lVhile the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts Within the/scope of the claims Without departing from the spirit of this invention.
