G. W. SGHOFILED'.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo GEORGE YV. SOHOFIELD, OF UNITED STATES ARMY, ASSIGNOB TO CHARLES P. DEANE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLHOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 53,119, dated July 14, 1874; application tiled May 19, 1874.
To alt whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SoIIoEIELD, ofthe United States Army, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Tool- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full., clear, and exact description of the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings making' a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents in perspective the tools and handle as they appear when closed up within or against each other. Fig. 2 represents in perspective one ot the parts of the combined instrument turned up and swung around as for use. Fig. 3 represents a similar view ot' the instrument with the part as shown in Fig. 2 in another position. Fig. 4 represents a section through the combined instrument, with one ot' the tools swung out of the handle as for use. Fig. 5 represents some of the forms ot' tools that may be combined with the handle.
Myinvention consists, lirst, in a tool-handle or holder, composed of two parts swiveljointed together, so that one part may be raised and swung around on the other part, so as to form a tool ot' both parts for special purposes. It further consists in combining', with a handle composed of two parts swivel-jointed together, a series of tools that can be swung out ot or into said handle, and locked in one or both positions, as will be explained.
A and B are the two parts or pieces which under ordinary circumstances t'orin the handle for containing the series oftools a b c d e, or such others as may be preferred. The pieces or parts A B are united by a device as atj', (seen more distinctly in Fig. 4.,) which device constitutes both a swivel and hinged connection, the part A being controlled by the pivot portion ot' the piece f, and the part B by the hinged portion of said piece. Vhen the part B is rst raised up upon the hinge l]`oint,.and then turned around on the swivel portion, it will be in the position shown in Fig. 2, in which the part B may be used for a boot-hook, or for a hoof-cleaner. Or this part B may be turned into the position shown in Fig. 3, and be used for the same purposes above stated. Or by taking the part B in the hand, the other part, A, may be used as a hammer t'or tapping in light articles, such as gunscrews or slides, or even tacks. On the part B, there is a stud, t', which when said part is shut down upon the other part, A, passes into one or the other ot' the holes 2 in the several tools, so as to lock them in place whether swung out for use, or in the handle for easy and compact transportation in the pocket. There is also upon the part B, a swell or projection as at n, to give strength for the pivot by which said piece is pivoted to the swivel pivot f, and it also makes space between the handles for the tools, holds them when turned in, and allows said part B to turn far enough upon its pivot to draw the stud t' out of the locking-holes l 2 bet'ore said part can swivel around with the piece j'.
As above stated, the two parts of the handle become a hook, and a hammer. Gonnected with them are a pair of screw-drivers, a b. There may be attached other tools, such as shown at c (l e, viz A blade, a picker, and a claw, also furnished with the locking-holes l 2, so that they may be locked out for use, or in for security in the handle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A tool handle or holder, composed of the two parts or pieces A B, united by a swivel and hinge connection, so that one part may be raised up and turned around upon the other part, as and for the purpose described and represented.
2. In combination with the two parts A B, swivel-hin ged together, as described, the series ot' tools pivoted thereto, and capable ot being looked when swung out for use, or into the handle for compactness and safety, as described and represented.
l GEORGE IV. SOIIOFIELD.
