J. CARDINAL BOILER PLUG Filed Aug. 27, 1924 25 ii Q WlTNES SES MENTOR Joaz'PH C'mnwzzl,
ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 24, 1925.
cairn stares 'J'OSEPI-I CARDINAL, F BROOKITYN, NEW YORK.
BOILER PLUG.
Application filed August 27, 1924. Serial No. 734,527.
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern: 1 Be it known that l, Josnrii CARDINAL, citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Boiler Plug, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in steam boiler appliances and it pertains more particularly to a plug for use in connection with boiler heads.
It is one of the primary objects of the invention to provide a plug for boiler heads which may be readily attached and removed from the head.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a plug for boilers which is locked against rotary movement during the operation of tightening or loosening the securing means thereon i It is a further object of the invention to construct a boiler plug in such a manner that the. same may be retained in position in the boiler head during theoperation of placing the plug. f
VVith the above specific commercially desirable possibilities in view I. have devised novel features including certain combina- .tions-and elements which are capable of use in specifically different relations or in connection with cooperating parts specificah ly ditlerent from those set forth herein.
My invention will be more fully understood in connection with the above and other objects in view, reterence. being had to the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a section of aboiler'head showing a plurality o1 plugs constructed in accordance with the present invention inposition therein;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is detail sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. t is a perspective view of the plug removed from the head, and i Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the elements used. in connection with the plug.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1O designates the boiler head, and 11 designates one of a'plurality of openings in such head. The reference character A designates the plug, which plug has a head 12 and a reduced shoulder 13 from which nut which is projects a stem 14:, the outer end of which is screw-threaded as shown at 15. The shoulder 13 is of substantially the same diameter as the hole to be closed, and the head 12 of the plug engages the inner face of the boiler head 10, as shown in Fig. 2. A gasket 16 is employed between the head 12 of the plug and the boiler head 10, but this gasket may, if desired, be eliminated without departing from the spirit of the invention. As more clearly shown in Fig. i, the stem 14 of the plug A is'provided intermediate of its ends with a portion 18 rectangular in cross, section, and having two oppositely disposed flat faces 19. The thickness of this rectangular section is substantialy equal to the diameter dimensionof the stem 14, as shown, and in use this rectangular portion 18 is adapted to occupy a position to the rear of the boiler head 10, as shown in Fig. 3.
The reference character livqdesignates a key and such key is substantially U-shape in cross sectional form. The side walls'20 of the key are providedwith a projecting portion 21, which is adapted to embrace the flat faces 19 of the rectangular portion 18 of the plug. This key B has an opening 22 which is adapted to receive the stem 14 110 allow the key- B to be passed over the stem with the projecting portions 21 of the key occupying a position within the opening 11 to be closed- The reference numeral 25 designates a washer,- which is adapted to pass on to the stem 14 of the plug A'atter the key B has been. positioned thereon, and 26 designates a adapted to pull the plug to position.
The device operates in the following manner: To secure the plug in the opening the stem 14 is passed through the opening from the rear in the ordinary manner. The gasket owing to the shoulder 13 isretained in posi tion and prevented from slipping with respect to the plug, thus assuring that the gasket isalways properly positioned with respect to the plug and opening. It, now, a suitable tool be inserted in the space between the defining edge of the opening 11' andthe inner edge designatedby the reference numeral 30 of the rectangular portion 18 of the same, the plug may be securely retained in position during the emplacing of the key B.
llO
to corrosion and other causes, the nuts used to secure the plugs in place freeze or stick,.
and when it is desired to remove the plug the nut cannot be loosened for this reason and great difficulty is experienced in removing, renewing, or replacing the plug. By
' referring to the. construction set forth in the present application, it will be noted that the opening 22 in the key B is nearer one end ofthe key than the other, and this provides a projecting section of the key, which ac cording to the present invention is of suflicientlength to overlap a portion of the next adjacent plug.-
By this construction it is apparent that the nut 26 may be either tightened or loosened since the plug is prevented from turning by engagement of the. key with a portion of the adjacent plug since the key receives the rectangular portion 18 of the stem of the plug. When the nut 26 isbeing tightened the longer end of the key will engage the adjacent plug on the right of the one being tightened. If, however, it is desired to remove the nut should the stem be stuck, the plug will rotate to the-left until the extended end of the key engages the extended end of the adjacent key on the left and thus prevent further turning 01 the plugs and effect a loosening of the nut.
While I fully show, describe, and have pointed out in the appended claims certain novel featuresrot construction, arrangement and operation whichcharacterize my invention, itwill be understood by those skilled in the art that I do not confine myself'to all the precise detailsof construction herein set forth, and that various omissions, substitu tions and changes in the forms, proportions, sizes and de ails ofthe device, and of the materials used and off its operation, may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention'or exceeding the scope of the appended claims,
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A, plug for-use in boilerheads having a plurality of adjacent openings to be closed, said plug comprising a body portion. adapted to be received in its respective opening, a stem projecting from said body portion, and means associated with each stem and adapted for engagement with the said means on a plug carried inan adjacent opening to prevent turning of the plug within tlie'opening during the setting or removal cit-the plug.
2. A plug for boiler head openings comprising a head, a reduced portion on said head adapted to be received Within the opening to beiclosed, a stem projecting from said head through the opening and having a threaded outer end, a rectangular portion on the stem disposed beyond the outer surface of the boiler head when the plug is seated,
a key comprising a member oi substantially U-shape in cross section having an opening in itsbight portion through which the outer end of the stem projects, said key emln'acing the rectangular portion between its side Walls to prevent relative turning movement of the plug and stem with respect to the key, anut adapted for engagement with the end of said stem for effecting relative axial movement of the plug and stem with respect to the boiler-head, the side walls of the key being of such length as toenable engagement between said key and the key of the plug closing the adjacent opening whereby the keys of adjacent plugs coact with each other to prevent turning of the plug within the opening during the setting and removal of the plug.
3. In combination with a boiler head, a plurality of plugs adapted to close the openings'in said head, and meansassociated with each of said plugs and adapted to overlap and have engagement with the means on an adjacent plug to prevent turning of the plug in the boiler head.
t.
