IMPROVEMENT IN ORNAMENTED COLLAR-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 53,6911, dated July 14,1ci'4; application tiled May 8, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES L. LIBBY, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, which drawing, consisting ol' one figure, is an elevation of a paper box, having its cover on, made according to my invention.

This invention relates to covered boxes, and many-sided in form; and consists in the ornamentation, upon the sides of the` body and cover thereof, by means of pictures or other representations of the human family or of animals, so formed and placed with reference to each other that that portion of each picture or representa-tion which is upon the side of the cover, as, for example, the head of an Indian, can, by turning the cover sufficiently far, be brought over or made to correspond with the body of a different personality or object, and thereby a large number ot' combinations can be produced between those portions of the iigures represented on the cover and those por tions represented on the body of the box, the result being that an ornamental appearance is imparted to the entire box.

The drawing shows a paper box composed of a body, A, and a cover, B, each containing different parts of the figures of characters or persons-that is to say, the cover contains, among other things, the head of an Indian, while the rest of the ligure of such Indian is contained on the body of the box. By setting the cover upon the body ot' the box, so that the head of the Indian is brought over or into correspondence with his body, the complete representation of an Indian is shown; but, by

turning the cover until the head of the Indian 1s brought over a different ligure on the body of 'the box, a new combination is shown, not

only as to the head of the Indian and the new figure below it, but also as to all the other iigures on the cover, and those below them on,`

form, and provided that the figures be properly l spaced, so that, when that part of the divided or fragmentary figure which is on the cover corresponds with any of the fragmentary igures on the body ot' the box, all the rest of those on the cover will be in correspondence with those on the body ofthe box respectively.

I do not' claim the broad idea of separating gures and pasting them upon blocks, so that the parts can be made to register and form full figures, for such is old and well known.

What I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A collar or other similar box of polygonal form ornamented by fragmentary parts of iig-v ures on the body, and other fragmentary parts of figures on the cover, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
