G. E. WEBB ET AL attain e11 1 JO 7?, v wve'ntoc end of the cord extends through a suitable opening provided in the cover 9 and has secured on the free end thereof the spring clip 17, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully described.
Supported between the side wall 3 and the partition 12 is a shaft 18 and extending therearound and having one end thereof fastened thereto is a convolute spring, the construction ofwhich is wellknown in the art. The opposite end of the spring is adapted to be fastened to a ring or band 19 and the lat ter is provided with a gear wheel 20 and the same is adapted to mesh with the cog wheel 21 mounted on the shaft 14 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The purpose of the provision ofthe spring and the intermeshing gear wheels is to provide a means for normally holding the cord wound around the drum and for further returning the article carried by the outer free end of the cord to its normal position in the manner hereinafter to be more fully described.
Secured to the cover 9 and cooperating with the opening provided therein through which extends the free end of the core is a cup shaped member 22. The purpose of this member is to provide a means for normally housing the eraser 28 which is fastened to the free end of the cord by means of the spring clip 17 whereby the eraser is supported in juXta-position to the casing in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 1. The rear or inner face of the eraser 23 is cut away as illustrated at 24: and a rib 25 is formed therein and the same tapers smaller toward one end as clearly shown in Figure 3.
The spring clip 17 is adaptedto be secured to the rib 25 and held in engagement therewith in the manner shown in Figures 3 and 4 whereby the eraser will be prevented from accidentally becoming disengaged therefrom. lVhen' it is desired to use the eraser, the operator merely pulls the same outwardly simultaneously placing the coil spring under tension. After the eraser has been used, and
thesame is released, the coil spring through the medium of the band 19 and the gear wheels 20 and 21 respectively will automatically return the eraser to its normal position within the cup shaped member 22 and rewinding the cord around the drum 15. In
this, manner an eraser may be attached to a become lost andwill at all times be at hand for ready use. Furthermore, after the penoil has been used, the same will be returned to its normal position and out of the way of the person at the desk or table.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that an attachment for typewriters or the like has been provided which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and very efficient in carrying out the objects for. which the'same is designated.
\Vhile we have shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understoodthat various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the.
invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is 1. A typewriter attachment comprising in combination, a casing, a spring drum rotatably supported therein, a flexible element wound around said drum, the free end thereof extending through an opening provided in the casing, a spring clip carried bythe free end of the flexible element, an eraser having a rib provided on the inner face thereof for engagement with the spring clip.
2. A typewriter attachment comprising in combination, a casing, a spring drum rotatably supported therein, a flexible element wound around said drum, the free end thereof-extending through an opening provided in the casing, a'spring clip carried by the free end of the flexible element, an eraser having a rib provided on the inner face thereof for engagement with the spring clip, and a receptacle supported on the casing and cooperating wit-h the .opening provided therein through which the cord extends for normally receiving the spring clip" and the eraser carried thereby.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
eLovnn E. WEBB. FLOYD HENSON.
