GEORGE C. HUME AND PETER ENDRES, 01? CHILTON, WISCONSIN.
LIFTING APPARATUS;
Application filed April 4, 1924, Serial No. 704,178.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that WGYGEORGE 0. Home and PETER ENDRES, citizens of the United States, residing at Chilton, in the county of Caliunet and State of-l Visconsin, have in-' vented certain new and useful Improvements inLifting Apparatus, of which the following is. a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in hospitals for raising patients from their beds so that their bedding can be changed, and for other similar purposes; and it consists of a portable framework and a frame provided with bands-of flexible material for supporting the patient and raising him above his bed. as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of an apparatus constructed according to this invention. Fig. Qis an end view of the same looking from the left in Fig. 1. 3 is a plan side view of the end portions of one of the bands of flexible material, and is drawn to a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
The portable framework has a horizontal bar 6 at its top of sufficient length to extend longitudinally over the bed in which the patient is resting. The ends of the bar 6 are connected to vertical members 7 by quarter bend pieces 8, and all the framework is preferably tubular for lightness and The vertical members '7 are socured and braced to the end portions of a rectangular frame 8' arranged horizontally and provided with legs 9 which rest on the floor. The framework is proportioned so that it can be stood over the bed and the patient in it, and so that it can be moved about from bed to bed with great facility.
A rectangular main frame 10 is provided, of greater length and width than the body of the patient, and is adapted to be placed over him as he lies in the bed so that it rests on the bed around him. An auxiliary frame 12 15 arranged 1ns1de one end por tion of the main frame. and one end of it is horizontal top bar 6. The lifting tackles are preferably self-supporting tackles provided with straps,-instead of the usual. cords, but any approved lifting devices may be used. Separate lifting devices '15 are provided so that each end of the frame can be raised and lowered independently of the other. j 1 Y j I The main frame -10 and the auxiliary frame 12 have pins 18 which project upwardly from their sides, and 20 are bands of flexible material, such as canvas, which are adapted to be passed underthe body of the patient and sustain him in the frame.
A hoisting tackle 21 is also secured to the top bar 6 and to the free end portion of theauxiliary frame, so that it n'iay be supported at any suitable angle withthe hori- V ontal main frame 10 to suit the head and shoulders of the patient.
Each band'20 has a fastening plate El i at one end having a hole 25 for engaging with one of thepins 18," and each plate. has also a long slot 26.-- The end portion of the band is passed downwardly through the slot and is looped around an anchor rod 27, and is then folded double and is passed upwardly through the slot. The band is adjusted in length by arranging the rod 27 at different distances from its extreme end. As the doubled portion 28 is pressed on the plate by the weight of the patient on the upper stretch oft-he band, and asthe rod 27 is longer than the slot, the band cannot slip after being adjusted in length.
The other end portion of the band is provided with a fastening plate 30 similar to the plate 24, and it has a similar hole'and slot, and'is connected to the band by a similar anchor rod. A loop-shaped handle member 31 is pivoted in an eye 325011 the outer end of the plate 30, and is used for drawing the band taut, and connect ing the plate to its pin. The lever. '31 is passed under the body of the patient and over the side bar of the frame, and is then pressed downwardly in contact with the bar until the hole in the plate slips over the pin. In Figs. 3 and 4 thehandle member is shown in a raised position for clearness of illustration. When the handle member is slid under the patient and onto the side bar of the frame its loop clears the pin'S. The free end portion of the handle member 31 is then pressed downwardly under and against the frame bar, so that it operates as a lever having the framebar as a fulcrum.
The handle member slidesron the frame bar and draws upon the band 20 until the hole in the plate 30 slips over the pin 18', both plates 24and 30 being at that time substantially horizontal and theband 20 taut. The
7 plate 30 is raised a little by hand, if neces tackle, and the whole apparatus is slid clear of the bed, the patient may be supported at an angle to the horizontal, as well as horizontally, which is sometimes desirable.
The apparatus is subsequently replaced over the bed, and'the patient is lowered onto it. This use of this apparatus saves badly injured patients from much pain and discomfort. V
What we claim is: V
1. In an apparatus for raising and supporting patients, a main framework, a frame for the patient provided with pins which project upwardly from one of its sides, bands of flexible material provided with means for connecting them to the other to the free ends of the end plates and adapted to be used as levers, with the frame bar as a fulcrum for drawing the bands tautand slipping the holes of the end plates over the pins, and lifting devices supporting the said frame in the main framework.
2. An apparatus as set forth in claim 1, the said end plat-eshavin eyes at their free ends, and the said handle 'members being loop-shaped and being pivoted in the said eyes. 7
3. In a frame for supporting a patient, side bars one of which has upwardly projecting pins, bands of flexible material jprovided with means at one end for attaching them to the other side bar of the frame, plates connected to the other ends of the flexible bands and having holes for engaging. with the said pins, and handle members pivoted to the said'plates and formed of rigidmaterial and adapted to be used as levers, with the frame bar as afulcrum, for drawing the flexible bands taut and slipping the said holes over the pins,
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
r GEORGE 0. HUME. PETER ENDRES.
