Be it known that I, ALFRED Know, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Munich. Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Insertions for Boots, of which the following is a specification.
The commonly used pneumatic insertions for boots consist of an oblong air cushion which serves essentially for supporting the longitudinal arch of the foot.
This invention relates to a pneumatic insertion for boots which is not only designed to raise the longitudinal arch but further, owing to its peculiar shape, to support at the same time the transverse arch of the foot close to the thenar eminence.
In this manner the sore or tender places near the thenar eminence are relieved so that all the painful phenomenae disappear in most cases almost instantaneously.
According to this invention the air cush ion has at the front end an extension which terminates just behind the thenar eminence of the median toes and leaves at either side a free space for the pillar-like acting emincnces of the big and little toes.
An embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example on the accompanying drawing, the only figure of which shows in plan view an air cushion constructed in accordance with the invention.
The usual part a of the air cushion which supports mainly the longitudinal arch of the foot is fixed on the flexible sole Z) of leather or other convenient material.
The air cushion a has an extension 0 directed towards the joint of the toes and vaulted like a kidney, said extension terminating a short distance behind the rear toe joints of the second, third and fourth toes.

The advancing extension 0 leaves at the two sides 03, e, a sufiiciently large space for the big toe and for the little toe so that the two pillars of the front transverse archfor the toe joint,viz. the big toe and the little toeeminences-rest upon the sole 1) which forms the support, the middle part of the transverse arch being well supported by the ad vanced part of the air cushion. In this manner the longitudinal or instep arch and the central part of the transversal or metatarsal arch of the foot are separately and adjust ably supported and corrected.
It may be mentioned that the characteristic feature of the invention consists in the arrangement of an extension 0, the air cushion itself being of any desired construction. The inner space of the air cushion may be subdivided into two or more non-communicating compartments, for instance into two, as illustrated, or it may be composed of two separate parts, a main part and a front secondary part, said parts joining one another directly or being arranged at a convenient distance apart. Each individual compartment has its own air valve.
I claim In combination with a flexible insole for boots or shoes, an inflatable air cushion adapted to support the instep arch of the foot and having an extension at its front part, the latter presenting a non-communieating separately-inflatable air cushion, lo-
