UNITED STATEs BERRY COPELAN'D AND JACOB W. GIR'IO'N, OF SHELBYVILLE, INDIANA.
ROJAD DRAG.
yApplication Iuned July 2,4,
To all whom it may concer/a:
Beit known that we, Bruni. .CornLANn yand JACOB W. GIn'roN, citizens of the United States, `residing atShelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of lndiana, have invented new and ,useful Improvements in Road Drags, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road building machinery and more particularly to road drags.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a road drag ladapted to till and level vehicle tracks worn in roads and distribute any surplus road material, remaining from the filling and leveling operation, across the surface of the road.
Another object of this inventionl resides in the provision of a road drag adapted to initially fill and level vehicle tracks worn in a road and finally distribute any surplus road material, remaining from the filling and leveling operation, across the road surface so minor depressions will be filled and leveled and all large rocks or the like cast aside.
lith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of elements to be. hereinafter set forth' in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a road drag constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a pla-n view thereof with the truck removed.
Fig. 3 is a botto-1n plan view.
Fig. t is a. fro-nt view thereof.
Fig. 5 is across-sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig.
Fig. 6 is a similar view on line 6 6 of ln the present embodiment of this inven4 tion the numeral 5 designatesa truck which consists of a frame 6 preferably supported at its rear end by two `wheels 7 and at its front end by a single wheel 8. 4
Carried beneathl the truck 5 as by means of links 9 or' the 1like: is. a drag frame 10 to the under side ofjv'hichx is secured scraper blades 11, a leveling bladel 12 and ai distributing blade 13 l t Y,

cated at Ithe front rend of the frame 10 and arearranged so to converge rearwardly and provide a passageway 141- adjacent .what
`would be `their point of intersection to per mit the loose road material collected by .the blades ,to be discharged in the vehicle tracks formed in the .road over which `the ,drag is drawn. In forming the passageway 14, the rear end of one of the blades 11 terminates somewhat forward of that of thel other so as to discharge the road material in the path of the leveling blade 12.
The aforesaid leveling blade 12 is disposed diagonally to the rear of the scraper blades 11 and is provided with a passageway 15 lying out of alignment with the passageway 111 so .the road material deposited in the vehicle tracks, in alignment with the passageway, will be leveled and any surplus ma terial remaining from the leveling operation will be directed through the passageway 15 for further distribution by the distributing blade 13.
The distributing blade 13 is located to the rear of the leveling blade 12 and extends diagonally across the frame in the opposite direction occupied by said leveling blade 12v so the road material discharged through the passageway 15 will be distributed across the road surface to fill minor depressions.
lith the ground engagiiig blades arranged as aforesaid, that area of the road subjected to the greatest wear will initially be filled and leveled, after which the surplus road material will be distributed across the road, and any large rocks or the like in the path of the blades will be cast to one side of the road out of the pat-h of vehicles.
In the present disclosure the drag frame is constructed of wooden beams having its ground engaging blades protected by metal but, where the drag is made. entirely yof metal, the blades will be formed to provide p-assageways such as 14 and 15.
lith this invention fully set forth, it is manifest that a road drag of great utility is produced and, tl'n'ough the particular arrangement of the ground engaging blades, that area of a road subjected to the greatest wear can readily be repaired in the minimum length of time. v l
,Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to protect by letters patent i. .e maas-agr @f the tiara-Cta sa' tout comprisin a drag frame, scraper blades earried there a leveling blade to the rear of the scraper blades and having its lower edge disposed on different horizontal planes with a passageway dividing the lowerrnost edge of the leveling blade disposing the uppermost edge on one side thereof and the lower-l lnost edge on the other side thereof, and a Sstribnting blade to the rear of the leveling ade.
2. A road drag of the character set forth comprising a frame, scraper blades Carried thereby, a leveling blade to the rear of the scraper blade and having its ground engaging edge out away from one side thereof and continued into a passageway of greaterheight than the out away portion, and a distribnting blade to the rear of the leveling blade.
3. A road drag of the character set forth comprising a fra-lne, scraper blades carried at the forward end thereof, a leveling blade disposed to the rear of the scraper blades and having the major portion of its ground engaging edge lying on a horizontal plane beneath the 'plane occupied by the minor portion thereof with an enlarged passageway separating the major portion and 'minor portion thereof, and a distributing blade to the rear of the leveling blade.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
