POWDER-TAMPNG TOOL.

T0 all '2t-hom 'it m 61g/ concern Be it known that l, ROBERT V. HUN, a citizen of United States, residing at Cottondale, Alabama, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Powder- ',lamping Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to miners tools and has special reference to a tamping tool for tamping charges of powder, dynamite and other explosives such as are used by miners in blasting operations.
Heretofore such tools have been made. with tamping heads or ends of copper, or other non-sparking metal, suitably secured to a longrod of cheaper material such as iron or the like. Usually copper heads have been employed and such tools, by reason of the employment of this relatively expensive material, are costly to manufacture. Moreover, tamping tools thus constructed are essentially heavy and the heads, when worn, cannot be replaced by the miner but either anew tool has to be bought or the most expensive part of the old tool has to be renewed by a skilled mechanic.
The most important objects of the present invention are to provide a novel tamping` tool having a rigid handle or stem and a wooden head, the latter being so constructed and connected to the handle as to be capable of being readily renewed by the miner himself, and to provide a novel connection between the handle and head.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tamping tool.
Figure 2 is a similar side elevation at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a. section on the line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is shown a tamping tool having a shank 10 formed of rod iron and provided at one end with a scraper 11 of vthe handle end and provided at that end with a tongue 17 having an opening 19 therein to receive a bolt 20 which passes through the eyes 15 and is provided with a flat nut 21. It is to be noted that the head of this bolt and the nut 21 are so proportioned as to lie behind the shoulders formed between the tongue 17 and the body of the head 16. Moreover the shank end of the tongue has a flat surface 22 against which the end of the shank 10` bears when the device is assembled so that the head, by this means, is prevented from turning on the bolt 20.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a head of this description can be readily cut by a miner from an ordinary piece of wood and can be inserted, in place of an injured or destroyed head, by simply unscrewing the shank, removing the bolt and withdrawing the injured head, after which the new head can he attached by inserting its tongue between the eyes, replacing the bolt and screwing up the shank.
Thus no special skill or tools are needed to repair a broken or injured tamp-ing tool constructed in accordance with this invention, the original cost of such a tool is low and repairs are practicallywithout expense.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the ,invention to the exact form hereinv shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
l. A tamping tool for miners comprising a metallic shank, a head receiving connection screwed on said shank and provided with opposed bolt receiving openings, a wooden head provided with an end received n. said socket, a, bolt passing through said a substantially cylindrical ytool head having one. endredueed to provide a tong1ie5 said tongue being fitted between said eyes and provided with an'opening registering with the eyes, a bolt' passing through the eyes and opening, and a` flat end on said tongue against which the extremity of the threaded end of said shank` bears.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ROBERT' V'. HUFF.
