Be it known that I, EDWARD HAA's, a citizen of the United States. residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, in the State .of New York, have invented certain new v and useful Improvements in Wrapping Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in wrapping machines, and more particularly to an improvement in machines for wrapping irregularly shaped articles, such as lollypops. Y I
It has been proposed heretoforeto wrap lollypops and the like by machine, but, so far as known, the machines heretofore ,produced for this purpose have not proven successful, with the result that lollypops are still wrapped by hand. 'llhe object of the present invention is to improve upon-the construction of wrapping machines of this type in order to wrap lollypops and-similar articles mu h faster and better than the wrapping ca be accomplished by hand. For convenience of description and to illustrate the principles of the invention, the improved wrapping machine will be described as particularly adapted; for wrapping lolly ops. It will be understood,

tain features of it are equally well adapted for use in wrapping other irregularly A lollypop consists of a. flattened, irregular, and more or less oval shaped lump of candy mounted on the end of awooden stick which serves as a handle. By reason of this peculiarity of structure, considerable difficulty has been, experienced in' feeding the lollypops tothe wrapping machine so that they will be properly engaged by the fingers on the carrier or conveyor which advances them through the wrapper fold- One feature of the present ing devices. invention is the rovision of means for repops from the feeding holding them in the path of travel of the carrier until they are properly en aged by the carrier fingers. The means in receiving the lollypops from the feeding means and sitioning them' in the path of travel of t e carrier fingers comprisesgripping means which open to re ceive the stem of the lollypop, close upon the stem to hold it in position to be enproperly in engagement therewith. By providing this gripping means for centering the lollypops in thepath of travel ofthe carrier fingers, the lollypops can be fed through the machine and wrapped much faster and better than it has heretoforebeen possible to accomplish these operations.
Upon the completionof folding the wrapper about the candy portion of the lollypop, the free ends of the wrapper extend in the direction of the stick. These ends of. the wrapper are then twisted about the stick at the base of the candy so as to hold the wrapper in place. Another feature of the invention is the provision of improved means for twisting the ends of the wrapper about the stick. The twisting mechanism comprises a plurality of pairs of clamping jaws which hold the lollypops by the candy portion and to whicha rotative movement is imparted. Cooperating with each pair of clamping jaws is a'pair of twisting fingers adapted to close upon the ends of the wrapper,- andbetween which I the twist ismade by the rotating clamping jaws. The clamping jaws are adapted to .re ceive the lollypops from the carrier fingers. For this purpose the clamping jaws are mounted on a rotatable frame which revolves on a. horizontal plane, and t-lle'car pletely wra ped'lollypop from the-machine.

' wrappers through the wrapper folding devices by which the wrappers are folded on the candy part of the lollypops, and means for twisting the ends of the wrappers about the stick part of the lollypops so as-to secure the wrappers in place. The present invention is concerned more particularly with the means for feeding the lollypops to the machine and positioning them in the path of travel of the carrier fingers by which they are conveyed through the wrapper folding devices, and with the means for twistin the wrappers about the stick at the base of the candy part of the lollypop.
The unwrapped lollypops 20 are fed one at a time to the machine by an endless conveyor composed of the chains 21 and 22 provided with the lugs 23. The lugs on the chain 21 engage the candy part or head of the lollypops, and the lugs on the chain 22 engage the handle part or sticks of the lollypops. For this reason the lugs on the two chains are arranged in staggered relation. The rear ends of the chains pass over the sprocket wheels 24 which are supported from the upright 25. The forward end of the conveyor chains -pass over the driving sprockets 27 mounted on the shaft 28' .journaled in theframe of the machine. On the outer end of the shaft 28 is mounted a sprocket wheel 30 which is driven from a second s rocket wheel 31 mounted on the cam sha t 32 journaled at one end in the frame of the machine'andat the other end.

The outer end of the shaft 32 carries a bevel gear 34which meshes with and is driven by a bevel gear 35 fixed at one end of a shaft 36 upon which is mounted a sprocket wheel 37 which supports the rear end ofthe carrier chain 38 by which the lollypops are conveyed or ad vanced through the wrapper folding devices.
The lollypops are received from the lugs 23 of the conveyor chains by the carrier fingers 40-.which are mounted at uniform distances apart on the carrler chains 38.
The construction of the carrier fingers is shown indetail Fig. 6. The top end of the fingers is recessed to receive the free end of the lollypop sticks. In order that the lollypops may be held firmly by the carrier fingers 40, a spring 41 isprovided, the free end of which projects loosely into the recess. WVhen the lollypops are fed to the machine, they are first received by the gripping-means or centering fingers 42 and 43 (Figs. 4 and 5) and are held in the path of travel of the carrier fingers 40. The lollypops are discharged by the conveyor lugs onto the platform 44, and at the momentof discharge the centering fingers 42 and 43 occupy the positions indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The centering fingers are then closed upon thestick of the lollypop and it is held firmly until engaged by the I oncoming carripr finger 40. When the latter has advanced sufiiciently'to close the stick engaging recess therein over the lolly- .pop stick, the centering fingers are moved outwardly to permit the carrier finger to Secured to the pin 45, in fixed relation with the finger 42, is an arm 49 pivotally connected with the upper end of a link 51, the lower end of which'is connected with a head '52 adapted to slide on a vertically arranged rod'53 secured at its upper end to the guide 54 upon which the upper part of the carrier chain 38 rests. The centering fingers 42 and 43 are opened by a'cam 58 mounted on the cam .shaft 32 and are 1y)ieldingly closed-upon the lollypop sticks y a spring. The carrier fingers 40 are arranged at .uniform intervals on the carrier chain38' and serve to transport the lollypops and their wrappers through the wapper folding devices, which are generally indicated at 77 (Fig; 1) and transfer the wrapped lollypops to the twisting 'mechanism which is generally indicated at 78 the .centering fingers and continues its travel to carry the lollypop and a wrapper into the wrapper folding devices, it first enters a former (as it is known) which, when the head or candy part of the lollypop has entered therein, is adapted to move with the lollypop for ashort distance to make the first crease in the wrapper'in advance of the lollypop. The former 80 (Figs. 7 and 8) is a box like structure mounted to slide on the guide 81 secured to a crosspiece 82 which extends transversely of the uprights 88 upon which the wrapper feed rolls are mounted. The former is open at 84 on its bottom side to permit the carrier fingers to pass therethrough. The front end of the former is provided with the vconverging springs 85 which serve to center the headof the lollypop and also to make the first fold in the wrapper. The former is held stationary until the head' ofthe' lollypop has entered therein and then-the former is moved with the lollypop until the beginningof the first fold is made in the wrapper 79, as shown in Fig. 14. The
former is actuated from a cam 87 mounted on the mainshaft72. The connections between the cam 87 and the former comprise an arm 88 bifurcated at its forward end to loosely embrace the shaft 72. The arm 88 carries the cam roll 89 which is adapted to ride on the periphery-of the'ca'm 87. The rear en'dofthe arm .88 is pivotally connected with an arm} 90 of a bell-crank pivoted at 91. The other arm 92 of the bell-crank is connected with one end of a link 93, the other. end of which is connected with the former 80.

The gear 110 meshes with and drives the gear 111 which is mounted on one end ofthe shaft 112 upon .Which the feed rolls 100 are mounted. When the feed rolls have been actuated to advance the Wrapper into the path of travel of the lollypop and the former, the requisite length is severed by the shears. The fixed blade of the shears is indicated at 114 and the movable blade at 115. The movable blade is mounted on the upper end of a vertically arranged rod 116. Thelower end of the-rod 116 projects below the machine frame and is provided with an arm 117 pivotally connected with one end of an arm 118, the forward end of which is bifurcated and loosely straddles the shaft 72. The arm 118 carries the'cam roll 119 and is adapted to ride on the cam 120 mountedon theshaft 72. k
The wrapper folding devices, comprise a lower plate 122 supported from the machine frame and an upper plate 123 removably supported on thelower plate. The lower sides 128'- of the channel pieces 127 convergefrom the point of entrance .to the point 129 and the sides 130 of the channel pieces 126 form a straight channel. The function of thechannels formed by the pieces 126 and 127 is to turn the side e ges of the wrapper downwardly so that the may be foldedv up against the bottom of the head of thelollypop by the lower plate 122. Figs. 16 and 17 lllustrate the action of the sides 128 of the channel pieces 127 on the side edges 131 of the wrapper. j
The lower plate 122'is provided throughout its length with a longitudinal slot 133 which. is adapted to accommodate the crease 134 formed in the wrapper as the lollypop enters between the plates. ..The forwardend of the lower plate is provided. with the channel pieces 135 which make the creases 136 in the wrapper at the lateral edges at the head of'the lollypop, as shown in Fig.-

The further advance of the lollypop through the machine brings the side 140 in contact with the edge '141 1 of the lower plate, and the side 140 is then folded down over the side 138. fingers 40 pass through the slot 133, and in order to prevent the downturned side extensions .of the wrapper from entering the slot 133 at the' points 144 and 145, springpressed blocks 146 and 147 are provided. \Vhen the carrier fingers come in contact with the pieces 146 and 117, the latter move back out of the way, and when thecarrier fingers have passed beyond them, they return into position again to close the gaps made in the edges 139 and 14-1 by the slot 133.
When the lollypops emerge from between the wrapper folding plates, they are projected by the carrier fingers into the wrapper twisting mechanism. The wrapper folding devices serve to fold the wrapper about the sides and the front and side edges of the head of the lollypop, leaving the rear ends of the wrapper extending along the' stick. The wrapper twisting mechanism serves to twist the rear ends of the wrapper about the stick at; the base of the head of the 40 lollypop. The wrapper twisting mechanism 78 is located at the end of the wrapper folding devices and comp-rises two pairs of oppositely arranged clamping devices .150 and 151' which are adapted to receive and hold the lollypops by the wrapped candy portion 'VVlien a during the twisting operation. carrier finger emerges from between the wrapper folding plates with a lollypop, it pushes the lollypop into position to be received by the clamping device then opposite the wrapper folding plates. Immediately the clamping device has closed upon the candy portion of the lollypop it is swung on a horizontal plane. and this movement 5 serves to detach tlie lollypop stick from the carrier finger. .In this connection,-it will be noted that the stick holding recess in the upper end of each carrier finger isopen wat the sidesso as to permit the ready dis- 0 engagement of the stick from the holding P spring 41.
The clamping devices-of the twisting mechanism are of a duplicate construction and therefore it willonly be necessaryto 5 describe in detail the construction and mode frame 158.

'The clamping device 151 comprises a pair of shovelshaped clamping jaws 153 supported on the outer ends of a pair of arms 154 adjustably secured in the knuckles 155 pivotally mounted on a head. 157 journaled in the rotatable The inwardly projecting arms 156 ofthe knuckles 155 are articulated by a pin and slot connection 159 so that the clamping jaws may be moved in unison, but in opposite directions. The clamp-ing jaws are moved toward each other to close upon the lollypop by means of a spring 166 interposed between the ,arms 156 and a s1: ring housin 161 secured to the head 157. \Vhen the twisting operation is completed, the clamping jaws 153 are moved apart to release the lollypop and for this purpose a pin 162 is providedslidingly'k mounted in the hub 163 of the head 157. The pin 162 is pushed against the knuckles 155 to open the clamping jaws 153 by means of the wedge-shaped end 165 of a vertically arranged rod 1.66 slidingly mounted in the upper part of the frame 158 and guided at its upper end in the bracket 167 (Fig. 3) secured to.the frame of the machine. The rod 166 is pushed downwardly to open the clamping jaws 153 by means of a bell crank 168 mounted on the bracket 167. The arm 169 of the bell-crank 168 engages a collar170 secured to the upper end of the rod 166 and the other arm 171 of the bellcrank is pivotally connected by a link 172 with the upper end of the lever 173 pivoted at 17 1. The lower end of the lever 173 is connected with an arm 175, the free end of which is slotted to straddle the shaft 176 and carries a cam roll 177 which rides on the periphery of a cam 178 fixed on the shaft 176'. The shaft 176 is journaled in the machine frame and at one end carries a bevel gear 179 which meshes with and is driven by a second bevel gear 180 mounted on the transverse shaft 68.'
The twisting operation is performed while the clamping device holding the lollypop traverses a semi-circle. During this movement the ends of the wrapper are held against the stick of the lollypop by a pair of twisting fingers 182 and 183 which are opened to permit the positioning of the lollypop between the clamping jaws and which close again immediately thereafter. The two pairs of twisting fingers 182 and 183 are supported on the outer ends of the rods 184 and 185 journaled in the outer ends of the bracket 186secured tothe top of the frame 158. The lower ends of the twisting fingers are hook-shaped, as shown in Fig 3,
and are oppositely disposed so as to enclose the ends of the wrapper between them and thereby effect the twisting of the wrapper about the stick. The rods 184 and 185are rotated in opposite directions to open the V x 1 twisting fingers and a reverse movement is imparted: to the rods to close the twisting fingers upon the endsof the wrapper. For this purpose the rods are provided with intermeshing gears 187 and .188 '(Fig. re-
spectively. The-gear 187 meshes with and is rotated by a vertically arranged rack 189 depending from a collar. 190 slidingly mounted on the rod 166. The collar 190 and the rack 189 are vertically reciprocated to rotate the rods 184' and 185 to thereby open and close the twisting fingers by means a of. 1a bell-crank 1,92 pivoted in the bracket 167. One arm 193 of the bell-crank 192 engages-the collar 190 and the other arm 194 of the bell-crank is connected by a link 195 with the upper end of a lever 196 mounted on the pivot 174. The lower'end of the lever 196 is connected with an arm 197, the
outer end of which carries a roll 198 in engagement-with the periphery of a cam 199 mounted on the shaft 176. The construction and arrangementof these parts are the same as the construction and arrangement of the correspondingparts in engagement.

. In order that the ends of the wrapper may he twisted about the stick by the twisting fingers 182 and 183. the clamping jaws 153 are" rotated. For this purpose the errd of the hub 163 of the head 157 is provided with a .hevel gear 202which meshes with and is driven by a bevel gear 203 mounted on the upper end of a shaft 204 vertically arranged in the hub 223 of the frame 158'. The'lower end of the shaft 204 projects downwardly through the table part of the machine and carries a pinion 205 which is driven by a gear 206 mounted on a shaft 207 journaled in the machine frame. ' of the shaft 207 is secured a bevel gear 208 which is driven by abevelgear 209 mounted on the inner end of a-shaft210 journaled in the machine frame. The outer end of the shaft 210 carries the =slotted-dis'c'211 ofa Geneva gear construction. The roll 212' adapted to enter the slots 213 in the disc 211 and thereby impart an intermittent move= ment to the parts connectedwith the disc iscarried by a gear 214 mounted on a stud 215 fixed in a bracket 216. The gear 214 is driven from a gear 218 fixed on the front 'gear 219 mounted on the stud fixed in ,thepoint where it is discharged from the machine.-
The frame 158 which supports the parts" of the'twisting mechanism is 1'0- tatedto transport the lollypops from the point where the clamping jawsrecelve the lollypops from the wrapper folding devices to the point of discharge from the machine.
The. frame 158 rests on and is secured to a gear .222. The gear 222-meshes with and is driven by the gear 224 fixed on the upper end of the shaft207. The gears which rotate the frame 158 and the clamping jaws .are so proportioned that, while the frame 158 travels a semicircle'in passing from the point where the lollypops are received i from the wrapper folding devices to the point where they are discharged from the machine, the clamping jaws make three revolutions, which are sufiicient tocause the twisting fingegs to securely twist the ends of the wrapper about the stick of the lollypop, as shown in Fig. 19.
As one pair of clamping jaws approaches the point to receive the lollypop from the wrapper folding devices, and the other pair of clamping jaws approaches the point of discharge, the rod 166 is moved downwardly to open the clamping jaws, and at the same time the twisting fingers'begin "to open. Both pairs of clamping jaws and twisting fingers are fully openedi when the frame 166 momentarily comes to rest with the jaws and fingers 'in,.-alinement with the carrier fingers 40. During this pause the lollypop, o
which has just passed through thewrapper folding devices, is inserted between the alined clamping jaws by the carrier fingers holding the lollypop, and immediately thereaftdr the clamping aws close upon the lollypop, the twisting fingers close upon the ends of the wrapper and the frame 158 is swung laterally to disengage thelollypop from thecarrier finger. It will be incidentally observed that after the clamping jaws have discharged the lollypop from the machine, they close again while passing from the point of discharge from the machine to the 7 point where the next lollypop is-reoeived from the wrapper folding devices. - The mode of operation of the improved wrapping machine has been described in connection with the description of the construction of the various parts of the machlne. Briefly, the feed conveyor 19 serves tobring the lollypops within the range of the centering fingers 42 and 43 which hold the lollypops: in the path of travel of the. carrier fingers. 40.so that the lat-ter will :grasp the endof the lollypop properly sticks. The lollypop then enters the former 80 which moves with thelollypop until the beginning of the first fold is made in the wrapper, after which the-former returns to its normal position and thei'lollypop contlnues its travel through the wrapper folding devices by which the top andbottom sides of the wrapper are first folded down against the lollypop and then the side edges are folded under, one upon the other. The lollypops emerge from the wrapper folding devices with the rear ends of the wrapper extending along the sticks. The lollypops are then received by the clamping jaws of of the lollypop. I v
It will be understood that the invention is not to ,be limited to the construction herein specifically illustrated, but that it may be embodied in other forms withoutdepar-ting from the spirit and scope of the following claims. Moreover, it is not limited to wrapping lollypops but may be used for wrapping other articles, and especially those of irregular shape;
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is 1. A machine for wrapping lollypops having in combination wrapper folding devices, means for conveying the lollypops through the wrapper folding devices, means for feeding the lollypops one at a time to the machine, gripping means, and means for actuating the gripping means to cause it to receive the lollypops from the feeding means and hold them in the path of travel of the conveying means and release them when they havebeen engaged by conveying means.
2. A machine for wrapping lollypops having in combination wrapper folding devices, means for' conveying the lollypops through thewrapper folding devices, sald conveying means comprising fingers having recesses for engaging the ends of the lollypop sticks, means for feeding the lollypops one at a time to the machine, gripping means," and means for actuating the gripping means to cause it to receive the lolly pops from the feeding means and hold them so that the ends of the lollypop sticks are received in the recesses of .the fingers and then release the lollypops.
3. A machine for Wrapping lollypops having in combination wrapper folding devices, means for conveying the lollypops through the wrapper folding devices, means for feeding the lollypops oneat a time to the machine, centering fingers, for receiving the lollypops from the .feeding' means, and
holding them until they are engaged by the conveying means, and means for actuating the fingers to close upon the lollypop sticks and to releasethem when they have been engaged by the conveying means.
4. A machine for wrapping lollypops having in combination wrapper folding .devices, means for conveying the lollypops through the wrapper folding devices comprising a series of carrier fingers ,having recesses for engaging the ends of the lollypop sticks, means for feeding the lollypops one at a time to the machine, pivotally mounted centering fingers forreceiving the lollypops from the receiving means and holding them until they are engaged by the' carrier fingers, and means for actuating the centering fingers.
5. A machine for wrapping lollypops having in combination wrapper folding'devices, means for conveying the lollypops through the wrapper folding devices, said conveying means'comprising a series of car-' rier fingers adapted to engage the ends of the lollypop sticks, means for feeding the lollypops one at a time to the machine, pivotally mounted 'centerin fingers adapted to receive the lolly ops rom the 'receiving means and ,hold t em in the path of travel of the carrier fingers, and camv actuated means for opening and closing the centering fingers. 7 A

A machine for wrapping lollypops having in combination wrapper folding devices, means for conveying the lollypops through wrapper folding devices, means for supply ing the lollypops to the machine, means for feeding the lollypops into the path of travel of the conveying means, and a twisting mechanism comprising'a pair 'of clamping jaws to receive the wrapped head of a lolly- ,Dop from the conveying means, a pair of,
fingers for engaging the loose ends of-the wrappei', and means for rotating the clamp- 7 mg jaws to thereby effect "the twisting of ends of the wrapper,

13; A machine for wrapping lollypops having in combination, means for folding a wrapper about the lollypop so that the ends of the wrapper will extend about the stlck of the lollypop, means for clamping the wrapped head of the lollypop, means for grasping the loose endsof the wrapper and holding them against the stick, and means for rotating the clamping means so that the loose ends of the wrapperwill be twisted about the stick at the base of the head.
14. A machine for wrapping lollypops having in combination, conveymg means comprising a finger having means for ho1ding the lollypop by the end of the stick,
means for folding a wrapper about the head of the lollypop,
conveyingmeans having provision for grasping -the lollypop by the stick and advancing it through the folding means,
clamping means'for receiving the lollypop by the head from the ponveying 'means; means for rotating the clamping means, and means cooperating with theclamping means for twisting loose ends of the wrapperv about the stick.

A wrapping machine having in combination a twistmg'mechanism comprising a pair of oppositely disposed clamping means, each clamping means consisting of a pair of clamping jaws, means for actuating the jaws to hold the twisting operation and'to release the article thereafter, a pair of fingers associated with each pair of clamping jaws to engage the means for rotating the clampmgjaws to thereby effect the'twisting ofv the wrapper by 'means. of the clamping fingers, means for feeding an article and wrapper into position to be received by the clamping twisting mechanism to bring one pair of clamping jaws into position to receive" the next article and wrapper while the other pair of clamping jaws is discharging the wrapped article.
