UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
STILLMAN E. MATHEWS, 0F OHASKA, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVING-REINS.
Specification forming. part of Letters Patent No. 153,006, dated July 14, 1874; application filed May 16, 1874.'
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STrLLMAy E. MATHEWS, of Chaska, in the county ot' Carver and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Driving-Rein, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists ofthe reins, or a cord, chain, or strap connected to them, arranged through the bit-ring, around the bit and under the under jaw, from one side to the other, so that the strain tends to gripe the jaw very firmly between the bit and thevpart passing under the jaw, by which a powerful effect is produced on the horse, greatly interfering with his runnin bv causinDm him to throw u i his C! l. D
head in a manner unfavorable to running; and, in combination with the above arrangement, I propose to connect the reins to the bit-rin g by other` safety-straps, to come into action in case the aforesaid strap, cord, or chain breaks.
Figure l is a perspective View of a bridle and driving-reins arranged according to my invention, and Fig. '2 is a detail inside elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the driving-reins, B the bitrings, C the bit, and I) the cord, chain, or strap connecting the driving-reins together and passing through the bit-ring, around the bit and under the under jaw, from side to side,
so as to run over the bit and through the rings, forward and backward, according as the strain increases or diminishes, and thus gripe or bind the jaw very tight when it is desired to produce a powerful check upon the animal. Instead of a separate strap, cord, or chain atttached to the rein-rings E, as here shown, the reins may pass through the rings and around the bit and connect together, or be constructed in one piece, but for some purposes it may be preferable to use a separate piece. F represents the safety straps or cords which I propose to employ, in combination with the aforesaid contrivance, for holding the reins in case the strap or cord D breaks. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire `to secure by Letters Patentl. The colnbinationot' a strap, cord, or chain, D, with the driving-reins and the bit, when arranged to pass through the bit-rings, around the bit, and under the jaw in the manner herein described.
2. The safety cords or straps F, in 'combination with the driving-reins, when connected to a cord or chain, D, arranged in the manner described.
