Application filed March 28, 1923. EsBI'lZtINO. 628,305
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN VILLIAM FEARN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 81 Weaman Street, Birmingham, England, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ejector Mechanism 'for Small Arms of the Drop-Down-Barrel Type, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention consists in a new or improved ejector-mechanism for small arms of the drop-down barrel type, which is principally applicable to single-barrel guns, and comprisesan ejector-retaining sear which 1s during the closing of the arm, lifted into engagement with the ejector slide by an abutment located on the body body joint-pin, whereas of the said arm, the sea is retracted from the slide by a loose sector that is disposed in front of the barrel lump so as to ride upon 1 the joint-pin, and obtains its sear retracting motion from another body-abutment located above the joint-pin centre.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a single gun fitted with the improved ejector and showing the parts they assume when the gun is closed.
Figure 2 is a similar view, but shows the gun opened and the ejector parts in the positions operated to eject a spent cartridge from the chamber of the barrel. I
Figure 3 shows the main parts of the ejector mechanism separately; also an elevation of the barrel lump wherein the said parts are housed. I
The same reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the said figures.
In the improved ejector mechanism as illustrated, the ejector-leg 12 is located in a hole 12 bored longitudinally from the rear of the barrel-lump 1e and is influenced by an ejector spring 16 disposed between the blind end of the said hole and a collar on the leg; one side of the said leg being formed with a clearance 17 of suitable length (determined by the working throw of the ejector) to afford an engagement for a transverse stop-pin 18, whilst at a suitable distance from the inner end of the said leg, a shoulder 19 is machined to constitute the bent or engagement for the sear 10: the rear underside of the said shoulder being preferbelow the centre of the during the openingv thereof in the positions they assume after the same have ably bevelled as shown for the purpose hereinafter explained. Y
The sear, which is located in, a'hole' 10 ism-n drilled diagonally upwards from the forward end of the lump l l'into the ejector leg housing 12, consists of avslidablepin whose upper end is. suitably shaped'for en-- gaging the back of the ejector-bent 19 whilst near its other end,"the said pin is formed with a shoulder 10? to constitute an engagement for thesear-retracting piece 13,;
and with a clearance for the stop-pin 10.
The retractor piece 13 consists ofa loose sector that is housed in a curved recess 13 in the front of the barrel-lump and is adapted to ride around the rear side of the body joint pin 15 on'the gun being opened or closed; its upper end 13 an abutment15l located on the action body above and forward ofthe centre of the joint shoulder10 of the sear-pin.
, The retractor is of such dimension that when the gun is closed, the upper end 13 cause the body-abutmentf 15 to impinge against the projecting end of the .retractor and seating 13 this movement being transmitted'to the sear-pin 10 for disengaging the latter from the bent shoulder 19 and.
allowing theejector-slide to be projected by its'spring. On the other hand, during the closing of the gun, the ejector slide is pushed forward by its head moving down the breech-face of the body, and as soon as the slide has been thus displaced as to take the bent-shoulder beyond the sear-pin housing, the forward end of the sear-pin comes into contact with an abutment 15 located on the body below the j oint-pin centre. The continuance of the relative movement of the barrel and body in the OlOSillgdiIGCtlOIl then effects an upward displacement of the searpin within its housing, which simultaneously re-engages the said sear pin with the bent shoulder of the extractor leg and also displaces the retractor 13: counter-clockwise in its seating, causing its upper end to again being opposedto displace the latter clockwise within its' .75 f pin 15*,whilst its lower-end 13 bears on the i j is "closed, which results 1 the .body moves through an combination "of a v slide mounted within said lump,
retaining sear mounte'd'withinthe said bar rel lump, an abutment located on the body In order to delay the disengagement of the sear pinfrom the ejector slide until the breech has been opened suflicientlyto-give the necessary-ejection clearance, thexbent shoulder may be formed, (asshown inthe drawing) so thatthe said sear-pin has to be proportioned anddisposed sothat a certain clearance exists between them when the gun that, onzopening,
appreciable distance relativelyjto the barrel before contact ismadelbetween'the said abutment and the retractor, andthe disengagement of ,the j j mg sear-out of engagement witlrthe' e ector sear pin is correspondingly delayed.
Having described-my invention what I" claim and desire toisecure by Letters Patent 1s:

In an ejector mechanism 3 for small arms of 'the' drop-down gbarrel type," the of the arm'beloW the center ofthe bodyjoint pin and during the closing of the arm, a loosefre tractor piece fdisposed inthe front Iofthe-j qbarrel lump-so as to freely ride around the joint pin, andaan abutment located on the' body of the arm above the center of the joint tion of a barrel lump; .-an;ejector. slide mounted ithin said Jump; an 'ejector-rebarrel lump, an ejector f an ejectoradapted to engage the inner end of the ejector retaining sear for liftingthe samemto engagement with the ejector slide I taini'ng sear mounted'within the-said barrel lump and having a'shoulderat its lower inner-end; an abutment located on the body of-the arm below the center of the body body ioint 'pin, the lower-end of said loose retractor piece "beingadapted to engage the shoulder on: the said :ej-ectonretaining sear and an "abutment-located onthe body of the arrn fabovethe center of the body joint pin andengaging. the uppenend of the loose retractor piece for moving the ejectoreretain- I slide during the-opening of the arm.
