PERCY J. WILLIAMS, F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HOSE CLAMP.
Application filed March 2, 1921. Serial No. 448,988.
To all who/nt it ,may concern.:
Be it known that I, PERCY J. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have `invented new and useful Improvements in Hose Clamps, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates to improveio ments in clamps for securing couplings, noz- Zles and the like to rubber and other flexible hose.
The primaryA object of the invention is to provide a hose clamp which will be superior in point of simplicity of construction, incxpensiveness of manufacture and ease and reliability of adjustment, the clamp consist-V ing of but few parts and being capable of effecting a more even and reliable clamping 2o action than the ordinary hose clamp.
The invention possesses other advantages and features some of which, with the foregoing will be set forth at length in the following description where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the present specification. In said drawings I have shown one form of the construction of my invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form since the invention as expressed in the claims may be embodied in a plurality of forms.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the clamp as it would appear in use.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the clamp showing .it applied to a hose.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a detail of the clamp showing a portion of the circular jaw.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of one of the holders.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form of holder.
The clamp of this invention comprises an annular or circular expansible and contractible jaw 1, preferably' formed of a single strand of resilient wire. The wire of the jaw is bent into ring or circular form with the end portions 2 thereof doubled upon the main. loop or ring 3 and extended nearly around the same, so that the jaw will consist of one complete coil and one nearly complete coil. I may provide a plurality of complete coils and one nearly complete coil if desired. f
The free ends of the wire or jaw are attached to adjustable angular jaw holders 4 and 5, by being inserted through openings 6 in saidpholders and bent' back as at so as to avoid being pulledout of said holders, and provide a secure connection.
The holders 4 and 5 are adjustable to wards and away from one another von a screw or bolt 8 which is inserted through apertures 9 insaid holders. A screw head 1() is provided on one end of the screw and a nut 11 is turned on the other end so as to engage the holder 4. `The holder 4 is provided with flanges 12 which engage opposite faces of the nut and prevent turning thereof. The head 10 engages between similar flanges 18 on the holder 5 but is permitted to turn freely.
Portions 14 of the holders 4 and 5 are curved so as to conform to the curvature of the hose and portions. 15 of said holders extend outwardly from the portions 14 and have the apertures 9 therein. The bolt or screw 8 extends at right angles to the portions 15. The inner faces of the portions 14 are grooved as at 16 to receive the jaw 1 whereby cutting of the hose is prevented.
In use, the jaw 1 is fitted around the hose at the desired point and the portions 14 of the holders will engage the hose as shown in Figure 1. By turning the screw 8 with a suitable instrument, not shown, so as to move the holders 4 and toward each other, the ends of the jaw will be pulled together and the jaw will contract and bind or clam p lirmgly and evenly on the hose. The nut 1l will hold the bolt or screw against unintentional turning and the holders will thus be securely held in adjusted position. The holders are also clamped firmly upon the hose and assist in effecting a firm and reliable gripping or clamping of the hose.
The jaw 1 may be 'readily loosened and al lowed to expand by turning thescrew S so as to allow the holders 4 and 5 to move away from one another, the spring action of the jaw causing thismovement of the holders upon such turning of the screw.
The clamip may be readily and easily asscinbled or disassembled'by reason of its simplicity of construction and novel arrangement of its parts. By provision of Athe grooves 1G and the Curved portions 14 in the holders the Wire oit' the jaw l will lie in such n'ianner as not to present an uneven surface to they extent that cutting or injuring of the hose `vvill result 'fronra tight clamping thereot.
ne shown in Figure 5 there may he provided a holding lip 17 struc-lr out from the metal of cach holder 1S. r,This lip is to be bent to overlie the free ends 19 ot the jaw 2O so as to securely hold the ends in place.
1. )i hose clamp coinprisingl` a ivire loop having overlapping cndsw holders having openings therein thru which the ends o'f-'thc loop are inserted, one otsaid ends being bent doivn and hach nponthe holder, and a lclip carried on'one of the holders and bent over and upon to hold the bent back portion of wire against pulling out oit the opening.
A hose elainp comprising aloop having overlapping ends, holders to which said ends are connected, means carried on one of said holders for adjustably clamping upon the holder one end or' said loop and means associated Wit-h the holders for inoving them towards and away :t'roin one another to contract and expand the loop.
8. A hose clainp comprising a loop having overlapping ends holders to which said ends are connected, one of said holders having an opening therein thru which one of said ends is extended, ineans on the last named holder for engaging and holding said end ot said loop down upon thc holder and means for moving the holders towards and away from one another to contract and expand theloop.
'4. A hose clamp embodying in its construction-a jaw consisting of a single strip of material Convolved to provide one coniplete loop and apart ot another loop, holders to which the ends of said nilaterial are connected and having faces adapted to engage directly upon a hose, said 'faces having grooves therein extending through and engaged in which grooves are portionsoit the complete loop, portions of the strip ot material near the ends being extended into said grooves andA means tor mov-ing ysaid holders so as to contract and expand the Jaw.
