G. HAMILTON HANDLE CONSTRUCTION ATTO EY- I 660?:76 fiwihn I 7 BY v Filed Oct. 31, 1924 Patented Mar. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES GEORGE K. HAMILTON, O'F LADLET01\T,,NEW YORK.
HANDLE oons'rnucrron.
Application filed October 31, 1924. Serial No. 746,933.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE K. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Ladleton, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle Constructions, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to handle constructions for use in connection with tools of various kinds and classes, such for example as shovels, spades, scoops, forks and the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a circular or ring-like hand memher which will fit comfortably in the palm of the hand and which will facilitate the easy manipulation of the tool as compared with other handles or Ds now in common.
use; a further object being to provide improved means for mounting the handle in connection with the shank of the tool and for reinforcing that part of the shank in connection with which the handle is mounted; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a handle of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved handle construction and indicating one method of its use.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view showing the handle mounted in connection with the shank of a tool with parts of the construction broken away and in section.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the coupling ancdl reinforcing member which I employ; an

portions extending from said hand portions,
and the cornersformed by this construction render the handles or Ds objectionable in use, in that the said corners andthe straight hand portions put an undue strainor stress on the hand of the operator and cause the formation of callouses.
In carrying my invention" into efiect, I provide a substantially circular or ring-like D or handle member 5- preferably composed of suitable wood which is fashioned into the desired form by bringing flared end portions 6 into juxtaposition and forming a radial projection as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The end portions 6 are preferably semi-circular in form whereby when they are joined together, the projection 7 formed thereby is substantially circular in form in .cross section and is adapted to fit within a coupling member-8. I Y
The coupling member 8 is fashioned from a tube of suitable material, one end portion of which is split to form separate parts 9 and 10 which are flared laterally and form a recessinto'which the handle member 5 is placed, and the parts 9 and 10 are semi-circular in form in'cross section to correspond with and fit snugly on the handle member 5, and the free ends of said parts are preferably rounded as indicated at 11 to. form'a T e parts 9 and 10 are provided withapertures 15 adjacent the free end portions thereof and with other oppositely disposed apertures 16 adjacent the central portion 14: or at the neck portion of the member 8, while the parts 13 are provided withtwo oppositely disposed apertures 17 and 18.
In mounting the handle member 5 in connection with the shank 19 of a suitable tool,
for example a spade 20 as indicated in dot and dash lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the radially projecting member 7 formed by the flared end portions 6 is inserted into the coupling member 8, and a hole 21 is drilled through the member 7 or the portions 6 forming the same, said hole being in line with the apertures'16, and other holes 22 are drilled through the handle member and register with the apertures 15,
lil
ling member being split to form separate parts between which the shank of a tool is adapted to be placed, and means for securing the shank Within the last named end portion of said coupling member.
5. A handle member for tools of the class described comprising a strip of Wood fashioned to form a substantially circular body, a tubular coupling member adapted to be mounted on the shank of the tool, the end portions of said strip being brought together and projecting radially from said body and adapted to be inserted into said couplin member and secured therein.
6. A andle member for tools of the class described comprising a strip of Wood fashioned to form a substantially circular body, a tubular coupling member adapted to be mounted on the shank of the tool, the end portions of said strip being brought together and projecting radially from said body and adapted to be inserted into said coupling member and secured therein, and that portion of said coupling member mounted on the shank of the tool being split.
7. A handle member for tools of the classdescribed comprising a strip of Wood fashioned to form a substantially circular body, a tubular coupling member adapted to be mounted on the shank of the tool, the end portions of said strip being brought together and projecting radially from said body and adapted to be inserted into said coupling member and secured therein and that portion of said coupling member mounted on the shank of the tool being split and the other end portion of said coupling member being flared and partially encircling said body.
8. A handle member for tools of the class described comprising a circular body having a radially projecting portion composed of separate abutting parts, and a coupling member secured to said projecting portion by means of Which said handle member may i be secured to the shank of a tool.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 22nd. day of October 1924.
GEORGE KQHAMILTON.
